Maria Viktorovna Butyrskaya (Russian: Мария Викторовна Бутырская) is a former Russian figure skater. She was born on 28 June 1972.

She is the 1999 World champion and a three-time European champion (1998, 1999 and 2002). She is the oldest skater and the first Russian to win the World ladies' title and the oldest skater to win the European ladies' title (2002 at age 29). She is also a six-time Russian national champion and multiple winner and medalist of GP series events and other international competitions. Maria represented Russia at two Winter Olympic Games. At the 1998 Olympiad in Nagano she placed 4th and at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City she was 6th.

Maria was very often involved in the choreography of her programs and designed her competitive costumes.

In summer 2006 she married a hockey player, Vadim Khomitsky. They have three children.

In Russia there is an annual competition to commemorate Maria's first Russian Ladies Worlds gold medal called Maria Butyrskaya's Trophy.

She was coached by Elena Tchaikovskaya, Viktor Kudriavtsev and Vladimir Korolov.

[/TABLE]

* Until the 2002/2003 season at the ISU championships events, especially the Worlds, the singles event was composed of three segments: qualification round (QR) A or B, SP and LP (now FS). The factorized result of the LP (FS) performed in the QR was summed up with the results in other segments and formed part of the total score (TS). The above table does not include the results obtained in qualifications, that's why a brief summary may be found below:
- At the 2001 World Championships Maria was 4th in her QA group (6.0 scoring system).
- At the 2001 European Championships Maria was 1st in her QA group (6.0 scoring system).
- At the 2000 World Championships Maria was 1st in her QA group (6.0 scoring system).
- At the 2000 European Championships Maria was 1st in her QA group.
- At the 1999 World Championships Maria was 1st in her QB group.
- At the 1999 European Championships Maria was 1st in her QA group.
- At the 1998 World Championships Maria was 1st in her QB group.
- At the 1997 World Championships Maria was 3rd in her QB group.
- At the 1997 European Championships Maria was 1st in her QA group.
- At the 1996 World Championships Maria was 1st in her QB group.
- At the 1994 European Championships Maria was 3rd in her QA group.
- At the 1993 World Championships Maria was 15th in her QB group and did not qualify to the SP.

Although retired from years, I've decided to open a thread for one of my favourite skaters of all times (it's still under construction). I don't tend to follow Ladies, but Maria is one of those skaters that I most admired (I simply have a soft spot for veterans peaking at the end of their career). She's the 1999 World Champion (her FS to "Otonal" and her victory made me cry with joy and emotions) and a three-time European Champion (1998, 1999 and 2002). She simply deserved her own thread among the Retired Greats.

BTW, on 27 March Maria celebrated 20th anniversary of her gold medal at the 1999 Worlds in Helsinki. Those Worlds were very special for the Russian team as they achieved gold medals in all the cateogires: Yagudin in Men, Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze in Pairs and Krylova & Ovsyannikov in Ice Dance.
