Dorota Siudek (née: Zagórska) (Polish pronunciation: [dɔˈrɔta (zaˈɡurska) ˈɕudɛk]) and Mariusz Siudek are former Polish pair skaters.

Dorota was born on 9 September 1975 in Cracow, Poland. Mariusz was born on 29 April 1972 in Oswiecim, Poland.

Dorota and Mariusz are the most acclaimed Polish figure skaters. They are the 1999 World bronze medalists, two-time European silver medalists (1999, 2000) and two-time European bronze medalists (2004, 2007). They also won nine national titles and multiple medals in the GP events (11 bronze and 2 silver medals) and other ISU events currently falling within the Challenger Series. They were the first Polish pair to medal at the World Championships. They also participated in three Olympic Games (1998, 2002 and 2006), their best result being the 7th position in Salt Lake City 2002.

Until 2003 they trained in Oswiecim under Iwona Chruscinska-Mydlarz. Then they moved to Montreal to train with Richard Gauthier.

They teamed up in 1994 and retired in 2007. Initially, they planned to retire after the 2005/06 season. However, they decided to compete one more season because the 2007 European Championships were assigned to Warsaw, Poland. It is when Zagórska began using her married surname, Siudek (Dorota and Mariusz married in 2000).

Upon retirement they started coaching in Torun, Poland. Among their students they can list Stacey Kemp & David King.

Mariusz Siudek is an ISU Technical Specialist in pairs for Poland.

I've just opened a thread for the most acclaimed figure skaters from my home country. Since I have updated or created threads for many wonderful skaters from all over the world, I thought why not creating a post-retirement tribute thread for the best skaters Poland's ever had? So here it is. It's still under construction as it needs videos to the programs, but I hope to finish it over the next few days. Enjoy :)

Awwww, thanks for opening this thread and a trip down memory lane for me :thank: I remember them very well from my childhood, they had some awesome twists and lifts. They were known for winning bronze medals at GPs and never qualifying for the final, poor dears.

Their lifts were the best!

And while remembering great Polish skaters, do not forget Grzegorz Filipowski either. :)

How could I? :) He was our first big figure skating star: he won bronze medal at the 1989 Worlds, and two European medals: bronze in 1985 and silver in 1989. However, I didn't want to mention him in the Siudeks' thread. It's possible that in the future I will also open a thread for him, but since I try to be away from Men threads, this may take some time :)

As regards Dorota and Mariusz, yes, their lifts were something special back then when they skated. I remembered that even once ISU invited them for a seminar for the judges about the lifts. That was a big privilege for them because it proved they were highly appreciated in the figure skating community.

Dorota and Mariusz now dedicate to coaching. They have a son and he also trains skating (last year Mariusz and the boy appeared in one of the breakfast TV programs and talked about how it is to train under your own parents). Who knows, maybe in the future we'll see him on the rinks?

It took me longer than I expected, but I finally finished Dorota and Mariusz' OP. I've added all the videos I could find and detailed results. Enjoy :)

Some time since you posted this, but I want to thank you anyway for all this. An enjoyable trip along memory lane! You can easily see who were the inspiration for many current skaters in the lifts!

I think their son is competing in the Advanced Novice Men's competition in the ISU section of the Tayside Trophy in Dundee, Scotland this weekend.

Ryszard SUIDEK (typing error?)

The Advanced Novice Men's SP is due to start at 12:21:00 GMT (13:21:00 CET). So 20 minutes from now.

Ryszard is the third and last skater to start.

Due to the stream getting a copyright claim slapped on it, I didn't see Ryszard's Short Programme. But I did see a photo of him and Mariusz sitting waiting for the results. And there is no doubt that Ryszard is Dorota and Mariusz's son. He has his Mum's blonde hair, and facially he is the absolute picture of his Dad.

It is so good to see the children of skaters following in their parents' footsteps. 🥰

Tayside Trophy Advanced Novice Men's SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Ryszard finished 3rd out of 3 in the SP, with a score of 27.14.

Although he is sitting in last place, it should be pointed out that there is only 3.84 points covering the entire field. So, he could still win this!

:cheer: WELL DONE RYSZARD!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice Men's FS is due to start at 11:45:00 GMT (12:45:00 CET). So 4 hours from now.

Ryszard will be the first skater to start.

He is due to start at 11:51:00 GMT (12:51:00 CET). So 4h 6m from now.

I miss them so much. It s almost 20 years since they retired. Does anyone have their 2003 and 2004 Europeans LP? I can not find it anywhere. Polish fans always have to wait 30 years on average to see their figure skaters on the podium. They had the best lifts in the bussines but stopped improving after 2000. What a shame they did not move to Canada two or three years earlier. It was too little, too late. Mariusz is the greatest figure skating gentelman. He has always treated Dorota with respect and they were so in love. There are not that many off ice couples who are still together. So many of them broke up or got divorced. They are still together. Their son lacks artistc impression but I wish him all the best. Mariusz Siudek is a sense of a proud parent.

It always moves me how Mariusz shows his love for his son in kiss'n'cry. Great family. They were our national figure skating pride in their times and still are working very hard to develop polish skaters even if they could have had better opportunities as coaches abroad (for example in Canada).

I think Mariusz and Dorota never got the recognision and fame they deserved. Sometimes I am shocked how many people have no clue who they were. They have always been modest, private people mainly focused on their job. Even if they were asked about their off ice relationship their answers were always subtle, they knew they did not have to show "everything" to the media. I have always liked watching Mariusz kissing Dorota's hand after each program even if it did not go well and was full of mistakes. Mariusz never blamed Dorota for anything. He was always comforting her, he was the one to talk to the media if something went wrong just to let Dorota have a rest. He was always so calm. I remember him saying "In Pairs skating there is no me and you, it is us and we made a mistake together". There was an affection and respect in every gesture. I remember when Ryszard was born and I remember he was seven weeks early. And look at him today. I hope he will get more ballet classes or something. He needs to improve his artistic side. But you can see how respectful he is to his father. Figure skating famiies are not always like that. Mariusz would be full of love for his child no matter how poor Ryszard's skating was. I miss late 90's and early 2000's in figure skating. Or maybe I miss my teenage years.

Filipowski is better known in Poland than Dorota and Mariusz despite the fact that he won less medals. I don't know why but that's the way it is. Maybe it is because he was that "behing the Iron Courtain" guy and it was easier for him to be famous in late 80's and early 90's. Figure skating was more often broadcasted back then in Poland.

I can imagine being Figure skating coach in a country like Poland must be frustrating. There are no ice rinks, no money and children are not that interested in being an athlete anymore. But this is what Dorota and Mariusz have always wanted. And in Canada they would be 1 out of 1000 coaches. Sport does not give this kind of opportunities it used to give back in the 80's or 90's when Poland itself was much poorer country. I guess Dorota and Mariusz would be happy to train some pairs but again...it is almost impossble to create one. Mariusz was still lucky enough to go to Vancouver Olympic Games with Kemp and King. Today he has no opportuniny to go to the Olympics as a coach so it is good he did it back in 2010. I read he and Dorota go to Obersdorf this month to take a part in IceDome camp. Ryszard also improves his jumps everytime he goes there.

I always cheer for Ryszard, because I was always a fan of his parents! Their lifts were the very best!

Perhaps there should be a thread for Polish Skating in Skate of the Nations this season?

Dorota and Mariusz never got enough credit for their lifts under 6.0 scoring system. Dorota has been struggling with her side by side double axel for years. They had poor lines and they needed to move to Canada to improve their choreography. Thy did that ... just too late. I love their 2004 SP. I still can not watch their 2002 Olympic SP without wanting to turn the screen off. That was terrible and did not suit them at all. No matter how clean their skate was, they always had to wait for other pair's mistake to have a chance to get on the podium. If others did clean as well, Dorota and Marusz had no chance againts Russians or Abitbol and Bernadid. Throw triple salchow instead of loop did not help either. And it was impossible for them to improve their technical merit in their 30's.
I wish Ryszard all the best but I am just wondering...Maybe he will need to go abroad to start improving faster. He will always get his Polish Championships medal because it is not that difficult given how poor Polish figure skating backyard is but... Is that all he wants? I admire his bond with Mariusz but it must be difficult for the whole family to live like that and not to mix on and off ice life. Dorota and Mariusz have not been the biggest figure skating artists either. Ryszard has exactly the same problem with his skating. I know he is only 17 but time flies and figure skating career itself won't last forever.

I just finished cleaning up their OP. The links now work and the table is fixed. There are some new videos.

Does anyone recognize the music for the 1995 & 1996 free skates?

There is no 2003 SP Europeans program. This link right there is from Worlds, not from Europeans. It is almost impossible to find their 2003 and 2004 Europeans programs.

If you speak Polish or want to see their wedding photos, there you have an article from the best known Polish sport newspaper
