No I definitely agree, she is beautiful and has a great athletic yet thin physique for skating. She seems a little uncomfortable with herself now but that should pass shortly. I know Yuna made the switch to doing mature programs when she was around 16.
I know at SC she said that she was trying to appear older on the ice, maybe having a stone cold face isn't the best way but it's nice to see that she's trying!

Interesting. Let's say, just for the sake of discussion, that somebody close to Mirai hired a thug to injure another skater. Who's knee does he wack? Sasha's? Alissa? Caroline's? Ashley's? Rachael's?

Evan is right. And the author is right that Mirai is different now, she's very elegant and neither of her programs this year are "cutsie" like they have been in the past. I personally love her pirates SP but think she'd do better with a different LP.

Mirai has been going through puberty over the past year or two, and hormones like that will make anyone emotional. I don't think the crying before Nationals last year was her problem, as she still managed to skate a pretty good program (underrotations aside). Her problems were a growth spurt, an injured ankle and not enough long program run-throughs in practice as a result of the ankle. So, although she may have fewer underrotation calls so far this season, I would not automatically give Frank Carroll credit for that.
However, I WOULD attribute her total lack of interpretation this season to the coaching change. She has the same choreographer (Lori Nichol), but now she has a coach who will let her water down the choreography. Charlene Wong and Bob Paul did not allow her to do that, and that choreography/characterization is what made her truly stand out in the 2007-2009 seasons. Now her skating is defined by which jumps she rotates or doesn't rotate, just like everybody else. To me, that is a great loss.

Hmm, that's one way of looking at it. I would argue her 3lz-3toe combo was what made her stand out in her earlier seasons, and her energy. I read in many articles how she said she always had so much energy when she was 14, and then once she was 15 she was "lazy" and tired a lot.

Mirai is becoming a young lady and will not be skating like a 14 year old anymore. Let's hope after her growth spurt she will get her jumps back - and develope into a mature looking skater with a successful senior skating career.
Kimmie became a much more artistic skater - which took her several seasons - but she never got her jumps back.
Now we see Mao having problems with her jumps. The last report I read said Mao was stripping down her choreo ...........
Skating is so competitive today - and having good choreo is not enough. Skaters also need good jumping technique.
I don't think Carroll had any choice with Mirai but to try and re-establish her jumps. Mirai won't win a thing with so many urs.
It might take longer than half a season and two GP events for Mirai to adjust so I think we need to have a little patience.
I am always surprised by how open Mirai can be in interviews.
I think she was pointing out problems she is dealing with and most of the other skaters don't tell us these things.

THAT'S what I like about her. No pwetty pwincess nonsense, just real stuff.
She has a lot of potential too.
ITA. It's nice that she can admit that she has been "lazy" and is having a tough time growing up rather than just being snarky about it like some other people...

I just realized Mirai is from Arcadia, CA, which makes it more lovely that she is not a pretty princess or brat. Arcadia is a very nice, very expensive town with kind of an "uppity" reputation, it's nice to see she's keeping it real :agree:

That is cute, I'm assuming it's from a while ago though because it sounds like she was a freshman there and looks a lot younger too. Seems like she goes to a very well-run school, I have no doubt she is smart too. It seems like all these skaters are such overachievers
Yes, but they kind of have to be if one thinks about it. You don't get to that level by accident...
