I know! She must be very good at practicing by herself. On her ISU bio, it lists Caroline Zhang as a coach. I was surprised because I’ve never seen her listed for Sherry before, or anyone except those guys from Pottenger Academy sitting with her. Naturally, I wondered if Caroline was her mother, but I looked into it and confirmed that Caroline is not a close relation (maybe no relation at all), nor can I find any connection between her and Sherry. Caroline was a very interesting skater with extraordinary spin positions, and I realized that Sherry is also very good at spins though maybe not as extraordinary as Caroline. I wonder if the ISU bio is incorrect, but now I’m curious. Please let me know if you are aware of any information about Caroline working with Sherry.

I also learned from Fan Zone that Sherry has done Theatre on Ice and her group won the prelim division at National Theatre on Ice in 2019. I wonder if she still is involved? I find this fascinating and wonder if doing theatre may have helped her develop her expression and performance skills.

It also says that she used to work with Laura Lipetsky (Alysa Liu’s first coach). I don’t know anything else about that.

Congratulations to Sherry for winning the Challenge Cup with two new PBs! 🎉 Sherry was first in both segments of the Junior Women’s division.

Her PB short program earned 62 points, with all level 4 spins, a level 3 step, and 1+ on the the triple jumps and the CCoSP4. This program with the 3+2 combo has been reliable for her this season, and although I’m happy I guess I would have liked to see a bit more than 62 for a clean SP considering that she got 60 twice with a fallen triple each time. But I guess a clean 2T really isn’t worth much more than a fallen 3T 🤔.

Sherry’s FS earned 114.23. As on the JGP, a few errors crept in during the second half, though this time they were limited to a pop and a Lv2 spin with negative GOE. That spin is not a normal mistake for her to make so I guess something weird just happened. The bad spin was the second to last element in the program and she followed it up with another Lv4 spin. There was only one q in the program.

All together, she got a new combined PB of 176. This would have been enough for a medal at some JGPs, if memory serves.

I’m really hoping videos of Sherry’s programs arrive on YouTube because right now there aren’t any videos of her FS that don’t have the music removed. If I find any, I will post them here.

I'm excited for Sherry's return to the JGP this week. She has two new programs, which I'm really looking forward to seeing since the stream was muted when she debuted them at the Junior Team Cup.

In case you missed it, she won the Team Cup! She was 6th in the SP with a 60.96 and 1st in the FS with 129.57. I know that domestic scores tend to be a little high, but it looks like she is in good competition shape already. Rather than continue with the 3+2, she did a 3Lz+3T in the SP. She stayed on her feet which is progress but both jumps had some under rotation. Her FS only had one q and one other deduction.

I'm glad that Sherry gets to travel to Riga with another American girl (Angela Shao), and who knows, maybe she will meet some international friends.

I guess "East of Eden" is a skating classic (warhorse) but I personally have not noticed it used much in recent years, so I welcome this music for Sherry. I gather from the commentary that her program is inspired by one Michelle Kwon did to the same music? I will have to look that up.

Unfortunately Sherry lost her combo, not her usual mistake, but stuff happens. *Sigh* At this event, the judges seemed more generous with GOEs with just about everyone, and Sherry received a really big GOE for her really nice 2A. Thanks in part to this, she still managed to get 52, but the quality she showed on her other elements did allow the judges to reward her this way. Even with the fall, she got 27 for PCS which I really do believe she deserves as I've been thinking that her PCS could go a little higher than what she has been getting (though particularly in the FS).

I really liked the choreographic details, like her hand and arm movements in the Ina Bauer, spiral, and change foot combination spin. In fact, I thought this last spin has gotten even better, and with the addition of "armography", the spin is looking quite Mao Shimada like. This spin is rapidly becoming my favorite (a favorite with Mao and Isabeau as well). I'm not much of a spin fan (particularly the I-spin position), but when the I-spin is super straight and fast I start singing a different tune. As always, I admired Sherry's apparently innate ability to meld with the music and joyful, expressive, movement even when jumps aren't going well. I look forward to seeing this program again somewhere with better audio pick up (but at least there is audio for JGP videos 🙏).

Sherry lost her second JGP assignment. I'm very sad and disappointed. If she was injured, then it is a logical decision. But I hope she is not injured. Have you heard anything?

Given how things were done last year, that seems possible. But another skater who had the worst performance so far was given a second assignment that had been left open. There is more that I could say about the logic of the assignments but it would probably be more appropriate for the U.S. Women's thread.

Thank you! I just saw the video. I'm grateful to On Ice Perspectives for making this beautiful video of Sherry doing "East of Eden". Without competition requirements to do a combo, all her jumps look so nice. I really like this program for her. I also watched Michelle Kwon's and I can see the stylistic similarity they have.

Meanwhile, Sherry competed at the Ice Challenge, winning silver in the junior category. I have not found her SP, but here is a video of her FS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhkFrq3lE2o

Her SP was 57.24, FS 108.42, and total 165.66. The winner was Estonian Maria Eliise Kaljuvere, and bronze went to Canadian Quinn Startek.

In the SP, she did a clean 3Lz+2. The jump content in this program has got her as high as 62 internationally, but the loop was under and the Lz had an !, though the GOE was still positive. Level 3 step, and all level 4 spins. Her layback and change combo spins were the judges favorite elements. I have to say that I am disappointed they gave her 26 for PCS for a clean (no falls) program when she can get 27 even with errors.

In the FS, she had just one fall but it came with a REP penalty. Since it looked cleaner, it would have been nice to see her get a few more points than the 110 she got on the JGP but instead it was lower. According to the details, she also had under on the 3S (I did notice that one) and the 3L she turned into a combo after the fall. Again, all level 4 spins and a +1 on the choreo sequence. PCS was 50, which is lower than she usually gets. Perhaps the judging was stingy here; I don't know the other skaters well enough to say. So I have mixed feelings about this, but I'm very happy Sherry got another opportunity to compete internationally, and medals are always nice. Also happy to get another video of her Turandot, which is music I really like, and a good fit for her in my opinion.

Can anyone tell me why Sherry did not go to Sectionals? Can she still do Nationals? I was worried that she might be injured, but around the same time she did Ice Challenge so I guess not.

She has a bye because finished 5th last year, so she didn't have to compete in any of the qualifiers.

Sherry will compete as a senior at U.S. Nationals this week. This is her second time in the senior event, and I'm looking forward to seeing her Turandot with step sequence.

Sherry did a near complete run through of her free skate in practice today. She only skipped one jump, her first combo, and the step sequence. All of her solo triples and the combos in the second half looked great. I really admired her extension and glide out of the jumps, and her spins. I assume that if Sherry places well enough at Nationals she will get more opportunities to compete internationally? She could do senior competitions next season.
