What do you do with old/broken down skates?

Even if the old boots are still serviceable when you first stop using them, they deteriorate further with storage: leather dries out and cracks; some foams dry out and crumble, other foams turn to goop. I remove the blades from the boots and chuck the boots. I keep the blades in the hope that someday someone will market an affordable home sharpener for figure skates ... and then I'll use the old blades for practice.

I kept my old pair for pond skating, but they aren't too broken down. They're good enough for going out on a pond and stroking around.

My daughter's old skates, she tends to outgrow before they're too broken down, so we sell them.
