It wasn't the gravity I didn't believe (although, I think I just suspended my belief for the movie) it was the thought of how many blades to the head he must have gotten during practice.

Rather like the Pamchenko, the timing's just not possible. He would have to throw her, set up for his jump, jump while she's still in the air, land before she does and check himself enough he's in position to catch her. Forget blades to the head, he would have to throw her high enough to do a quintuple twist to give himself enough time for that. I never thought I'd say this but the Pamchenko is more believable.
I agree the spots are mostly to cover up the skating doubles, but my mother (apparently my whole family watched this--I'm rubbing off) mentioned she thought it was also to hide that they were using the same rink for everything. And my brother, whose knowledge of figure skating is equivalent to my knowledge of Aussie-rules football, had the sense to ask "Since when is Chicago in the northeast?"
I also think they made a serious programming error running "The Cutting Edge" right before this movie, because it only emphasized that Doug and Kate were NOT the same actors, or even believably older versions thereof.
Oh, and my brother also had another good point--even if Doug and Kate conceived Jackie the night of their Olympic free program, she'd still only be about thirteen in 2006. So either she's VERY mature for her age, or the first movie goofed and Doug and Kate were at Sarajevo (making Doug a member of the 1980 "Miracle" men's hockey team.)

The 'age' thing is incredibly stupid. They could have easily chosen the year 2010 (Vancouver) or 2014 at a fictional Olympic venue (this would have been a better choice). Jackie would have been 17-18 in 2010, and 21-22 in 2014. They could have easily shown that she missed the 2010 Olympics because she broke her ankle at the nationals, but she wanted to go for the gold in pairs in 2014. They shot themselves in the foot by using 2006 Torino for Jackie's gold medal performance. She would not have age-qualified for the senior level competitions.
They would have been better off making this as just another skating movie (instead of a sequel- that encouraged more comparisons and the movie looked even worse). The parents did not have to be Doug and Kate, but had the same professions and achievements as D&K.
