We've kicked off the competition with this event. Ted Barton is commenting. :)

One thing I'm noticing is that the teams are junior age eligible. Everyone teamed up late? Well this means they can go to the JGP next season if they place well.

The ages are likely related to their demonstrated level at the end of last season in relation to the perceived depth of field at that point.

With so many ice dance retirements this season however, we may see more a push up into juniors and seniors next season.

But it would be unlikely for more than a few to be JPG ready. Skate Canada's minimums for Ice Dance have historically been fairly high. A good score as juniors at the Lake Placid International Ice Dance Event in mid summer can open up a JPG slot however.

TGee last year's podium finishers at novice were all sent to the JGP this season. The 2015 novice winners (Lajoie/Lagha) were sent to a JGP event in 2015-2016 and to the 2016 Youth Olympics where they won a team event bronze medal. Skate Canada does seem to consider results from Challenge and Nationals for international assignments.

Natalie D'Alessandro and Bruce Waddell are in first right now. Nice skating from them.

And now a team that's 17 & 18.

Can you even go from novice straight to senior? :scratch2:

Yes you can. They don't even have to do another test. The test that allows you to compete novice also allows you to compete junior and senior.

or Minto as well. That is also a big competition for the ice dancers..

Thanks for the info nadster. So some of these guys may be in senior next season because of age limits.

Olivia Han and Grayson Lochhead won novice in 2016, did Minto and Thornhill Summer Skate, and then went to JGP Yokohama.

Strachan and Zhu, one of the youngest teams, take the lead after PD1.

Agreed. Minto is the other big event mid summer. But they usually take place the same weekend at the end of July. So teams choose one of the two.

While Minto Summer Skate is international in the sense that both Skate Canada and USFSA accredit it, teams looking to get exposure to ISU judging to develop readiness for the JPG, will often to to Lake Placid.

Uhm, does anyone know how the start orders for the second pattern dance were determined?

Recall at Challenge that they went from last place forward, but this seems to have been predetermined.

On another note, it's fantastic to have Ted Barton anchoring commentary!:thank:

And even having interviews with another commentator from the mixed zone! What a great way to build audience and prepare competitors for the future.

The skate order of the 2nd CD is like this

( Middle of order in first dance - bottom of order in first dance ) followed by

1st ice dancers in the first dance - team before the middle skaters in first dance.

It looks to have been random. The FD will probably be lowest to highest score.

Natalie and Bruce are in the lead right now with one level 3 and three level 1 elements. Next up are Strachan/Zhu.

Well, Strachan/Zu were not so strong on the second pattern, but quite nice. Dropped to second behind Alessandro/Waddell.

I really like the expression from a younger team like they are. And they have quite good extension. Definitely, will be a team to watch going forward. Look forward to their FD.

I really liked Strachan/Zhu's skating! They're only 12 & 13 and they skate so well. I am not sure though if McCue/Clemente will be able to win with the FD they have. D'Alessandro/Waddell's FD is quite up beat and crowd pleasing (it's a Cirque du Soleil medley) so I'm looking forward to the FDs.

So as predicted Natalie and Bruce took the title with their great FD. Actually Team Cricket had the only two teams with a FD over 60 points, with Kasatkin/Circelli at 60.11, and D'Alessandaro/Waddell with 64.54 points. D/W won with 90.49 points, McCue/Clemente came in second with 84.28, and the Behiels came in third with 83.20.

Natalie and Bruce are now the 2016 pre-novice and 2017 novice ice dance champions of Canada.

Cricket Club, producing not just mens and ladies champions.
