I'm a big fan of BBC programming. Especially Masterpiece Mystery for many years, with anything Agatha Christie related being my favorite. Currently Downton Abbey as well.
With no disrespect to Maggie Smith who is great I also wanted to give a loud shout out to Patricia Routledge who was wonderful as Hyacinth Bucket, pronounced "Bouquet" on the Keeping Up Appearances sitcom among many other film and TV appearances. Good clean fun from the early 1990's.

Has the great Derek Jacobi been mentioned yet?

At the moment, viewers of American television are doubly blessed to see him in two series on PBS:
Ian McKellen and he are absolutely wonderful together in Vicious.
And Jacobi is the best thing about Last Tango in Halifax.

:agree: Love the acting of "Hyacinth" and all the supporting characters.

If you like mysteries AND Patricia Routledge - Keeping Up Appearances is indeed classic! - have you seen Hetty Wainthropp Investigates?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127376/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_4

Her young assistant is played by Dominic Monaghan.

Patricia Routledge is terrific. I really enjoyed the Hetty Wainthrop series when it was shown here on PBS (heaven knows how many years ago... :slink:)

Keeping Up Appearances can still make me LOL. Especially love Hyacinth's long-suffering neighbor, Elizabeth -- oh, her poor shaking hands and the shattered teacups!

Yes I have seen Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, and enjoyed that also. It is on my bucket list of Mystery DVD's to purchase, as it is not shown much on TV here in NY.

I love him. He is simply magnificent in "I, Claudius", a masterpiece tv series from the mighty BBC.

:laugh::thumbsup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0dn2FeFaSU

Derek Jacobi was indeed brilliant in I, Claudius. That was the series that put him on the map in the US. Also loved him in the "Brother Cadfael" mysteries.

Thanks for the Elizabeth clip! And did you know that The Infernal Bucket Woman really can sing? I found this after watching the "teacups."

I did know - but then I saw a documentary about her made by the BBC. I'm not sure if it was this one, but a quick Youtube search landed me this:

Nigel Hawthorne was interviewed in the one I saw, so it very well might be. Anyway, the beginning of it looks good. :) With lots of clips. I wonder if any of us here has ever had occasion to use the phrase "Unhand me, varlet!"? ;)

The newest Miss Marple, Julia McKenzie, can also sing. She's a Sondheim specialist. Here is a song from Follies. This isn't comedic like Routledge's. Give it a listen!

 CBS News did a story about the pic this morning.

Also, after re-visiting the BBC David Copperfield from about 15 years ago (the one w/ Daniel Radcliffe as the young David), here's a new name for the list if he hasn't already been mentioned: Nicholas Lyndhurst. I didn't remember him from the first time around but he certainly made me take notice this time -- the oiliest, smarmiest, most unctuous Uriah Heep I could ever imagine! Would love to see him in other roles, hopefully some in which he gets to play a more pleasant character. ;)

Still can't handle the part about David's stepfather & the blacking factory & had to fast-forward. What a wuss... :disapp:

The Today show anchors also chatted about it.

Willie Geist's theory is that it is an intentional publicity stunt from Downton Abbey -- as opposed to an unintentional mistake.
(In any case, his tone was not critical of the possible stunt.)

Omg Lyndhurst was born for that role!!!! Usually I find all ginger men (and women) very attractive, but he in that role was one I wouldn't touch with a barge pole

Speaking of redheads, who's looking forward to Eddie Redmayne playing Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything? I am!

It seems like an amazing movie. The trailer itself is a thing of great beauty, isn't it?

That is one tough character to play, I'd imagine. If the script is good, this could be a tremendously effective biographical film.

In terms of the suitability of a name, isn't it funny that a redhead's surname is Redmayne, which could mean Red Mane? Is that his real, original surname?

I hadn't even thought of that! It's a very fitting surname for sure. Yes it's his real name - just saw his engagement announcement in the Times and the parents are Mr and Mrs Redmayne :)
