Excerpt below - which includes season's best scores -- is from ISU's event preview (04 December 2012). http://www2.isu.org/vsite/vnavsite/...3,4844-205151-222374-nav-list,00.html?id=1211

Ashley Wagner (USA) and Mao Asada (JPN) lead the Ladies with two wins on the Grand Prix series each. Wagner scored a seasons best of 190.63 points while Asada earned a seasons best of 185.27 points. The challenge should come from World bronze medalist and defending Grand Prix Final silver medalist Akiko Suzuki (JPN/185.22 points) who won two silver medals en route to Russia and from Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (RUS), who cm advanced with a second and a fourth place and a seasons best of 179.62 points to the Final. Kiira Korpi (FIN), is the first Finnish skater to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final with a gold and a bronze from her events (seasons best 177.19). Christina Gao (USA) replaces Julia Lipnitskaia (RUS), who withdrew due to injury, in the Final. Gao was first substitute with a second and a fourth-place finish (seasons best 174.25 points) and competes in her first Grand Prix Final.

:)I 'd rather come here and focus on what's going to happen in two weeks.
I don't think with Mao's current level, she will win in GPF, more likely she will be off the podium. When all top skaters are in the same event, bonus points won't be that much.
I feel Akiku is currently the strongest lady in all aspects. Hope judges will do her justice and she gets the gold.
Ashley second based on her consistency but no 3-3.
Liza third.

when was the last time the USA had the #1 spot in the GPF for the ladies?

yes, ashley, akiko and kira-my podium. Or Liza for bronze just not the robot stretchy kid, Jilia. I want blood for poor, underscored Akiko!

The Russian skaters will be very difficult to beat at home, especially in the SP. I expect them to be scored well if the jumps are there. The others will play catch up in the free skate, and these two will try to hold on to their placements. PCS will go up for European skaters slightly, down for Mao and Akiko slightly and stay about the same for Ashley.

The skater who lands enough jumps and gets level 4's to score 190+ will win it.

The 2003-2004 GPF with Sasha Cohen. That's the last time a lady from the US won two GP gold.
And it was the first season when the IJS was used in international competitions... It looks really like a long time ago (Michelle was still competing!)!

But Alissa Czisny won the GPF two seasons ago.

The question I answered was When was the last time a U.S. lady qualified in the No. 1 spot. It also was the last time that a U.S. lady won both her GP events to qualify, that's what I meant. Alissa was 1st and 3rd to qualify. She was close to the No. 1 spot. She was No. 2.

2012 GPF qualifiers:
Ashley Wagner (USA) and Mao Asada (JPN) top the Ladies’ standings. They are the only ones to qualify with two victories.

Yes, Ashley was really the best at Events.
Superior stability and very good presentation are her advantages. Not so excellent jumping content and skating skills - disadvantages.
Because of these disadvantages, she may be not first in Final.
Akiko, with her good jums (I remember how she jumped at NHK - really "effortless throughout", good exits, I was really happy to see it) and realy nice skating, Kiira (good jumps, nice skating), Liza (who restores now) - they all may pretend to gold. Ashley too, of course.

But Mao's place in standings is result of unadequate judging. Her corrupted jumps, if adequate judging, would leave her out of Final.

Yes she is. She fell during practice on Wednesday. She has split her chin and got a slight concussion, so doctors recommended her to withdraw. Such a pity! I am totally upset(

It's good to read when a skater follows doctor's advise. Hope she recovers easily and quickly so not too much of the season is lost.

All that's left for Julia this season is Russian Nationals and Junior Worlds. Since Julia is too young for Europeans and Worlds this year, the GPF was to be her Worlds for the season. I imagine being forced to withdraw from this competition is a huge disappointment for her :(
