He has been totally eclipsed in popularity by Johnny Weir; Evan doesn't know how to play the PR game, or has gotten bad advice, or maybe is just too shy to put himself out there! He is the Olympic gold medalist and somehow he has become obsolete.

I am a Johnny fan but feel kinda sorry for Evan.

Good grief, who on earth is in charge of Evan's PR? There are so many more elegant ways to handle a situation like this......

That's my thought. It's so awkward and a bit tacky. I always admired him as a competitor because he worked relentlessly and never gave up even when he was almost too sick to skate, but this kind of statement tarnishes his past perseverance. As Pangtongfan says, he should count himself the luckiest guy in the world and enjoy a professional performance career, and pursue his modeling career (one of the few male skaters tall enough for such a job--I remember that his photos looked very good). There might be business pursuits or other skating-related jobs in his future. But if he does want to compete again, he should look to the example of skaters such as Katarina Witt, Brian Boitano, and others who put everything aside to train and humbly accepted that they had to compete for spots in the same way everyone else did. This kind of mercenary approach doesn't make him look good at al. It also leads people to assume that he must be skating below par or he wouldn't back out like this.

I am not sure what the heck is going on with Evan. Do you want to compete or don't you, make up your mind
otherwise "Bye, Bye".

He is just sitting on an announced quad triple ability! Carroll said. Details of the dispute have not been released so no one knows why!

Is it too late for him to go on SOI? I thought if he decided not to compete, he could go to SOI instead.

Well, Scott Hamilton (owner and director and all that jazz of SOI) DID say [basically] that Evan should just suck it up and compete during Skate America... I hope - for the show's sake - that he didn't burn his bridges with Evan over the comment. He was trying to bend over backwards in his commentary about the whole debacle. SOI is looking at a lot of financial hardship as it is... so it could come down to money whether or not Evan is in the cast or not.

This really, really bums me out that it continues to be such an issue. I know some of his fans will be up and arms with the USFSA - and they are far from perfect themselves - but if it really is all about the money, Evan, don't be so honest about it lol it never looks good for YOU.

If I recall correctly though skaters like Boitano and Gordeeva & Grinkov did not do Stars on Ice in 1994 due to the Olympic season even though their seasons ends in February (none went to Worlds).

Boitano never skated with Stars On Ice anyway. There were only two shows he ever did in partner with SOI and that was Sergei Grinkov's Celebration of Life special (SOI donated a tour spot for it and the whole cast was in it plus a few others like Boitano and Petrenko, and a young Fedor Andreev) and Scott Hamilton's return to the ice after cancer (not an official SOI show, buit the key players were all in it. and they wore SOI costumes lol)

Also: in 1994 and most of 90 and 00s, really, the SOI season started in January, broke for the 2 weeks of the Olympics and then started right back up... this schedule stopped sometime after 2006.

Plushy wanted to come back, and even though he had differences with the Russian Fed, he made it work.

Wasn´t quite a lot of money involved with Plushy´s comeback, IIRC?

I´m getting the impression that USFSA does not want Lysacek back and wonder what is the reason? He always was a hard working man and a reliable competitor, especially in international big events.

Maybe since he dissed their own event after Nationals in 2010. Who says they dont want him back. They just might not care either way. If he wants to compete fine, but they arent going to shell over big dollars as if he were Michelle Kwan to entice him to do so. Evan isnt nearly as important as he seems to think he is.

The U.S men need to start the rebuilding process anyhow. Not rely on dinosaurs who have already peaked and will be nearly 30 by the next Olympics.

.

The Russian Federation said yest but Plushenko said no. He said he had to pay a lot out of pocket they said they provided way more than for him than anyone else. It's all been solved and their isn't any real conflict anymore.

I heard for Vancouver they paid everything but his hairdresser. But for Sochi she is also included in the contract.:)

Actually I really hope they did pay him more than the necessary expenses for a comeback!! Billions of rubles if possible so that he would become rich.

Nevertheless money alone cant bring an athlete back to 8 am training and competing. Ask Yuna.

But really I dont mind Evan sorting it out and coming back at the end, I always like comebacks and the fluffs about it.

A mullet specialist is hard to come by these days and Plush needs to make sure to return his/her service.

Maybe his power comes from his hair? So important to keep it in perfect enpowering shape.

Just got my brand new USFSA 2011-2012 195 page Media Guide. Hmmmmm....where's Evan? Not in the big color section that has full pages of each man with pictures, records, facts, etc....there's a very nice full page picture of MK on page 101.....flip flip flip...wait a minute...on page 193, in an ad for NBC Sports.... yes! There is a one half inch by one half inch pic of Evan! Seemed like my media guide was a bit late this year...wonder if they did some last minute editing?

Both Evan and Zhenya are just playing the game, same as Joubert, which has been played since Sonja Henie's time.

Seriously, read up on history.

If all goes well, you'll see them both in Sochi.

What hasn't yet been heard is the huge sigh of relief coming from about 7 or 8 men who HAVE been dedicated to having their sights set on making that podium, and ideally grabbing one of those few (2 for Worlds, 3? for Four Continents?) post Nationals International spots. Hopefully, Evan's absence will become a non-story by the time Nationals rolls around. To bring attention to it (listening? NBC?) is a disservice to the sport, to the other athletes, and to anyone who is supporting the future and possible growth of the sport in the US. Focus and feature on the present and future NBC!!! Don't give Scott Hamilton air time to bemoan Evan's absence. water under the bridge. MOVE ON! Only 2 years until Sochi. Build the foundation for the many talented men in the US starting NOW!

Interesting, Chris! Half inch by half inch, eh? That tells quite a story.

I am glad, though, to hear that there's such a large picture of Michelle. She deserves to retain a prominent spot in the annals of American skating.

If Evan is playing a game, then a big part of that game would be getting as many men on the world team as possible, wouldnt it? So THEY can get as many men on the world team that would determine how many US guys go to Sochi.
He is not doing that and could have shot himself in the foot, just as Rach maybe shot herself in the foot by not pulling at last worlds and letting Mirai have a chance at getting us three spots. If Rach comes in third at Nats, then she will have cut her own throat. If Evan L. comes back after two years off and skates at world class podium level, he would be one of the greatest skaters ever....

Well, what exactly do they pay skaters past or present to use their image. Excuse me if one covered this already as i did not read every post. MK is quite the business woman so she is getting how much for that big photo? Anyone know?

I know Evan was a tough competitor. He often came across looking forceful and really lacking in something on the ice. I question his love for the sport.

I'm mean skaters like Ryan Bradley, Johnny Weir, Matt Savoie, Ryan Jhanke?, Jeremy Abbott, Todd Eldridge and all brought their passion to sport. They were able to draw the audience in to what they doing on the Ice.

I never saw this from Evan.
