He's going to need upgrades, so why not debut them at 4CC in a relatively pressure free environment?
He doesn't need upgrades right now. Two quads and two triple Axels in the free skate is enough to make the top ten at Worlds, which is what his mission is for this particular season.

If his long-term plan is to bring more quads in, he can start on that in the fall and see how they work out in lower-stakes competitions.

I personally think it's probably better if he's got some pressure on him at 4CC, because there's going to be even more at Worlds, so he'd better start getting used to that. Russia certainly doesn't suffer because its skaters have to do well at Europeans to go to Worlds.

I'm not as certain as you that will be enough for a Top 10, although there are a LOT of variables in play this season, more than usual it seems.

You've got to imagine that the top 3 from GPF are heavy favorites for the Top 10. So let's award those to Nathan, Yuzu, and Kevin.

Shoma and Vincent (provided he makes the team) and Boyang are question marks, but for the sake of argument, let's put them in Top 10. Now we're up to 6.

Add a Russian... your choice... and we're at 7. Maybe 8 if another skates relatively well.

Then we have the third American, the third Japanese, Matteo, Brezina, Morisi... there are a lot of very viable candidates remaining for the Top 10.

I think Roman is going to need upgraded content. If everyone skates well, he's on the bubble at best. It will be a heavy lift for any of the candidates, but I still think Roman has the best shot.

The reality is that it's seldom if ever an "everyone skates well" situation, so the goal is to maximize Roman's chances of being one of the ones who do. Introducing new content this late in the game does not help him do that. Multiple people made it into the top ten last year with either only one quad or one triple Axel in the free skate.

I hate to admit this however, due to my obsession with Patrick there are some Canadian Men that I have never seen skate. Roman tops that list. I will look for him on YouTube....Congratulations.

Emily missed the new SP minimum by less than a point. She has the FS minimum. She is more than capable of getting that SP minimum at 4CC, and if she does, she will have earned that World berth.

But you're aware that Kevin was 3rd at GPF with 4T only? So if you put him in top 10, why Roman needs to have more quads than 4S?

I felt bad for Gabby. As Tracy commented, "she missed more competitions than she participated in, this year" She just didn't seem ready for the Nationals. I hope she can regroup, find herself and her joy in FS again.

Some time away from competition and taking time to heal body and mind could be quite helpful. That's what helped Gracie Gold out of the doldrums and back to herself.

I totally agree. It would be foolish to try to upgrade his content when he's just getting a handle on what he's already doing (which isn't chump change). Most of the men don't have 4-5 quads like Chen. With his skating skills and stunning spins, I think Roman has just as good a chance as anyone else, especially if he can continue to skate well for the international judges. His medals this fall put him on the map, and the national title never hurts, either.

Men's these days is usually a splat-fest, with a very few doing decent skates and coming out on top.

What has Gabby done for her poor showing at Nationals to be ignored? The way people are posting on here, that she should be sent to 4ccs/Worlds regardless of the fact that she skated very poorly at Nationals, I would think that she had an international career like Zagitova or Medvedeva. And that somehow in spite of the fact that she's skated poorly all season that magically she'll skate well enough on the biggest stage to keep Canada's 2 spots?

It’s not so much that I think she’ll magically skate well enough - I just don’t imagine any of the current crop of skaters to skate well enough (or have the international clout) to attain the spots. But there is also a lot of time between now and Worlds so who knows.

Yup she should get it over there but that’s a lot of pressure too.

Might have missed it but which ladies have met the minimums for Worlds?

I do like Roman - he has nice lines and finish. All the men in Canadato befairlack consistency. But I just note it would appear Nam and Messing with their performances would have good shots top ten. Double theiraverage result and add one while not guaranteed gives ou an idea. Nam just missed the GPF finals and messing was only two spots behind I believe. Yes, 3 Americans, 3 Japanese, 1 Russian, France and Italy or China - Canada has a reasonble shot at topten.

Whatever the situation is with Gabby and there seems to be much it will be tough. But sadly as much as you have to be happy for the medallists in Canada itis a very very very sad situation. Rare is that the medallists are kind ofunknown even in Canada - well those woh loveskatingwill knowthe but really they are very mediocre skaters who right now areforgettable. Not even at th elevel of Jennifer Robinson who dominated skating in Canada when Canada had nothing forladies really. This is so sad.

But they'll get international experience, which Canadian ladies desperately need; Gabby isn't ready for competition, is unlikely to get remarkably better between now and Worlds which means she's unlikely to place that well there. This would be the second consecutive year that she got sent to Worlds with her Nationals placement overlooked, and all the Fed would do is undermine their own Nationals competition - what's the point of having a competition if the Fed is going to ignore the competition results and send someone who didn't perform well to Worlds

At this point, I'm just blowing off steam because my view that Roman should have been named outright has not carried the day.

All that's left is to let it play out. My opinion still stands, but I'll shut up about it.

I wish him great success at 4CC.

Last time the medallists were relatively unknown, their names were Kaetlyn, Gabby, and Alaine, and that turned out pretty well. I'm generally happy with the podium - young skaters with a lot of talent and promise. Hopefully SkateCanada will give them the international assignments and national support they need and deserve.

"It's too much for me, honestly. I don't think this is good for my heart, I don't think this is good for my health in general, the stress." Lol, Roman is overwhelmed by his Nationals triumph in the cutest way possible! :luv17:

I now have the ability to download the fluffs and interviews on TSN.ca directly (although the original files are still only 540p), so no more of my "shaky" screen recordings for that site! I can't be 100% sure because I don't have TSN, but I don't think the following were aired on Canadian television.

Slipchuk interview about the Worlds selection process. It doesn't seem like they're considering naming Gabrielle (thankfully), says it will be decided based on 4CC results.

They say that Gogolev is recovering from a bone bruise on his ankle, but is expected to be ready for Junior Worlds at present.

Also in the process of discussing the one man being sent to Worlds, he delivers an, uh, less-than-glowing assessment of much of the previous decade's Canadian men's field.
“As much as everyone says we are only sending one man to Worlds, I’ve said if you really think about it, in the 10 years Patrick (Chan) was champion, most years we were sending one man to Worlds. But we’re confident with our men.”
