USFS published the International Challenge Cup assignments on Feb. 1st: http://www.usfigureskating.org/Athletes.asp?id=216
This is a spring international developmental competition to which skaters are selected based on 2008 U.S. Nationals results at the senior/junior/novice levels.

This will be the first international for all 9 of these athletes. I've added 2008 Nationals placements in brackets [S=senior, J=junior, N=novice].

Senior: Becky Bereswill [S10]

Junior Ladies: Brittney Rizo [J3], Amanda Dobbs [J5]

Junior Men: Andrew Gonzales [J3], Daniel O'Shea [N1]

Junior Dance: Kaylyn Patitucci/Karl Edelmann [J12]

Novice Ladies: Marissa Secundy [N1]

Novice Men: David Wang [N3]

Some background: Last year, this was a new international competition that only had ladies' events (senior/junior/novice) and the 3 USA girls in the junior event were Rachael Flatt (5th in senior at 2007 Nationals; she won gold in The Hague), Alexe Gilles (5th in junior at Nats; silver in The Hague) and Chrissy Hughes (6th in junior at Nats; bronze in The Hague) and Angela Maxwell in novice ('07 novice champ; gold in The Hague).

This year, the Challenge Cup competition has been expanded to include men (senior/junior/novice) and ice dance (senior and junior). Like last year, selections are made among U.S. skaters and dance teams that have NOT yet competed on the JGP.

Japan's singles assignments (as posted in the Japanese Nationals thread on 11/26/07 at FSU) are:
Men - Yukihiro YOSHIDA (4th at Jr. Nationals in late November) and Tatsuki MACHIDA (7th at Jr. Nats)
Ladies - Shoko ISHIKAWA (3rd in Jr. Nats)

Official site for the competition: http://www.challenge-cup.com/live-2008/kunstrijden/challengecup/index_eng.asp

This is a great idea! A real international meet and not a cheesefest. Is it really for 2nd Tier Skaters only?

I have notes on all but Daniel O'Shea (must have missed him at Nats), and All of the Novices. It wont be televised, but I'd be interested in the results anyway.

Sylvia - I presume there are no Pairs so I can not expect Carman/Knierim? Correct?
There are no pairs events in The Hague, but even if there were, Brynn Carman and Christopher Knierim don't meet the ISU age requirements for Novice (he's too old) or Junior Pairs (she's too young) this season. Carman/Knierim WILL be ISU Junior (JGP/Jr. Worlds) age-eligible in 2008-09 for that one season only.

BTW, I wouldn't call this a "2nd Tier" competition -- it's used to give young skaters an opportunity to experience an international competition overseas and, for some, it will be preparation for a Junior Grand Prix comp. this fall.

I'm sure this will not be televised and I doubt Icenetwork is able to carry skating outside the US and Canada. So I have to rely on results and the kindness of of those present to send in youtubes.

I thougt the ISU age requirements are valid only for the following championships (world, world jr., 4CC, Europe, Olympics)?

ISU age requirements apply to the ISU Junior Grand Prix and all senior, junior and novice internationals sanctioned by the ISU.

Thanks for the link.

It is interesting, that Kristoffer Berntsson, Alban Préaubert and Pavel Kaška will start there. They will be 10 days later at the world championships too.

Another International event that Canada has sent no one to! No wonder our ladies lack confidence when they get to the international events when Skate Canada won't send them to this events so they can gain experience. Also it would be nice if we sent some younger ones here so they get seen by international judges and they get to see what other skaters are doing. It's not fair for them to just gear themselves and their training based on what they have as competition at home. Let them get out there and see what the other skaters are doing so they will know what it takes to succeed at these events.

Why no Canadian skaters at this event? This would have been a great opportunity to give the Junior and Novice medalists a reward for their achievement, and a chance to experience international competition.

Totally agree. And from what I am reading, it sounds like a decent field for what isn't even considered a B event.

The sad thing is that for the most part our top novice/junior ladies only do summer competitions where in many cases they don't have any real competition. It is not abnormal in a summer competition in Canada at the junior level for over 75% of the field fail to land a double axel or triple jump. They might shine in the summer competition ( and hence get selected for JGP's on that basis ) but they don't have the experience of competing against high quality competition ( and dealing with the extra pressure that creates).

Our ladies especially need to compete in high quality fields. Obviously there is more pressure on a skater when the field is strong than when the field is super weak.

Why Skate Canada doesn't look at the successful ice dance program ( where we send our most promising novice and junior dancers to Lake Placid by the bucketload) and apply the same principles to the ladies is beyond me.

Chuck - see my earlier post! We for once were in agreement! Canada is really missing the boat on these events. They need to get our young skaters out there in competitions no matter where they mind finish. They simply need the experience so when they do get sent to the big events they already know some of what to expect. Our Jr Ladies champ didn't get to go to worlds and prob will be overlooked for assignments for next year so why not send her here to get seen internationally.
