2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

I am not sure but I guess, looking at their competition experience, that they haven't been sent out a lot in the challenger events. It's harder to build your reputation when you are competing in events like Worlds, 4CC or even GPs where much more experienced skaters are also competing. Skate Canada should send them to smaller events for them to place better and earn higher scores just like many of the European teams do.
I just watched their free program for the first time that was awesome! Love the choreography and connection - a huge step up for them! One thing I poster commented on was that apparently their speed is noticeably lacking compared to the top teams. I always got the impression they were moving fairly quickly because they definitely do give the impression that they are attacking the elements, but perhaps just a little more work on their basics and speed generation is what they need. I have to say, I think that is my favorite program of any pairs team this year. There are areas that could definitely develop throughout the year and have a bit more complexity, but there are also some really innovative choreographic highlights. Of all the teams I have seen this year, they are the team that has included the most new to them choreographic elements.

I have seen them live a few times. They are average in terms of speed. Not in the fastest group, nor in the slowest group.

The level calling at SkAm was pretty harsh overall. Nothing to suggest it was specifically about them. Not to mention, they've had difficulties with levels before.
Of course not. And I am tongue in cheek when I talk about protecting other teams. But, I am still not getting the twizzles level 2 for them as there were no apparent mistakes at least to my non-skater eyes but still rather experienced at watching ice dance :)

if someone can tell me what they did wrong to score so low on their best element, I am all ears.

Has Wesley Chiu competed in any domestic events this season? Do we have any idea what he is like post-injury?

He competed at Autumn Leaves and sectionals in BC. Autumn Leaves he had a total score of 192. At sectionals, he was at 231 with a solid free skate that scored 158.42. If anyone's going to challenge Roman or Stephen for the Olympic spot, I'd go with him.

I like the sound of 231 at sectionals. Canada doesn't tend to give hugely inflated domestic scores in the way that some countries do.

We get the next installment of Roman v Gogo this week. It kind of feels like pulling names out of a hat to guess which one will come out on top.

Is this the last chance for Maddie to prove she is still our top lady for the Olympics? I mean if she can come through this weekend with 2 good programs and still loose the CAN title would she be the better choice for the Olympics? I would hope that Skate Canada doesn't just go with the winner at Nationals. But if Maddie skates here like she has been lately I can see Skate Canada not choosing her. In the past Skate Canada has made some wrong choices by just going with the top skaters from Nationals. Jennifer over Josee, Susan H over Karen, Ben over Jeff, Larkyn over Alaine, etc.

Skate Canada goes with results over last two years as well as Nationals.

Maddie's 190 at worlds last year is the best achievement any of our women has done recently... So it's really up to her to show that she's still that Maddie and not the one we have seen this year so far.

I am with you about Skate Canada making wrong choices. Jennifer over Josée is still not sitting well with me and it's be 30 years LOL

With there being only one spot and whoever gets it needing to do the team event, they'll need someone who can do a strong short to qualify for the free.

Maddie has the highest international score in the short of the eligible skaters and the lowest international score this season. I hope she can show that she's regrouped at Finlandia 🕯️

Maddie has the best combo (well apart from Gabby whose 3t-3t is money) but that's the issue too... She can mess it up in so many ways as we have seen
2z-3t, 3lz no combo, 3lz-2t... she needs to get her confidence back as her 3lz-3t is awesome

For those following Finlandia to see if LaLa will win their tiebreaker...

Restatt is there again this week.. the tech controller of SKAM... so that could mean very low scores again this week... depending on what the other two are up to. (one brit, one Italian if I saw properly)

By my math they'd need to come in under 187.30... if Z/K are that low, L/L probably make it on placement first

I think a lot of us get overly hung up on the most recent result, for better and worse.

Another trainwreck would certainly not help her chances, but who knows what SC is thinking, and they certainly leave themselves enough wiggle room in their "criteria" to do whatever they want at the end of the day. At this point no one else has really grabbed the mantle for themselves, so Nationals quite likely will be the primary driver in their decision.

But who knows. In anycase, I wouldn't lose sleep over tomorrows result. We'll know a day from now, and I'm sure will be over-reacting to the good or to the bad all over again then :laugh3:
