Figure skating costumes: Behind the glitter and sequins

During Pechalat/Bourzat's Les Mis free dance in Torino, I remember Nathalie's headband slipped so much that at one point that it was covering her eyes for a few seconds. Usually not a big deal, but it must have been pretty scary to be blind for even a second during your Olympic debut. I felt so bad for them, even though they brushed it off immediately afterwards.

i found this video about the 1989 Euro championships highlighting several problems with costumes

Another wardrobe malfunction (or defect): 2008 Worlds; Maxim Trankov and Maria Mukhortova, he apparently didn't try his costume on before their LP or it was washed and it shrank or something.. but they stopped mid-program and he had to have the sleeve cut apart because it was cutting off circulation to his hand:

^^^^Which I have a question - do they not have 'dress rehearsals' in practice or something? I mean they were lucky that the judges let them re-start their program.

Grishuk had a problem at Worlds 97, in her FD. I think her skirt was a bit long.

Interesting stuff! I wasn't expecting anything in particular but keep sharing!

Also could never see myself skating in a leotard. And it's not that I think of it as immodest but coming from having a really conservative Asian mother and the times I had to "show skin", do figure skaters just become comfortable with it?

Whenever I see a female skater doing a spiral or something of the nature where one foot is above the head, I'm like "woah such beautiful extension and omg I'm looking at her crotch" [emoji13]

Some skaters use clear fishing line to sew their buns into place. I skate on a synchro team and we just gel the heck out of it and clip things from here to kingdom come. As for wardrobe, maybe someone with a good memory can help me out here but I remember either a pairs or dance team -- the hooks on her skate got caught on his costume and there was this lllooonnnngggg stretch of fabric across the ice until they got untangled. It was pretty funny actually. As for other wardrobe malfunctions? Mostly not an issue since the high-level skaters all have custom costumes that are fitted and re-fitted and re-fitted again to make sure nothing pops out.

I think it was Totmianina& Marinin

Rubleva of Rubleva & Shefer had a strap break on her costume. She skated most of her Finnstep CD with the top of her costume exposing her chest.

Yup, I know what you mean. The spirals haven't bothered me so much but some of those pairs lifts are another story (as in the guy's hand position)...yikes! :jaw:

.... Jason Brown has talk about how he does his ponytail. He has also posted a pic of all his products. The answer seems to be "use a lot stuff"

Thx, StitchMonkey. Never got around to reading the Today article before. Thx to you and Jason, I have learned that "hair glue" is a thing -- and it is a thing that is a necessity for certain hair.
The oeuvre re Jason's hair prep would not be complete without this tweet and photo. ;)

At the Sochi Olympics, Maia Shibutani's dress got caught on Alex's shirt during a lift making her have to stay in the lift for an extra second so she good detatch. This resulted in a deduction.

Bad luck with wardrobe malfunctions has struck the Shibutanis on at least two other occasions -- going back before last season.
Sorry that I don't really remember the details. In one case, the solution for next time was to shorten Maia's skirt.

Interesting thread! :D

This is not about costumes but about makeup, but I've always wondered if it is possible to wear fake eyelashes. Do they stay during jumps and all those spinning? Does anyone know? :)

I don't know how you can ever feel comfortable with it if you ask me.
Skin-color tights are mandatory which is why you see a little too much skin and crotches, yuck.
Come to think of it, i used to wear black tights after i found out skin-color tights made me look half naked, i didn't care what anyone said though. Then all of a sudden i started to recieve 3 or 2 points deduction even when i skated my best so i just quit.

Now this is a beautiful and modest costume apart from the skin color on the upper body. The best part is you can pay attention to skating now instead of vomiting.

Now this is an immodest costume.

I doubt Yulia looks great now huh?

I didn't think either of her costumes were immodest, she's still looks fine. There's no difference, they're both wearing tights and the same amount of skin is covered up! Their skin is covered up and I know it and they know it so it's fine by me. Plus black tights add nothing to a purple and orange dress with gold accents, instead it's quite distracting when you have something so black on the bottom half.

What kind of materials are used for costumes? The woman that makes my daughter's outfits uses swim suit material. From that you either "glue" on the sequin or "paint" on the pattern.

With over the boot tights, skaters usually snag them the first time they are worn (toe pick snags them). Keep a roll of flesh colored medical tape in the competition bag so that you can put the tape on the skates in the area that "matches" to the hole in the tights. I learned that at Adult Nationals a couple of years back.

To create good bun, either use a "bun maker" or cut off the ends of an old sock. To keep it in place, I use a bunny net (purchased at the ballet store) along with a bunch of hair gel, bobby pins, and hair spray. I have never tried the fishing wire trick.

To keep you smiling, put Vasaline petroleum gel on your teeth.

Going back to the question about a new pair of laces - about $3 at my local pro shop (I can't even get a kids Happy Meal for that). Some people are "good scouts" so they are always prepared; others live by the seat of their of the pants. Some of the differences may be finances; another part is just how people are wired.

I'm not seeing what Yulia is wearing as an 'immodest' costume, somebody took a freeze frame at the Olympics with a very expensive camera and got a couple shots of her doing extremely difficult, flexible moves and the waistband of her tights are showing - unless you want the female skaters wearing pants - that picture will happen to most of the very flexible skaters.

I consider 'immodest' costumes to be designed with a lot of see-through fabric or illusion fabric covering something other than the skater's arms.

If the eyelashes are professionally put on with the right glue, you can get them to stay on for a very long time. I did a quick Google search and the fake eyelashes that are individually attached to regular eyelashes can last as much as 60 days.

Awesome thread! I've also wondered about these things...

I was wondering, for those past figure skaters (or anyone who knows :) ) Is it possible to have "short shorts" instead of the v-cut style under the skirt of a figure skating dress? Kind of like this, but hidden under the skirt material:
http://www.mondor.com/fantasy-on-ice-tunic.html

I always thought that the dresses were very beautiful, but the cut of some dresses, kind of distracting. I would also like to test one day, and I wanted to specially order that shorts-style covering. Any opinions / info would be great :)

Actaully here's a huge difference.
In Yulia's case everybody can clearly see a wedgie, crotch and bums, now we don't see anythying like that in Hwi Choi's costume do we.That's because it is covered up.
It's too obvious Yulia's outfit is far more distracting, speaking of which, didn't Kaetlyn's outfit cause so much attention compared to Hwi Choi's?
If Kaetlyn didn't wear skin-color tights nobody would even care.:ohwell:
Anyways i was just saying which one caused a lot of attention and which did not. :)

I don't want skaters to wear pants considering it's not gymnastics, tights are just fine as long as it's not skin-color.
