Skates and duct tape

In case you are all wondering...Mira still had her skates duct taped. In fact so did Tugba Karedemir and they looked just like Mira's!!! Someone else had theirs duct taped too but it was only a piece across the middle of the boot...not like Mira and Tugba's which were all the way around!!

Lots of skaters duct tape their skates - but only the smart ones know how to do it so that it isn't obvious! White duct tape - or black duct tape - can be layered around the upper back part of the boot, similar to strapping a sprained ankle - in order to provide more support for a skater.

I've done it lots of times - and no one at nationals ever knew because the skater wore over-the-boot tights, which hid the tape.

Sometimes, the timing is not right for breaking in new boots - so out comes the duct tape. However, NEVER should the white tape be grungy-looking and worn - but should always be new.

quite a few higher level skaters do this, esp the men. I think that it's the only way to keep the uppper part of the boot tight enough for the support needed for triples and quads.

A friend who went to SA said Mai Asada had her skates taped with SILVER duct tape, not the white kind. He said during the warmup, Mai bent over and adjusted her boot covers, and he was shocked to see the ugly tape job. She put the boot covers back in place over the taped skates, but you could SEE the duct tape through the boot covers once you knew it was there.

Yes she did have a piece of silver duct tape across her boot. It was very noticeable. In fact I didn't even see her wearing boot covers since we all commented on how it duct tape must be the new thing. Tugba and Mira has white duct tape all around thier boots!!

i think that most atheletes are creatures of habit and most of the time they use duct tape because they are comfortable with it.
in gymnastics ferrari still uses gauze as her grips eventhough one could say that she is pretty established as a gymnast (she did win a world championship) and would have enough funds to cover buying commercial hand grips, but she still opts not to use commercial hand grips.
still, i do know that figure skating is different and presentation is a big part of this sport. skaters have to remember this (mira!!!) and they should at least cover it up or make duct tape presentable.
