The 2025 World Team Trophy is scheduled to take place Apr 17-20, 2025, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.

The ISU World Team Trophy (in Figure Skating) is an ISU Event announced in respect of the current ISU Constitution and Regulations. As per ISU Regulations, Rule 100, paragraphs 3. a) & b) the ISU owns all rights to the ISU World Team Trophy. The ISU World Team Trophy will be held with the approval and the assistance of the International Skating Union, under the responsibility of the organizing ISU Members concerned (in this case the Japan Skating Federation – JSF) and in accordance with the current ISU Constitution and General Regulations 2024, the ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules Single & Pair Skating and Ice Dance 2024 and all relevant ISU Communications.

The ISU World Team Trophy format is based on a competition consisting of the six (6) best national Teams from ISU Members with a special provision for the host ISU Member to be included as Qualified Member. Each Team will be composed of 2 Men Single Skaters, 2 Women Single Skaters, 1 Pair and 1 Ice Dance team (a total of 8 Skaters per Team). Each Team nominates a Captain from Team Skaters who represents the Team including during the medal giving ceremony.

Six (6) ISU Members will qualify based on the scoring scale used for the ISU World Standing points (see applicable scale in sub-paragraph e) below) scored by its best 2 Women Single Skaters, best 2 Men Single Skaters, the best Pair and the best Ice Dance Couple primarily at ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events and Final season 2024/25 and the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2025, plus possibly the ISU European Figure Skating Championships / ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2025, the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2025 and ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating season 2024/25.

The 6 Teams, having accumulated the highest number of points by the above-mentioned number and discipline of Skaters/Couples in the above-mentioned ISU Events and the criteria outlined below, will qualify. If a Team would qualify by points with less than the above-mentioned number and disciplines of Skater/Couples contributing to the qualification points, such Team would only be considered qualified, if points are achieved in at least 3 disciplines, otherwise the Team with the next highest amount of points fulfilling the criteria will be considered qualified. If there is a tie among Teams’ subject to qualify, the Team having earned the higher number of points at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2024 will be qualified. If a tie persists, the qualifying ISU Member will be decided by draw. The Team of the host ISU Member, if not qualified under the applicable Qualifying System, will receive a wild card entry as Team number 6 replacing the Team finishing in that place in the Standings.

Wow...for less than $600, you get to see lots of heavy hitters....here is a bit of history about the event.

I was at the European thread, but as this event is different competition, I write here. Usually I have not followed this much at all as the timing has not been good for me, but this time it looks Finland would be able to be invited? Is 10 bets teams based on worlds standings are invited, if I understood something? So the last teams may change after worlds?

World Team Trophy and the Olympic Team Event have different qualification criteria, with 6 teams at World Team Trophy and 10 teams at the Olympics.

I'll repost the information that I posted in the Canadian thread about World Team Trophy since there was some discussion there:

They haven't posted the announcement yet for the event this year, so I had to go onto Internet Archive to find the 2023 announcement.

On the second page, under Basic Event Format and Qualifying System:

"b) Six (6) ISU Members will qualify based on the scoring scale used for the ISU World Standing points (see applicable scale in sub-paragraph e) below) scored by its best 2 Women Single Skaters, best 2 Men Single Skaters, the best Pair and the best Ice Dance Couple primarily at ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events and Final season 2022/23 and the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2023, plus possibly the ISU European
Figure Skating Championships / ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2023, the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2023 and ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating season 2022/23"

and

"d) For the purpose of the ISU World Team Trophy Qualifying System, the basis is to attribute to each ISU Member points according to the scale below (sub-paragraph e) on the basis of the two best results (the highest number of points earned) of two different Single Skaters Men, of two different Single Skaters Women, of one Pair and of one Ice Dance couple at each of the two (2) groups of ISU Events listed below (the applicable Events):

i) in one of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating individual events or Final (senior) season 2022/23. If Skaters/Couples of an ISU Member have not obtained points in the above-mentioned ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating individual events and Final (senior) season 2022/23, then the best result in one event of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating individual events (only in individual events but not the Final) season 2022/23 can be considered.

ii) in the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2023. If Skaters/Couples of an ISU Member have not obtained World Standing points in the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2023, then it is possible to use the ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2023 respectively the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2023 and if needed the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2023.

It must be understood that in spite of the fact that the Qualified ISU Members for the ISU World Team Trophy can only participate with two Single Skaters each Women and Men, one Pair and one Ice Dance couple, for the ISU World Team Trophy qualifying system the highest number of World Standing points*) per discipline (Women, Men, Pair Skating/Ice Dance) earned at each of the two above-mentioned applicable Events will be used when cumulating the World Standing points*) earned per ISU Member. This means that more and different Skaters/Couples per ISU Member may contribute to the cumulative number of World Standing points*) per ISU Member. Practically, two to four different Single Skaters Women and two to four different Single Skaters Men (the maximum four different Skaters would be two different Skaters each at two Events) could contribute to the cumulative number of World Standing points*) per ISU Member. For Pair Skating and Ice Dance couples it could be one to two Pairs respectively one to two Ice Dance couples per ISU Member that could contribute to the cumulative number of World Standing points*) per ISU Member (the maximum two different couples would be one couple each at the two applicable Events)."

@Jumping_Bean did calculations on the standings before Europeans based on those rules with the top 6 at the time:
Current WTT qualification standings after the GP (based on my own calculations & the assumptions that the 2023 rules will not change this year):
  1. Japan - 3604
  2. USA - 3573
  3. Italy - 2654
  4. France - 2041
  5. Canada - 1813
  6. Georgia - 1587
(Close behind are Germany (1401), South Korea (1373), China (1240), Great Britain (1100) and Switzerland (1091))

The qualification for the Team Event at the Olympics can be found in here on page 4 under D.3 (Team Event Qualification) - https://stillmed.olympics.com/media...m/Qualification-System-for-Figure-Skating.pdf

As Euros have already taken place, there are of course already some changes to the top 6.
  1. Italy - 6604
  2. France - 4549
  3. Georgia - 4037
  4. Japan* - 3604
  5. USA* - 3573
  6. Switzerland - 2863
  7. Great Britain - 2806
  8. Germany - 2497
  9. Finland - 2173
  10. Poland - 2131
Keep in mind, 4CC, Jr Worlds and especially Sr Worlds are still coming up, so the rankings can still shift significantly.
(Canada and Korea are currently in 11th and 13th, but will likely leapfrog a number of the European countries ahead of them following 4CC)

Could Korea participate without a pairs team? 🤔 They had one in 2023, but they split up...

They have a pair team again now - Cho Hyejin posted in December about teaming up with Rodion Marinskii:
If he's released to compete internationally for Korea, they could do WTT if Korea qualifies.

If she does go, it would be really amazing for two of Hyejin's partnership debuts to be at WTT, and it would be a kind of record that would be practically impossible to beat.

Hopefully this one can last longer than her other ones. Since Korea will likely make it the team competition, this would be a comparatively easy way for a new team to easily make it to the Olympics (especially in comparison to how restricted the actual pairs competition will be). I know Korea is a comparatively easier country to get citizenship, but there's not that much time left...

Given that Ye Quan started representing Korea in 2021 and got his citizenship in December 2024, I doubt that Rodion could get Korean citizenship in time for the 2026 Olympics, but we'll see what happens

Can a team compete if they don't have a pairs team ready (Korea)? I mean, we have seen videos of their training, but will they be ready to compete ?

If my math is mathing, post 4CC the standings are as follows:

1. USA - 7459
2. Japan - 7056 (fixed, I gave Higuchi 4th place points by mistake)
3. Italy - 6604
4. Canada - 4587
5. France - 4549
6. South Korea - 4313

Georgia (4037), Great Britain (2806), Switzerland (2780) and Kazakhstan (2589) round out the top 10.

Georgia may surpass South Korea after Junior Worlds, depending on how Konstantin Supatashvili and Inga Gurgenidze place.

Note that totals can go down as well as up after Worlds.

For example, if the US sends 2 or more women singles entries to Worlds, the points earned there will replace the points earned at 4CC for women's singles. They may be higher, they may be lower, or they may be similar.

Since Canada is only sending one woman to Worlds, they will keep their top 4CC points (as long as it is a different skater from the one being sent to Worlds, which is the plan).

Individual skaters get the keep points from the highest-pointing of (4CC, Worlds) for their individual standings/rankings. For team qualification purposes, 4CC can only be used if there are not enough Worlds skaters with points.
