I did feel Yukari and Miki were a little underscored, and Yu-na over-scored. I would've given Yukari around 60, Miki in the low 60's, and Yu-na in the high 60's. It's like Mirai in the last National's, she was best but not best ever best, and not *so* much better than the others in the SP that she was virtually guaranteed a win.
Yukari skated delightfully with wonderful choreography and the best spins. Miki had great jumps and fast spins, with a hint of delicacy in her expression that I hadn't really seen before. It's such a shame that they have such a distance to cover to reach Yu-na, and so little cushion ahead of the Americans.
I guess I actually agree with all the placements, just not the exact scores. Mirai had no expression until she finished all the jumps and a spin, when she got into the footwork section. She looked a bit mechanical concentrating so hard on her jumps. Rachael also seemed a little nervous, erring on the opening jump combo that she probably would be very strong on at home. I also thought that her choreography was slightly bland compared to the latter skaters. Don't get me wrong, I think these young skaters are extremely talented, and they have most of the technical goods. But it's not surprising that they're a little lacking in competitive nerves or presentation maturity.
As for Kimmie, oh, that was really heart-breaking to see the fall on the 3F. She really looks *so* much happier now, which is great to see. And her jumps did look stronger, especially the 3Z (though better in warm-up than program) and the 2A (though she fell on it in the practice, ironically). Her spins are faster, more powerful, and her arms look so much softer and more expressive. Except for a brief moment during her COE spiral, I almost forgot about her airplane arms.
But I feel like she's almost concentrating a little *too* hard on being happy and showing that happiness (which definitely did come across). I worry a little that maybe she's thinking that most of her problems would go away if only she got her confidence back, because she has real technical issues too, like the 3F.
