The IOC has suspended North Korea from Beijing because they no-showed at Tokyo.

Not discussing the political ramifications, but for those of us who have been wondering about Ryom and Kim, it appears we won't be learning more about them at the Olympics. Of course, unless I'm mistaken, they weren't on the list for Nebelhorn anyway.

That's ridiculous. I dont recall USA getting suspended for boycotting the olympics in 1980 or the Soviet in 1984. And it wasnt like they didnt attend for political reasons but because of safety reason because of the COVID pandemic. Lots of people were criticizing and protesting the mass movement of athletes into a country that was seeing a surge in the virus

The IOC has offered North Korea vaccination, but they obviously refused to take it.
North Korea was the ONLY country not sending athletes to Tokyo. If you take the money of the IOC you need to attend the Games.

I've not dug into it, but on the surface you are talking decades between the 1980/1984 Games and the Tokyo Games, rules change. Additionally, this possibly isn't just about North Korea not going to Japan, but there's been a lot of conversation that there should be boycotts of the 2022 Beijing Olympics; the IOC needs the Olympics to go on and they don't need the event next year watered down from big-time nations boycotting, because as you pointed out the USA and multiple allies boycotted the 1980 Games, in retaliation the Soviet Union and multiple allies boycotted the 1984 Games, so the IOC might be trying to avoid just an absolute trifecta of financial hell from covid games then 2 boycotted Games.

North Korea and Japan aren't exactly best of buddies, covid might have been a reason but might not be the whole reason.

I find that mind boggling. With how contentions everything was I assumed it was less attended. I mean we hear about people not sending skaters to the Olympics all the time... i just assume such strict (and strange) rules would have managed to spill over and kept athletes home. Not to mention how some countries only have one athlete... if they choose not to go is that a boycott?

Sadly i wonder if other countries were just better at finding more politically acceptable lies to tell.

Remember, North Korea missed the registration deadline for Pyongchang 2018 as well.

The IOC gave them a special chance to send Ryom and Kim, (who I believe were their only actually qualified athletes) along with a few other athletes in other sports.

IF this is the reason, it shows what kind of hell the Olympics really are

The Olympics cost billions of dollars to host. No city is going to spend that if they can’t make it up somehow. And they can’t do that if people don’t go.

Sure they can't. And I don't think such an organization and such an event has much of worth to offer to the world.

ETA: There are a lot of deeply political issues that have been discussed in the past and in the present relating to the IOC and the Olympic games. Surely, if the answer is "country will lose money", then we have to review our worldly values sooner rather than later.

And here I was worried if Chinese Taipei would be allowed to compete...
I am not worrying Taipei but wondering if China would allow “Niang Pao 娘炮” “sissy men,” and peachy costumes on their TV during the Games. China has just passed sweeping laws to ban “effeminate” men’s images in media and society, though gays are not illegal.
