2013 Worlds Ladies FS

Yu Na seems to do better under her korean coaches than Orser.
Bye bye, magic Orser.

Yu Na has matured as a person in her two years away from competition, and she never completely stopped training. Before returning to Korea, she also trained for a time at East-West Ice Palace with Peter Oppegard and Karen Kwan.

It seems to me that it took Yu Na some time to think things through before making a definite commitment to come back. But once the decision was made, she put determination and grit behind the effort. Yu Na is a cut above all the rest, but she's also less worn out physically, aside from Caro who also did not compete on the GP circuit this season, except for Euros and a prep event.

Movements not fully extended, toes not pointed, pretty much the same facial expression throughout, not a lot of eye contact with the judges (if at all). In the SP this was all offset by the fact that there was busy upper body movement throughout (that she seemed to deliver a bit better as well). But in the FS, it was rather sparse. Element layout was pretty standard as well. I didn't find anything interesting or exciting about the program itself. She definitely deserves more interesting choreography.

I think the music is at least partially at fault here. There were just way too many sound bites of really famous/popular Les Mis songs and it made the program feel like it was hyperventilating somewhat- jumping phrases when you expect to hear a particular musical line, or just cutting entirely to another song somewhat unexpectedly. I have this issue with a lot of musical cuts in skating, but it's just that much harder when you pick a popular musical and shove in that many songs!

But yes, more interesting choreography would help... as would a better choice of music.

She still deserved the gold here, by quite a margin, and I am impressed by how exciting Yuna managed to make the program... but I do agree with you.

I agree with you in terms of the choreography, element layout. It was not the most interesting program by a long shot. But still I was moved, and whilst I've admired her in the past I have never been moved by her. One of those times when the performance totally outshone everything else. Who can understand these things?

Yes, it was not her 2010 Olympics program, but I agree WeakAnkles, I actually was quite moved. And I don't know, she didn't have any dramatic facial expressions but somehow I felt her soul oozing out of her......and I think the audience in London felt it. I'm not sure how to explain it....

I dont know what on earth you are speaking of unless you meant 8. Tons of women have landed 7 triples in history. Technically Mao landed only 4 or 5 clean triples that would be ratified as successful though, so even that wouldnt be history of any sort. I do give her credit for going for such a gutsy jump layout and standing them all up though. I still think she might be better focusing on quality over quantity, but then again she cant ever beat a clean Kim or clean Kostner purely by quality and PCS so has to go for more difficulty. In that sense she has a quandry on her hands.

My bad. Yes, technically speaking, she landed 7 triples. They weren't pristine. But she landed 7 of all types: axel, (f)lutz, flip, loop, salchow, toe loop.

Her flutz seemed closer than ever to achieving an outer edge. :)

In terms of quality, she did get equal GOEs to Yuna in everything except flip and lutz, so she was close.

I heard some commentators speculating that Mao might put two triple-axels in her free. I don't know. On one hand, I do believe she can bring up her triple-axel another notch, but it's so risky...

I can't believe how Adelina and Liza messed it up(((( It all started with Osmond's huge SP score and lowballing evrb else to let Osmond get on the podium with a clean LP when they started to freak out that they won't get the three spots and eventually they were too nervous to perform well. That preOly fever in the Russian team did no good. I don't blame the judging, they could have scated like in Euro but it just feels so wrong not seeing Liza, Adele and Yulia in Sochi... And it's so hard to say who's going... I think Yulia is a lock if her jumps are ok next year, and I'm afraid Adele is a lock with a relatively clean skate in Nats. TAT will push her to the podium which is going to be (Lip, Rad and Sot) and we won't see Liza in Sochi...

To repeat my question from earlier... Kim received 73.61 for PCS in the FS. That is the highest ever for a lady, right?

Поедут Лиза и Аделина) Judging was good..

I don't think we can anticipate. The Russian ladies are still at ages where a lot can happen in a year, and that's a good thing. These youngsters have so much pressure on them to rebuild Russian skating--in some ways, it's worse on them than it is for the Americans, because Russia has the Olympics next season. I cut them a lot of slack, and I continue to have hopes for them, especially Liza T. and Julia L.

Hurrah's comments are ignorant, to say the least. Actually Zujun Li landed 7 clean triples today if f(l)utz was counted. 3f+3t, 2a+3t, 3s, 3l, 3lutz, 3f, 2a.

(S)he meant all kinds of triples, including the axel. But I think she forgot Midori Ito. Take it easy.

I don't think we can be sure that Liza would not be at Sochi 2014. I doubt Julia is ever going to receive higher score than Liza's-Julia's SS and spins are better than Liza's but for everything else, Liza is better than Julia.

I hate Yuna Kim, she's so ******* perfect!!! My faith in Mao for the gold in Socchi is now close to 0.

I know. It's awful if you're a Mao fan. But as I wrote earlier, Mao matched Yuna's GOEs today in everything except the flip and lutz. And Mao does have a triple-axel and loop, which Yuna doesn't. The possibility is not zero.

Gracie Gold.

You know, it wasn't a perfect program, but I think that after a perfect performance at Nationals, I'm glad she was able to get it together and peak enough for a respectable debut at worlds.

Also I do think she had been working on the artistic mark, I can see improvement as far as trying to skate to the music rather than over it. Just compare it to her performance at Jr. Worlds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV3CUevgUyE

She still work to do, but I think she's making progress..

Also she is a really good spinner. Not Alissa Czisny or Mirai Nagasu good, but she's real fast and has nice positions...

(And I'm just glad that I don't have to deal with any more Gracie crucifixion on the boards...)

P.S. It's also totally amusing that both she AND Max crashed on the boards with their Axels.....man these two are made for each other!
