OK, so the last skater in Group 1 skated to "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears. Great song, and great for skating to. But, is it really appropriate for a competition where the skaters are girls that are under 12 years old?

The skater was even wearing a costume inspired by what Britney wore in the video. Admittedly, the blouse was more modest, not showing as much flesh as Britney's did. But, the skirt was far too short (even shorter than Britney's!)

Although the skating was good, I did feel uncomfortable watching this programme.

"Appropriate" is word that many choreographers and stylists don't know when they work for a junior skater, sadly.

Chiara Hristova's wee sister, Vayana, just skated.

Loved it!!! The White Stripes' version of "Seven Nation Army" always produces a great programme.

She goes into 2nd position with 2 left to skate.

And, in case you are wondering, Chiara is here and will be skating in Junior Ladies tomorrow and Saturday.

Lots of cheers when the Ukrainian girl that finished off the segment entered the ice. And cheers for every element, even when she fell.

Now I'm wondering if we had the same with the other Ukrainian skater, who was second to go.

EDIT: Just wound back to check and, yes, she did! I didn't notice because her music was so loud that it was hard to make out the audience during the programme!

She slots into 10th position, 3 places behind her team-mate.

Although she is representing Cyprus, I hope that the audience are knowledgable enough to know that my kid Sofia Lapshyna is also Ukrainian (from the same city as the two girls we just watched, as it happens), and give her similar support in the next segment.

Right, time for Sofia.

The priority for Sofia right now is to finish ahead of the skater that kicked off this segment, as they are level on 13 points in the overall European Criterium Basic Novice II Ladies rankings. But, because the livescoring isn't working at the moment, I don't know where Yordanova is in this segment's standings.

OK, massive confusion.

When skater #6 finished, all the skaters from Group 2 came out onto the ice. The announcer came on over the tannoy and asked "Is Sofia Lapshyna here?" And then repeated it a couple more times. And then, getting frustrated that the other skaters were on the ice, she said to them "Sofia Lapshyna is next to skate. Is she here?"

I think by this stage we all knew that the "Sofia Lapshyna has withdrawn" announcement would be coming.

To be honest, I am not surprised, given what is happening in the country she was born in. I was expecting all the Ukrainian skaters to withdraw. And who would blame them? So it took me by surprise when both of the skaters representing the Ukraine in Basic Novice III skated. And it raised my hopes that I might see my girl after all. But, it was not to be.

I hope all is well with Sofia and her family in these difficult times, and I am sending them my best wishes.

What a strange fall from the sole Austrian skater in this competition. (Although, going by her name, I suspect her family may originally be from a Spanish-speaking country).

The music started, and she skated away in a straight line, and just fell down on her knees. She wasn't doing any elements or turning or anything. She was literally skating in a straight line.

She goes into 13th, with 3 to go. Although, the Romanian skater that was due to follow her has just been announced as having withdrawn, so it is now at most 2 to go.

From Basic Novice II, we move to Basic Novice I. There is a group of 3 boys due to skate after this, but I will do a separate post for them.

Right, going to have my dinner now, and watch the final group later on.

Hopefully I'll be back in time for the boys.

Well, that boy's competition marked the end of the Interclub competitions. It is time to move onto the ISU competitions, and we start with an Advanced Novice double-bill. First up, the girls.

Livestream for the Advanced Novice Ladies SP is now on air.

That's not a good start to the ISU section of the event.

Masa ILIC (SRB) was called, got into position, and started waiting for her music. And she waited. And she waited. And she waited. And she waited. And, eventually, somebody must have told her that it will take a while longer, because she came out of position and started warming up again.

After a few more minutes, she was called again. And the music did start this time.

Much to my surprise, the delay didn't affect her. She actually had a good skate.

Day 3 of the Bellu Memorial is starting, with both the Advanced Novice categories finishing their campaign. First up, the girls.

I'm going to be concentrating on the Challenge Cup today. But, I'll keep an eye on what is happening here too, so that I can continue to do the reminder posts.

Now that the Advanced Novice competitions are finished, it is time for the Juniors to start. And since we are alternating between girls and boys for all of today and tomorrow, that means that it is the turn of the girls.

Livestream for the Junior Ladies SP is now on air.
