Do storage straps cause Jackson boots to break down faster?

Recently I've started to use the storage strap that came with the Jackson boot and am wondering if it's a coincidence that my skates feel more broken down or whether it's due to using the lace straps on the bottom 2 hooks behind the tongue (ie opposite of how you would wear them if your foot's inside)

I’m going to say probably not—any pressure a storage strap exerts on the boots is nothing compared to you skating and jumping in them. They’re probably just breaking down normally.

I'm going to agree no. And the hooks shouldn't matter either, as long as you started by breaking them in w/o the very top hook not laced. Those don't need to be laced up all the way from the get go. Once you start to break the boots in then you can lace it all the way up the hooks. Only lace to the 2nd hook when first breaking in.

What model boots do you have? How old were they before you started using the storage straps? What was your skating level and skating frequency? The straps simply prop the tongue open. Hard to imagine how that would accelerate breakdown.

??? I'm confused about your comment regarding lacing. I never said anything about lacing or how I tie my skates when I'm actually wearing them without the storage straps on. Are you saying that it doesn't matter if I place the storage straps on hook # 1,2 at the bottom, hook # 2,3 in the middle, or hook # 3,4 at the top while not wearing them?

Wait- that's there entire purpose?! Propping the tongue open.... I thought they were meant to keep the heel from widening when not in use like the edea ones, which would imply some sort of tension across the strap and hooks

No. You didn't mention lacing with hooks, but I DID. Because you are wondering why it feels like your boots are prematurely breaking down and that could definitely be a reason if you didn't know how to properly lace using the hooks and many will lace all the way up including the top hook from the beginning and ruin their skates and cause them to break down early. I knew what the strap was meant for so that's why I mentioned the other information to help you.

* You got me curious, so I did a little more digging. I have a pair of Jackson 5362. I checked my folder that contained the purchase receipt and instruction booklet; I also found the straps there (I've never bothered using them). Neither the booklet nor the Jackson website mentions the straps.

* If you do a Google search, you will find two unboxing videos for the Jackson 5320. In one video, the straps do not appear. But in the other video, when the host unpacks the boots, the straps are attached across the top two rows of hooks; tongues are in the normal position; straps across the fronts of the tongues. So apparently the straps were used for shipping (at least on some shipments). They weren't installed when I got my boots, but the fitter could have removed them to inspect the boots; the straps were tossed in the box.

* I also tried the straps as you have used them: tongues pulled out; straps in back of the tongues, attached across the bottom two rows of hooks. They do keep the tongues propped open; but the tongues on the 5300 series stay propped open without aid of the straps anyways.

* The straps apply mild compression across the throat of the uppers (more compression in the shipping mode than in the propping mode). But the throat is flexible, and any widening in that area is readily taken care of during lacing. There's no way that the straps (in either mode) would affect the fit of the heel.

* You didn't answer the questions I asked in my Reply #4.

Thanks for this! I used to wear Jacksons myself before they changed the shape, and I never saw any kind of straps on or with them. I was wondering what on earth "storage straps" were, and decided either they were something that came along after I switched brands, or my memory was failing. I'm reassured now that not as many brain cells have died off as I was beginning to think :drama:
