So there I was today in the dental hygienist chair getting my teeth cleaned by a substitute for my regular lady. We got talking as much as one can of course and told her I had just come back from Greensboro.
Turns out she, Kalie Budvarson, skated novice pairs at Portland 05 and St. Louis 06. Broke her leg and couldn’t skate in Spokane ’07. Broke her heart. She became a dental hygienist and is married and has a baby on the way and is very happy. She still skates now and again when her partner is in town. Very nice young lady…

She still keeps in touch with the some of the folks she competed against and follows skating. Sorry I didn't know her at Sectionals this season as she could have told me oh so much more about he life of a skater...she still looks exactly as she did back in '06.
Sweet story  Good for her moving on with her life and having a baby!

What a nice story. Guess I'll have to chat up any substitute dental hygienists more...

The odds are pretty amazing, really. Sure, you could run into an ex figure skater if you really tried in many a town....how many little girls with big dreams tried and fell along the way? But a Pairs skater that made it all the way to novice? In the Pacific Northwest? I just got real lucky....real nice lady....glad things worked out for her....

What a lovely story!
Last year I went on a cruise to Cuba. We were chatting with two couples who were to be our friends and dinner companions throughout the week. I mentioned my passion for figure skating and one of the women said she lived close to the Cricket Club and used to see famous skaters in the area quite often and remembered a fire there back in the '60s. The other woman said she skated as a child and was there when Barbara Ann Scott came to her rink to meet the skaters. An eavesdropping woman at the next table mentioned that her daughter was involved in synchro and she had some Kurt Browning stories. It's everywhere!

I love "small world" stories. Although it has absolutely nothing to do with skating, I want to share mine:

I'm in a bar in Hong Kong (in the wee hours and slightly impaired) and hear my name called out. It's a fraternity brother that I went to college with in the southeastern United States 10 years previously. He was also slightly impaired. We both became quite impaired soon thereafter. Good times!

Oh, my goodness! Chris, you aren't going to believe this but I met this young lady in St. Louis in 2006 (not in the skating venue but sightseeing after the competition was complete). She and her partner were so excited about competing the next year in their hometown. The next year, I looked for their names on the list of Spokane competitors, but they weren't there. I always wondered why... and today I finally found out. That picture clinches it. Thanks for solving the mystery.

That's cool! In St Louis, they had to withdraw as her partner broke his thumb in the short and tried to suck it up but in the end had to admit he couldn't go on (and possibly hurt his partner)..well, she did later on break her leg but when life handed her lemmons she made lemmonaide and turned out great....

Ok, now that's just awesome! Two 'small world' stories intersecting!

I was going to share one of my many non-skating small world stories, but after reading your post, it would just be anti-climactic.

It really is everywhere. My assigned dental scraper, I found out , Ikuko is her name, is a fan....she tells me all sorts of interesting things about the Japanese culture and we discuss skating a bit...it does pay to mention skating...and she and Kalie are both dog people too!
