2014 Cup of China Ladies Free Skate 11/08

That's perfect. Note that the hypothetical Jason did not offer any explanation or excuse, nor would we require one.

I am utterly dumbfounded at the legs this story has. There was not this much outrage when 1968 Olympic gold medalist Wolfgang Schwartz was convicted of abducting teenaged girls for the East European sex slave industry.

Methinks the comparison of YL's story vs. ol' Wolfgang's is apples and oranges. Had he committed his crime in the era of the Internet (plus 24-hour cable news channels, in his case), I think his story would have stirred up lotsa outrage.

Not saying that endless discussion and wall-to-wall coverage are good things, but they are inevitable things.

ETA: Never mind. Thanks to Sam-S for enlightening me.

It happened in 2002. Not the gold medal obviously but the story about the kidnapping. He was 54 yrs old. We had the internets then ;)

Ohhhhh. Thanks for setting me straight, Sam-S.

And apologies to MM. Apples to apples, it is.

Social media wasn't that prevalent back then, if it had happened today, Tumblr, Twitter and all those communities would absolutely jump down his throat, I've seen lesser people get more hate for small things

either way, Yulia has apologized and got punished for it, don't need to latch onto this any longer

Good point.

Maybe I should have said tangerines to kumquats. ;)

Figure Skating Union imposes fine on Lipnitskaya

Lipnitskaya then decided not to show up at the awarding ceremony and Tuktamysheva was on the pedestal jointly with Japan’s Kanako Murakami, who won the bronze medal of the competition.

“Yes, she was fined,” Dore said. “The regulations state boldly that the participation in the awarding ceremony is obligatory. Moreover, the administration of the teams always warn about it before the start of each competition, including about the consequences for the failure to attend.”

According to rules of figure skating Grand Prix events, a skater is fined for the failure to attend the awarding ceremony by cutting part of his or her prize money. Lipnitskaya earned $13,000 in prize money for the second place, however, Dore refused to name the exact amount of fine imposed on the 16-year-old Russian figure skater.

Direct quotes from Lipnitskaya re the medal ceremony are on the Russian federation's website -- from a long interview with Tatjana Flade.

YL explains at great length what happened re the medal ceremony.

Also answers questions on topics completely unrelated to the medal ceremony.

An article in English from TASS about the ISU fine. Includes quotes from David Dore.

That sucks. While it appeared very unprofessional, I can't help but remember that she is from a single mother family. Hopefully she learns her lesson.

Is this separate thread in The Edge really necessary?

I had just posted the same TASS article in the CoC Ladies FS thread.

Also the link to the interview with Lipnitskaya -- incl. quotes from her re the medal ceremony. It was conducted by Flade, and the text is on the Russian fed's website.

Can someone translate the article where they explain what happened?

I was very sad after the FS. And was so tired that did not think of anything. I decided not to watch the sportsmen – I was not in the mood. The was a thought about the medal ceremony but it was already evening, then boys and pairs. For some reason I decided that the ceremony would be tomorrow. I went to the hotel. Took a bath, removed the makeup, and went to bed. Then around 11 the telephone rang from the committee: are you representative from Russia who won the second place. I answered: yes. They: there is a medal ceremony now. Where are you? I: in the hotel. Silence, then they hung up. What to do? The head was wet, no make-up. The dress is in the closet. It is about 15 minutes to the rink by taxi which one has to catch. I dressed up, rushed downstairs, we caught a taxi. Then another ring: too late. I am shocked. How could it be? Did not look at the time-table and forgot about the ceremony – decided it would be the next day. It was late. What could I say? Could happen to anyone. The consequences turned out to be quite grave. It is clear that we did not miss it on purpose, like everybody thought. And if people are waiting for my apologies, my apologies to everyone. One more time it was not planned. An accident. We are all people. Next morning they started to threaten: international scandal, no prize money, no stipend for 3 months. It is not final yet but it is very unpleasant.

I'll say the same thing about this I said when Surya Bonaly was so disrespectful on the podium. Short of being deathly ill, there is NO reason to not show up for a medal ceremony. I don't care if the skater was raised by wolves. Being the child of a single parent is very common all over the world and does not excuse bad behavior. Lipnitskaya is an elite figure skater and, as such, must carry herself in a professional manner.

Ouch. The fine is one thing but withholding the stipend (if it turns out to be more than a thread) is like being out of a job for 3 months with no pay. That seems a little OTT to me.

I understand completely why Yulia would have wanted to just hibernate for a while after the FS, but keep wondering what happened that her coach didn't keep her on track.

... And if people are waiting for my apologies, my apologies to everyone. ...

Thanks for your translation of the chunk of the Flade interview, samkrut .

Regarding this sentence -- "И если люди ждут от меня извинений, то я прошу прощения у всех" -- would the following alternate translation also be correct?

And if people are waiting for apologies from me, then I ask forgiveness of everyone.

The ISU fine is appropriate, IMO, but I give Lipnitskaya credit for providing details in her own words of what transpired.

And I am willing to forgive her.
