Evan Lysacek started skating when his mom enrolled him and his eldest sister, Laura in skating lessons together. He wanted to play hockey, but ended up competing in figure skating not long after that.

Other sibling skaters:
Nelli Zhiganshina, who was an ice dancer for Germany with Alexander Gazsi, and Ruslan Zhiganshin, an ice dancer from Russia who, of course, used to skate with Victoria Sinitsina and now skates with Elena Ilinykh.

Also no one yet has mentioned two sisters from Norway who are currently competing in singles: Camilla Gjersem and Anne-Line Gjersem.

Other sisters are Swedish singles skaters Viktoria Helgesson and Joshi Helgesson, who were coached for many years by their mother Christina Helgesson, who was also a figure skater. Victoria has retired, but Joshi is still skating and is now coached by Brian Orser.

By the way, CaroLiza, they're Gjersem sisters I mentioned above are twins. :)

Don't worry, I realise that the Gjersem sisters are twins. I would be a bad father if I didn't! :drama: (I run the Fan Fest for them! ;) )

I decided to only use the James twins because they fitted in with the question I was linking to. And to give other people the chance to say other sets of twins.

I'm not sure whether anybody will think of them, so I'll throw in another set of twins now:

Allison and Becky Bereswill (the former got to regional level; the latter was the 2008 Junior Grand Prix Final Ladies Champion).

Never knew Bruno had a sister who was also a skater, never mind a national champion!

You got me curious there, so I looked her up. Here is her podium record at Nationals:

1988 Canadian Championships – Junior Ice Dance:
2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Julie Marcotte (CPA Beloeil) / Juan Carlos Noria (Gloucester SC)

1989 Canadian Championships – Junior Ice Dance:
1[SUP]st[/SUP] Julie Marcotte (CPA Beloeil) / Juan Carlos Noria (Gloucester SC)

And since I was there, here is Bruno's podium record at Nationals as well:

1991 Canadian Championships – Novice Pairs:
2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Genevieve Courchesne / Bruno Marcotte (CPA Beloeil)

1993 Canadian Championships – Junior Pairs:
2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Isabelle Coulombe (CPA Chateauguay) / Bruno Marcotte (CPA Beloeil)

1994 Canadian Championships – Junior Pairs:
1[SUP]st[/SUP] Isabelle Coulombe (CPA Chateauguay) / Bruno Marcotte (CPA Beloeil)

you should check out Bruno's records as a senior... he never made the podium at Nationals but still managed a 4th at 4CC and a 12th at worlds....

he also was 3rd in world juniors with his first partner

Here is something I had mentioned in another thread ;) it's cute

Bruno's last partner, was Valérie Marcoux....
Marcoux teamed up with Craig Buntin after Marcotte. They had a few National championships titles, went to the Olympics and placed in the top ten at various WC.
Then, Buntin teamed up with guess who???? Meagan Duhamel nonetheless :) they were always on the podium at nationals and placed 6th and 8th at WC however, didn't qualify for Vancouver games...

Of course, now Meagan is skating with Eric Radford....

What's cute is that from Bruno's last pairs partnership... there were only a few degrees of separation to his marriage ;)

Marcotte- Marcoux
Buntin-Marcoux
Buntin-Duhamel
Radford-Duhamel & later, Marcotte-Duhamel

:)

Yeah, I noticed that.

When talking about girls, we frequently talk about being successful at Junior level not always translating into being successful at Senior level. And we blame it on developing a chest which raises the centre of gravity, making jumps and spins more difficult.

But Bruno is the perfect example that the move from Junior to Senior can also bring a change of fortune for boys.

And his results show that he is also one of these curious people that can do very well at the Majors, but doesn't do as well at GP's and Nationals (well, at Senior level anyway).

It would be fascinating to know why things turned out this way.

Wow! That is so cool!

I would never have realised those connections.

You know, it really shows how interwoven these things are. I bet you could pick any 2 seemingly unconnected skaters in North America and find something similar. But, probably not in as few steps.

However, they wouldn't have the nice touch that this one has. :)

Thank you

I think for pairs and dance, translating results to senior from junior varies on the partnership..... some have great partners from young years, others don't... look at Virtue and Moir, Papadakis Cizeron and the Shib sibs.... all great partners formed in youth... so I think that this could explain why some of the junior teams fall into oblivion when getting to senior..... partners split or retire... and new partnerships are difficult to form.

I don't know the exact reason(s) why Bruno's great youth results didn't translate into the seniors (apart from his win at Challengers), mind you in his years with Marcoux, Canada did have a great team on top of the world.... in Salé and Pelletier and of course, Kristy Sargeant and Chris Wirtz were still strong.... BTW, Kristy who is now married to Chris, has a sister, Lisa Sargeant who also is a National Champion, in ladies singles (1990)

I know Julie had some knee injuries and I think Bruno's career could have gone on a few more years considering he left the sport at about 27-28??? and only 2 years after teaming up with Marcoux... She went on for quite a few years after... So did they split and he decided to retire??? or did he feel his body was tired enough???

Evan Lysacek started skating when his mom enrolled him and his eldest sister, Laura in skating lessons together. He wanted to play hockey, but ended up competing in figure skating not long after that.

Also Javier Fernandez has an elder sister called Laura who competed in ladies singles and ice dance.

A true skating family is the Olympic champion Ilia Kulik and his wife Ekaterina Gordeeva, Olympic champion in pairs skating twice. Their daughter Elizaveta Kulik competed at 2017 US Nationals as junior singles skater. Also Daria Grinkova competed at some lower level (intermediate?), who is the daughter of Ekaterina Gordeeva from her first marriage with Sergei Grinkov, her partner in competitions.

Not sure if she has already been mentioned, but Gabriella Marvaldi skates US junior pairs. She is the daughter of Isabelle Brasseur & Rocky Marval.

Whoops sorry CaroLiza_fan, I worded that rather poorly! I knew you knew about the Gjersem twins and thought I remembered you being a big fan, I meant to say that more as a "did you forget about..." than "did you know..."

You always amaze me with not just your knowledge of lesser-known skaters but also your passion for championing them. Yep, I've learned a lot from your posts! I enjoy skaters at different levels not just the "top-tier" ones. Anne-Line, in particular, I find a very elegant skater.

Allison I didn't know about, but I remember Becky Bereswill. This whole topic has really been fun!

Now THAT'S an interesting connection! I remembered Marcoux / Buntin and later Duhamel / Buntin but never realized that Bruno skated with Valérie Marcoux before she skated with Craig Buntin. Small world indeed!

Some more sibling skaters:
Before teaming up with Zach Donohue, US ice dancer Madison Hubbell skated with her brother Keiffer Hubbell.

Siblings Danielle Hartsell and Steve Hartsell were US pairs skaters who were World Junior champs and National Senior champs.

Don't worry, I realised that you were just playing with me. And I was just playing a bit in my reply!

Awww. Thank you for the kind words. But, "my knowledge"?! Most of it is straight off Wikipedia!

Seriously, I do like championing the lesser known skaters. Because they are out there doing their thing, and not getting the same recognition and attention that the better known skaters get.

They deserve it too! :agree:

Allison I didn't know about, but I remember Becky Bereswill.

I have to own up and admit that I didn't know about Allison either until just over 2 years ago. It is ice coverage that deserves the credit for that one. I was talking about Alexe Gilles playing Elsa from Frozen on Disney On Ice one time, and she pointed out that the girl Alexe shares the role with (i.e. Becky) was also a twin.

Here's the post:

This whole topic has really been fun!

Definitely! Like, I knew about some of the relatives mentioned, but there are so many others who I had no idea that they had relatives that skated.

I like threads like this! :) Not those threads where everybody is fighting and arguing.

Emmi Peltonen's mother and grandmother has been figure skaters. Her little sister is a synchronized skater. (And all men, brothers, father and grandfather in the family are hockey players, so no male figure skaters).

The Heiss Family were all skaters, right? I know that Carol had a Sister ( Nancy ) and a Brother (Bruce) who were also skaters.

Not only that, but Carol Heiss married Hayes Alan Jenkins, 4-time World Champion and 1956 Olympic Gold medalist, whose brother David Jenkins won the Olympic Gold Medal in 1960, the same year as Carol's.

There was also the Owen Family who were tragically involved in the US Team Crash in 1961.

:( Maribel Vincent (Owens) won 9 U.S. championships in ladies (tied with Michelle Kwan) and 6 in pairs with two different partners. She was the first American to win an Olympic Medal in skating (bronze in 1932) and also won two world medals in the early 1930s. Later she coached Tenley Albright (OGM in 1956) and Frank Carroll.

In 1961 her daughter Marible Y. Owen was U,S. pairs champion and her other daughter Laurence Owen was U.S. ladies single champion (age 16) and was projected to be the next big thing. Tragically mother and both daughters died in the plane accident on the way to worlds.

If you are willing to go way back we might mention the family of Eduard Engelmann. Together with his son, Eduard Engelmann Jr., Engelmann built the first artificial ice arenas. Eduard Jr. won three European titles (he was also an expert cyclist) in the 1890s. Jr had three daughters, Edi, Helene, and Christine, who were all skaters. Christine Engelmann married Carl Shaefer, 7-time World Champion and Olympic Champion in 1932 and 1936.

Eduard Egelmann Jr. was also the uncle of Herma Szabo. Szabo's mother was Christa Szabo, world medalist in pairs. Herma went on to win 5 world championships in ladies' singles (tied with Carol Heiss and Michelle Kwan for second behind Sonja Henie) and two in pairs, along with the 1936 Olympic Gold Medal.

Oh I don't think anyone has mentioned Anastasia & Isabella Cannusico. Side note: Isabella is engaged to Anastasia's ice dance partner, Colin McManus.
