I just tuned in to catch the US team and the Canadian team, both teams
have a lot of potential and had some really nice moments in their FD.

:disapp: for you then? ;)

:disapp:

:drama:

Seriously, all the teams in final group look promising. Some more than others. I think I liked the French the most.

Edit: Mengs and E/B had highest BV. But their GOE pretty much suck.

Shame about C/P but being only 15/14 this is a team of the future. They know they can compete with the best teams even at this age. This will just make them stronger for the next event.

All these dances :disapp: I liked Bratislava event much more. P/V should drop this dance right tonight. :disapp: The music :disapp:

Edit: the GOE bonus for their spin

P/V's FD turned out MUCH better than I was expecting - if "crazy" was the theme they were going for they nailed it (I more or less loved the dance for all its dramatiques so not trying to be snarky :p). Their spin deserved +3 all across the board IMO - it's one of the best I've seen juniors or seniors. Seems like they traded in some levels for the extra passion though ...

Gutted for C/P - they would've easily medaled were it not for the fall ... dang it. Well, they are both still very young, and it's nice for E/B to get a jgp medal to show for their juniors career at least (I don't see them getting anywhere in Team Russia once they age out).

Yes. It's the weakness of Betina. She said herself that sometimes she got so caught trying to 'act' on the ice that she completely forgots to watch her technique. I think she will tone it down sooner or later, now I'm just enjoing her over-emotional style, somehow it suits her.

Edit: And I agree about the spin. Very nice position, smooth transitions between positions, and it seems like they constantly accelerate the speed of the rotations during the spin.

I wouldn't ordinarily say this, but Bagin needs to bulk up. He's too small for his partner

Betina and Yuri are very talented. I really wish Russia had good choreographers willing to work with their junior ice dancers rather than trash talking their senior pairs in the press. The music made me cringe at times. Honestly their dancers should just boycott control rentals because Russian specialists seem to be devoid of good taste and plain common sense.
I personally don't mind contemporary pop music that much, although it's not the music that I usually listen to. I think this version of Beyonce's song was pretty interesting compared to the original - at least it doesn't sound cheaply commercial. Also, the cuts were not jarring like they often are. And the choreography is really interesting at places. But I understand how this music could be jarring to more conservative ears (this is not intended as an offence).

No offence taken, lauravvv. Rewatching it, the work is good the choreography has merit and Betina can sell it, but they didn't have to make it so hard for her and Yuri. I can only imagine how much better this dance could be if the whole thing weren't so rough. Or maybe it's just not my cup of tea but these two are talented.

What I like the most is that Betina and Yuriy don't hold themself back, their skating style is very confident. Even when they're not at their best they still go forward like a big iron truck, they don't care about holes and hubbles. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I definitely appreciate this quality in them.

Why all the distaste for E/B? They always look like they have so much fun out there. Especially him. Yes their music cuts were strange and they might not go anywhere in seniors but for now I enjoy the charm.

E/P has to have one of the most atrocious music cuts I've ever heard. What did their team do? Throw a cd in a blender, hit puree, then choreograph to what survived? They're very very lucky C/P had that fall, or they would not be on that podium.

The French are MUCH better than their program, which is a quintessential Detroit School cut and paste job, the kind Igor has been churning out for years. They have a very traditional, lyrical quality to them (which, considering the history of French ice dancing, is quirky in its own right).

C/P have TONS of potential, but that FD is so cutesy poo I thought I would overdose on the forced sweetness of it all. I understand they are very young and you want to give them an age-appropriate program, but really, keep the insulin handy when you watch it. You just might need it. I still am now an Official Fan of them though.

P/V. Well that ponytail should probably be given equal billing, shouldn't it? She worked it like her life depended on it whipping about. The program is the very definition of "try hard": see how "innovative" and "thinking out of the box" we are? Yup, definitely try hard. Really, someone should sit her down and play her Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd and then tell her, Stop Now. This is Already Happening To You.

Pretty disappointing event.

Well, it should be better next week, hopefully.

It's like they still think it's 1999, 2000. 2001. Though the tackiness is positively endemic.

Well you're right; here's hoping next week is better. :)
