Not sure if this is the right place to talk about it (it's not a single film so I did not know how to put it under movies) or if/how it has been discussed before - please move the post if necessary.

I just came across the old skating movies with Ina Bauer and in general the old German movies of that genre: Kauf dir einen bunten Luftballon, Der Weiße Traum, Ein Stern fällt vom Himmel.
It seems they are free to watch on youtube and I wonder if I will watch them in total or only take a peek and watch some scenes. I think it's very interesting how "der weiße Traum" was called "künstlerisch wertvoll/artistically valuable" by the national socialist film review board and how the remakes were also similar to the Heimatfilm remakes of those times during the 50s and 60s. I have also been thinking about Sonja Henie in this regard and how the picture of the "ice princess" has been shaped during those times. I only knew about those times in terms of figure skating on a very superficial level...
Have you watched the movies or is anyone interested in watching them and talking about them afterwards? Or is it so terrible to watch today you would not recommend it?

I haven't watched any of the movies you mentioned but an off-season watch party sounds like an awesome idea. We could all watch at the same time and do a live thread or just have a discussion afterwards. Do you know if these movies have subtitles on youtube? Otherwise the whole fun will probably be limited to German speakers.

I would love that. Unfortunately they are indeed only in German, no other subtitles. There is also for instance Sun Valley Serenade with Henie of course, which is available in English. I guess I will wait a bit with watching and see if others are interested as well?
