Unacceptable. Completely unacceptable, how ridiculous. If he wants to skate in shows instead of Nationals then there's a solution for that: he turns pro. Otherwise, the competitions come first. Demanding the rescheduling of your skate just so you can go skate in a show is not on and the federation should not have allowed it.
Can you imagine the uproar if Yuzuru did that at Japanese Nationals, or Kovtun, or Jason or Max or someone? It does not happen. If NHK and the Senior Men at Australian Nationals had clashed, the answer would have been, Sorry Brendan, you will get a bye to 4CCs/Worlds selection, but you won't be National Champion this year.
Oh, get over it. Deniss still had to compete, he wasn't given an automatic bye. If that happened, you might have a point, but it didn't. There were so few skaters here, do you think the schedule mattered in the slightest? It didn't. If anything, if Deniss had skated right before or after the other 2 guys, the vast difference in their levels of talent & ability would have been even more glaring. This wasn't Japanese or Russian Nationals. Not even comparable.
I hope you got more upset about Plushy's "special treatment" before Sochi than you are about this tiny Fed's competition schedule.
And one last point - the Latvian Fed is not wealthy. It would be absolutely stupid of them to prevent their very best skater from earning money he desperately needs for training. It's part of a long-term investment & if that's "special treatment" to you, so be it. Whether you like him or not, Deniss put Latvia on the skating map, & his continued success will only help other Latvian skaters. You think all those Spanish skaters could afford to train abroad now, if not for Javier? Would Korea be developing such a strong program if not for Yuna?
