Maia And Alex Shibutani announce return to competitive skating

I have liked and disliked some of their material... but their main issue is that US judges like CPOM better.
Not only that but the international judges like C/P more right now and are ascending while G/P have stagnated a bit over the last two years.

I believe that's because C/P's programs have shown a real musical range the past few seasons and they are willing to do "dramatic" free dances that have a character point-of-view that is choreographically interesting.

I still think that Christina's gold dress was great unexpected operatic theatricality on ice. It showed very well.

I have no idea where the judges will put Shib Sibs other than they will not dethrone Chock and Bates. It is such a risk for them to return. They might not even make the olympics. And if they do hey might end up in the bottom of the top ten or worse outside. I am sure they thought about what their goal was and reasonably what was or is attainable.

Oh, I don't know. A lot of people don't make it to the to the Olym[ics. A lot of people don't win a medal. It's not such a crushing blow or horrible fate.

Would their legacy be tarnished if they are less successful this time around, like Brian Boitano, Katarina Witt and Torvill and Dean in 1994? To me, the only thing that wouldn't sit wiell is if the USFSA showed favoritism to the Shibs over equally deserving teams.

I do think there is a difference when Botano, Torvill and Dean, Witt, Zayak returned. They were much older whereas The Sibs wold age wise be considered in the prime when they returned but probably money wise it means little as they were not particularly marketable in the US. with a OBM and no World title. Regardless I like to think of them going away as OBM so it would be sad to see them middling in 8th or something.

The more I think about this the less happy I am about it. Maybe I still have a bad taste from when they decided they had to do both parts of team event. Lol

I have zero desire to watch them & am not looking forward to the NBC love fest we are going to see. Weird but reality.

I feel for our younger teams. Cp, gp, zk, & even the next tier like the browns & bs, have been on the rise and now it’s possible that only one of them may get to go.

Everything they’ve done since has been rooted in media presence - polo RL, their books, showing up everywhere but figure skating events (& documenting) the past few years.

I’m struggling with this one.

I wonder if you are also unhappy that Davis and White and for Canada Virtue and Moir also chose to do both sections of the dance for the team event. Also remember, by the Shibutanis deciding to do both portions that allowed two ladies to participate in the team event. If they had chosen to only do the one portion, we might never have seen Marai Nagasu skate her perfect triple axel for the first time in competition.

What I think this really should boil down to - if the Shibs end up beating out some of the current teams then it will hopefully be because they're better. And if that's the case, more power to them. I feel like we have some dance teams in the US that are just "also rans!" Once you get past Maddie and Evan there really isn't anyone who stands out internationally! I think we should always field the best team. If the Shibs are on that team then they are on that team. If nothing else it might make the other teams work just a little bit harder to stand out in competition.
