Cohen: No More Tears Left to Cry

A couple of peculiarities in the article. Talking about Michelle, Tara, Sarah and now Kimmie as American teens who won world championships, "and Hughes, of course, was the 2002 Olympic champion at age 16." (Memories fade, but didn't Tara do something or other, too?)

Also, the way the article works in Mao Asada winning the Grand Prix championship, makes it seem like the author is saying that this was another event that Sasha blew.

Anyway, about Sasha...

Well, Rgirl, one of your two scenarios (senarii?) came true. The one where Sasha was completely spent, body and spirit, and was not able to mount a challenge for the gold medal. (For those who don't remember Rgirl's earlier predictions post, the other scenario was, Sasha comes out loaded for bear and blows everyone else off the ice.)

In retrospect (always 20-20) Sasha just didn't have anything left in this contest and should have stayed home.

I like Sasha's comment about not having any tears left. I think it is truthful. Although she did seem on the verge of crying after her LP, I think it was just the general emotion of the moment -- all emotions jumbled together -- that were welling up, not anything specific along the lines of, oh woe is me. More like -- I did the best I could, screw it.

I think she'll be back. Why not? She is still the U.S. National Champion, she still has to feel in her heart, "Michelle's over the hill and as for Kimmie and these other whippersnappers -- pul-lease! Kimmie just had a lucky day. See you next year in Spokane, chump!"

MM

I think she's just to numb to it by now. Although if you look at the gettyimages of the podium shots it looks like she may be crying in a couple of them. (like Image #57183264 when shes looking over at kimmie getting her medal)

If i were her, after all those dissapoinments, I would have plopped down in the middle of the ice and cired like a baby until someone physically removed me.

When I clicked on to the articles, it just said something about adding Kimmie's name to the list of American teen champions, naming Michelle, Tara and Sarah, without specifying whether it was World or Olys. I thought it better than clarifying that MK and Tara were teenage World champs, and Sarah (who never won worlds) joins Tara as teenage Oly champs.

About Sasha -- the more I think about it, the stronger I feel that Sasha's problems are physical, and connected either to her early back injury (the frequent falls pre-date the groin injury) or to her extreme flexibility. I would not be surprised if she retires before she gets badly hurt. OTOH, MM, you may be right, about thinking that Kimmie had a lucky day -- but Michelle Kwan might think the same thing in her heart, too. If so, I think Nats could be extremely interesting.

I know this thread is about Sasha, but I just wanted to make a comment about the statement that Kimmie had a lucky day.

Kimmie's QR skate was exactly like her LP skate, from what I heard. I was too tired that evening to go to the QR that evening, and missed it. From what I heard, she landed two 3-3 combinations, and at the end she landed the 2A-2t-2R. She skated a clean SP. She did a 3Z-2t instead of the planned 3Z-3t, and that was the only thing she missed in the whole competition. Pretty impressive. That's not the example of someone just having a lucky day. Kimmie has worked hard and learned from her experiences. To be fair, Sasha has also learned from her experiences, and she too has developed over the years. Somehow it has not resulted in a world championship (or a US championship while competing against Michelle).

Kimmie struck me from the beginning as someone with a champion's heart, like Michelle. I actually thought she would be the next Michelle Kwan. I know she is going to develop artistically and become a great skater. She has gone through her struggles (fall at US Nationals, mistakes at the Olys) and she seems to have learned from her experiences. She will have her weak moments in the future; every skater does. However, in this competition- as always- Sasha was beaten by skaters who are more consistent than her.

I thought that after the US nationals Sasha would develop the confidence and consistency that comes with it (even though she had a couple of mistakes it was a strong skate). In the Olys she really fought back after mistakes on the first two jumps and skated well rest of the way. It did not happen here. She made 2 major mistakes in the QR, one small one (3Z landing) in the SP, and several in the LP. In fact she made mistakes on all jumps but two in the LP. I am wondering if she went unprepared to worlds? She did have many engagements (Hollywood, etc.) after the Olys. She did not appear to be injured because in practices her jumps looked fine (she did not do a lot of jumps but she landed most of those she attempted). Other ladies seemed to skate inspired performances, and I did not sense that in Sasha (except for her SP). May be she was too distracted or was she too exhausted after the Olys? Did she go to worlds because her major competitors- Shizuka and Irina- were not there? I thought this would be an easy win for her. It did not happen that way.

The article certainly missed Tara's OGM- 1998 is not that far back, is it? In fact she will always remain the youngest Olympic champion (age 15, and younger than Sonjia Hennie at her first OGM).

The portion about Mao Asada was only talking about the success the Japanese ladies had this year (Shizuka's OGM, Fumie's world silver, and Mao's GPF gold). I don't think it was in reference to Cohen's failure to win. Of course Sasha was not at the GPF but I don't think that was a point of reference in this case.

Well I have a hi-res version of that pic and she's not crying, although it darn near looks like she's trying not to...

Did you link any of those pics here??? I missed all the podium pictures it seems!

No I didn't. I posted some before but 1) my uploader stopped working and 2) my threads weren't getting too many responses so I figured people didn't want to see them and I stopped posting them. But a few from the Ladies SP and Ladies QR are still up.

Oh...sorry to hear that! I did see the QR and SP's you posted, just want to see podium pictures. Do you know where I can find some?

Just do a search for "2006 world figure skating championships" on Getty Images. There are plenty of photos there. :)

actually on the second page of the article it mentions how Meissner now knows how Tara felt when she won worlds in 97 and the olys in 98

it was a very bland article, IMHO....
