I am looking for some good padded shorts for my figure skater. I saw the ones on "the inside edge" website but am a worried about ordering from a company whose only contact info is an address. I have also looked at crash pads (extremely expensive) and the compression shorts on Rainbo sports. I'm not sure which are good or if there are other less expensive options out there that are good.

The type of crash pads you want depends on the level of the skater. For example, I have the knee pad from that website, Glacierskater, but, if you go into your jumps with a lot of speed, if they're particularly high, or if you're working on harder jumps, they ten to slide A LOT (I had this problem a lot when I was first working on triples). Sometimes, if you're only hitting one small part (I have scar tissue on my knee from a lot of falls before) all you need is a small pad (I use cosmetic pads, which, at about a dollar for three, are a lot cheaper than crash pads -- and they don't slip as much).

When I was younger I had a crash pad that everyone just referred to as a butt pad. I don't know if they still make them, but they went on kind of like a diaper (a little embarassing, but since everyone wore the, no one cared) so they didn't slide at all. After a while, my coach made me stop wearing it because she said I was losing the fear of falling that made me want to stand up, but until that point, it worked really well.

I got the impression that skate mom and her skater a new at this...they do have the shorts that you can slide the pads in and out of that are thicker. I had not thought about the higher jumps, and pads sliding...

Also, recently I purchased a foam camp pad from Wal*Mart in the camping section and made my own crash pads.

butt pads

skater mom..
I know one mom who put a diaper and attached it to the tailbone area of the shorts and was effective - same as the expensive butt pads! Please do use it - my daughter finished her figure skating at 13 with a broken tailbone! Luckily now she is a top ranked speed skater, but in retrospect I wish she had used padding as now she can't ever sit on a hard surface - 2 years later

crash pads

Do you sew? I've made several types for my daughter over the years. The one that worked the best was like a diaper. I used a pair of underpants as a pattern, making overlaps on the side seams which could close with velcro strips. Then I made various covered pads (two for hips and one for tailbone protection) which also attached with velcro strips. That way, it could be taken off easily and she could chose which protection she wanted based on what she would be doing that session. I used carpet underpadding for the pads. Sound weird but it worked and there was no slippage!

Padding

I used to have very thin pads that did not help alot when I was jumping. If you go to www.jenskates.com you can find the ultra thick padding that is great for jumping. I have the tailbone pad and it helps alot. If you put it inbetween your skating pants and tights it doesn't slip too much either. The pads are relatively cheap compared to the price of the shorts. Good luck! :)

shorts

well they have them usually at ur local skating store. try figure 8 skating boutique or the figure skating boutique, both of whom have an online catoloque.
