2009 Worlds in LA - Alert

Tenorguy ... I would really appreciate it if you could keep us posted on those new hotels going up. I would like to stay very close to the Staples Center if possible ... I've been to LA so many times, so I won't be doing any sightseeing. It will be skating, skating, skating for me!!! I'm assuming there are places to eat around the Staples Center as well?

Nymkfan - I certainely will keep everyone posted... of course its a bit premature, but I will post the new hotels. Speaking of eating, there's a great old place called The Original Pantry that's never been closed since WWII here's the link: http://www.pantrycafe.com/ and its only 2 blocks north of Staples.

One of the very best memories I have of the Staples Center occurred when Nationals was held there I think in 2004 (right after Olys) - I got to see Michelle's exhibition FOG and I will never forget her flowing absolutely silently in front of a sold out crowd. You could literally hear a pin drop; absolutely magical.

I'm wondering if anyone remembers from 2002 in which hotel(s) the event headquarters was located, or in which one the skaters and coaches stayed? I'm asking because one of two situations may exist - one, they may not reserve rooms for non-skating related visitors, or two, the number of rooms in that hotel may be extremely limited.

The official hotel where the event headquarters was located and skaters and coaches stayed was the Millennium Biltmore (It was just on TV-- some of the American Idol LA auditions were held there.) The other official LOC hotels where fans stayed were the Hyatt and the Omni. The Hyatt was the closest to Staples, but I don't think anyone could actually walk to Staples. IIRC, one would have to walk across busy highway like streets and jump over barriers to walk to Staples. IIRC, because of this, I don't think there were any hotels, even non-official ones, where you could just walk to Staples.

I had friends who used public transportation and ended up with no way to get back to their hotel after late night practices, at least from the farther flung practice sections in El Segundo. So, an official bus pass turned out to be a near necessity.

But, I guess Worlds doesn't ever offer official buses for fans, like Nationals? That's too bad! So, I hope these new hotels can solve the walking to Staples problem. If I decide to go, I don't want to have to rent a car.

with the USFSA running it though wouldn't they be able to do buses if they wanted?

for worlds - are you able to purchase a practice pass like you are at nationals?

We have family that live at Hermosa Beach. How bad is the drive in the morning? Should we rent a car & drive or get a room close by?

I say you should rent a car. It shouldn't be that bad if you avoid 6am-9amish traffic and 4pm-6pm rush hour.

s8addict - I am not an LA expert... been there twice and the first time I was 5 and asleep during the trip lol

I used to be an avid practice watcher. I even predicted Alissa Cizney for the podium back in 2003 Nats watching her at practice, but since I know what you see in practice does not necessarily mean the same in competition, I can miss practices, enjoy a good breakfast, and watch practices when its more convenient.

I like the practices because I can get an idea of where the show stopping elements are and I can be ready during competition to shoot off a few photos

that and I can talk with friends without being shushed
