2018 Olympic Season: Team Event

With nearly all countries announcing their selections, there's already a lot of debate regarding who will do which team event. Post your predictions and thoughts here!

Qualified teams are:

Canada
OAR (Russia)
United States of America
Japan
People's Republic of China
Italy
France
Germany
Israel
Republic of Korea

The rules say each country can switch skaters in up to two disciplines (Ladies, Men, Ice Dance, Pairs) between short and free. They are not required to switch any skaters.

Scoring is as follows:
In each event (short, free) the first place finisher earns 10 points. Second place earns 9 points, third 8 etc. Tenth (last) place earns one point. Points won by a team in the short program competition are carried over to the free program. Top five teams from the short advance to the free where each skater can get 6-10 points (6 for fifth place, 10 for first).

Can Canada afford to change out pairs?
Would it be too risky for Canada to change out ice dance?
Is USA safe to change one dance team? (How do you not send Shibutanis with their track record or national champions Hubbel/Donohue?)
Medvedeva for short and Zagitova for free? (Presuming they both get cleared and make it to Korea.)
Can Canada get gold? USA anything but bronze?
If a country has a fairly safe silver if they skate their A team, but also a safe bronze if they use their replacements, should they go for silver or let a maximum number of skaters get Olympic medals?

My prediction for Russian team:

At this moment i think that the best chances to win are at Canada, so Russia has at best chances to win the silver. They will still need to gain loads of points from their woman and pair as their men and ice dance are weaker than USA's team.

Women: SP: Medvedeva FS: Zagitova . They need the points from the women a lot to keep a second place for team. Also they might want to give both a chance to get an Olympic medal. I don't think they would use Sotskova, only when Medvedeva really is still not well enough. As both Medvedeva and Zagitova have good chances at in olympic medal, it would be difficult to choose one for both programs in team event.

Men: Kolyada or Samarin both programs (depending who will look better at EC - i don't think it would be Aliev chosen, as he was too unstable this season-, both have no realistic chances to medal in men)

Pair: each pair one of the program. Which pair, which program?.... T/M has a better short than free, but will K/S want to skate the free and be tired for pair competition? Both teams can fight for the bronze in pair competition, both deserves the chances to a team medal.

Dance: Bobrova /Soloviev - both programs. They will lose here points compared with the direct competition, they cannot afford to go with the second Russian team.

I think with W/P in the free dance they might lose some points. They could get beaten by an American ice dance team. I guess it might depend on the cushion they have after the short.

These are pretty close to my predictions. I might have Bradie skate short and Mirai long... but close enough.

If things are tight during the finals, I think Canada sticks with V/M for the Free Dance.

I think V/M are a solid 2nd (at worst if France makes final) but W/P might slide behind the Americans and the perhaps the Russians.

I strongly feel that D/R will not do both programs. I’m thinking S/B will skate the free for Canada over MT/M.

Yes, as a veteran team they need to think about how their bodies will be affected. I would completely back this decision if they make it.

I get your rationale, but I keep wondering - there are always surprises, and while most think Russia is the favorite, anything can happen. If Canada has a good shot at gold in the Team Event after the SP's, then they'll go "all in" on the long - that's my prediction. I won't be surprised if the only switchout for Canada is the lady, especially if there is a Russian misstep in the SP's.

Think about it: D/R, V/M, Chan, and both women could leave Korea with gold medals from the team. If that scenario is plausible, I bet they go for it, even at the risk of the D/R individual medal.

I think it's wiser for Japan to have Sakamoto skate the SP with the backloaded jumps and Miyahara the FS where she usually gets higher PCS than in the SP.

*This is what I would do, but TSL said they're hearing that it's Bradie for the SP, and Mirai for the FS, and they do often have some inside info, so in that case my best guess is (SP/FS): Bradie/Mirai, Nathan both, SK/K both, Shibs/HD

Ladies: Evgenia SP, Alina FS
Men: Mikhail Kolyada
Pairs: T/M SP, S/K FS
Dance: B/S

Japan
Ladies: Satoko SP, Kaori FS (but it could be the other way around)
Men: Yuzuru SP, Shoma FS (I think Hanyu would want the SP because he needs the TE as a warmup for the individual, just in case they miss the FS, but it could go the other way)

Does anyone think China has a shot at the final? If they do, they would use Sui/Han for short. Gosh, this is such a puzzle. I'm still thinking if Canada would switch out a pair depending on Chinese and German selection in the short and possibly free (should China make it).

Russia:

Men: Kolyada -both
Pairs: T/M - SP, S/K - FP - I really hope it won't be the other way around. Don't want to see Candyman two times at the Olympics, it would be too much

Canada:
Men: Chan - both
Ladies: Osmond SP, Daleman FS
Pairs: D/R -SP, S/B-FP
Dance: V/M - both
The best chance for Canada if for Chan to do both segments, but it might be too much for him. If they need to replace Patrick for one of the segments, D/R will have to skate both SP and FP, but I don't think they will do that, as it will leave them to tired for the individual events.

Men: Hanyu SP, Uno FS
Ladies: Miyahara SP, Sakamoto FS
Pairs: S/K
Dance: M/R

US:
Men: Chen - SP; Rippon - FP. The best would be for Chen to do both, but this will leave him to tired for the individual event I guess. As he is a medal contender, I assume they will replace him with Rippon for the FP.
Ladies: Bradie - both . She is the most consistent of the ladies. Also her chances for an individual medal are very low, so she is a better asset in the team event.
Pairs: SK/K both
Dance: Shibs- SD, H/D FD

If I was France I'd leave P/C out of the team event. France is a long shot at best for bronze while P/C are very likely for individual gold. I'd rest them and use the #2 team.

I think the Japanese team will depend a lot on Hanyu's ankle. If they feel it can hold up for 3 programs I would put him as the SP skater and Uno as the LP.

Eric might be too tired to do two events, but I don't think Meagan knows the meaning of the word tired.
