It would be the same if Laura was there. Look at the judging panel - it has an overwhelming majority of Euros.
So Alena is the only Euro girl there and will have an edge because of it.
Imagine if seven of the judges today were Japanese. Do you think Akiko and Miki would have gotten better scores?
4 judges from Europe
3 from Asia
2 from North America
So really? Alena got 3rd cos there is one more european judge than asian? Or is it cos Rochette messed up 3 jumps (3Lz, 2T, 3F) whereas Alena only stepped out of her Ltz.. If Rochette skated clean, like Alena would be anywhere near her..

As other posters have pointed out, there wasn't an overwhelming majority of European judges on the panel.
And besides, who else should have put in front of Alena? Joannie's SP was full of mistakes today, and Akiko and Ashley were (rightly, IMO) hit by some downgrades for iffy jumps. And if you actually look at the scores, Alena's PCS was lower than Joannie's, and less than a point above Akiko's.
Come on. Let me demonstrate proposal.
1. Put a referece point in arena. This will be degree 0
2. Put a laser/touch sensor in a player's blades. It will position the angle of take off with respect to the reference point. The revolution is only counted for jumping period. Jump period is determined by a touch sensior. An actuator can be used for the sensor. Any type of piezoelectric material converts pressure to the electrical signal. After land, the sensor detects the angle of landing
3. The count the rovolution can be easily calculated by difference btw take off and landing angle.
Seriously, If someone gives me a fund, I can come up with proposal. Cost is the only thing which holds back this concept. Believe me. The current technologies can easiliy support this type of device. It is just matter of demands and costs.
So I don't agree with the UR call on Yuna's 3t but if you just forget about that and realize that SHE STILL GOT A 65 AND DIDN'T DO ONE OF HER JUMPS. 65, Alissa had a perfect performance at her SC LP and got a 63, she was ecstatic. Joannie's SC performance that was amazing should have gotten a 65 if it weren't for the Canadian judges inflating her scores.Mirai's great short at COC got 62....65 is a GREAT score for someone who does and lands ALL of their jumps.... I think Miki Ando's score today was a little inflated, but we are in Toyko, so we should just accept it. Alena got inflated scores in Russia, Joannie got inflated scores in Canada, Rachael got a huge score at SA (though deserved)...it just happens. And in fairness to Miki, is it really ok to let someone who completely skipped a jump (and in the short no less-when there are only 3 jump passes) win? I'd say that would maybe be a little controversial....the judges were smart, Yuna is in 2nd, but only by a point. One point. A triple flip is worth like 5 right? And Yuna lost points for the UR. It's not the end of the world. Yu Na should win if she does a decent long.
If you say so, how about Miki's 3-2?
Accroding to your words, she should have got not 3-2 but 2-1.
You said it's Tokyo, so we should accept the inflation or generous judge that Miki might receive. Well...I worry that many people think that way. Ok, then let's accept inflactions or generous judging on Canadian skaters that may happen at the Olympics. It's a kind of serious issue. That's why it seems that figure skating is becoming the sport of only a few countries. Do we still need this sport at the Olympics--the festival of the worlds?
You know what? Japanese skater swill take over the podium no matter what they do in the performance.
I think it's most appropriate to stick to the current competition and what we see instead of speculating too far.
Let's not yet go into sinister motivations of judges/tech panelists, and also, do not use the fact that YuNa has had !/e or underrotation calls, before.
Also, I am not that bothered. I just want YuNa to feel glad and happy because she skated well. Miki skated better, but they are both in strong contention to place first, and now it's up to either of them to skate a clean, good LP to win--just like it was in the olden days.
Where is a link to the panel? I have learnred not to necessarily believe any fact posted here when a person is making a point.
Typically any panels I have ever looked at had a much higher % of Euros.
The Olympic panels for instance are not even close to being balanced.
Well said. It is not like Yuna is the only one who is hit with unfair calls. It happens to all skaters.

The reason why many panels have so many European judges is because there are a lot of European countries in the ISU--and let's face it, there's a lot more countries in Europe than in, say, North America anyways.
