A Basic Introduction to the Free Dance...

People who don't watch ID or only watch ID occasionally (like, during the Olympics or, yes, Junior Worlds!) tend to sniff at ID or dismiss it as "boring" or "easy". When I've asked a number of these people why they feel this way, two answers crop again and again. ID doesn't have big jumps (well no it doesn't; what it does have is the purest form of skating of all the disciplines) and they don't "get" how it is scored. What is it they're supposed to be looking at? This is probably why even the most casual of viewers love twizzles. They're both very difficult to do, and it's easy to differentiate a good set of twizzles (speed, flow, distance covered are all good) from a bad one (Whoops! They fell. Whoops! They missed catching the blade! Whoops! They lost their balance! Not so good.).

So here we are at the Free Dance. This being figure skating "free" is a relative term. Why yes, even here there are REQUIREMENTS GALORE:

Dance Lifts: Either one combo lift or two short lifts (if you include a choreographic lift, you can now have up to three lifts in a Junior FD program, 4 in a Senior FD performance).
Dance Spins: Either one dance spin or combination dance spin
Twizzles: One combination set
Step Sequences: Two, with one in hold and one not touching performed on one foot. Can be either straight line or curved in some manner (such as a circular or serpentine pattern).
Choreographic Elements: Two different elements from the following choices: Choreographic Lift, Choreographic Spinning Movement, Choreographic Twizzling Movement. Choreographic Sliding Movement, Choreographic Character Step Sequence (it's the choreographic equivalent of a Chinese menu!).

Periodically, the ISU goes into a tizzy about Ice Dancing, worried that it is becoming too "athletic" and "not dancey enough." So they do things like limit the number and timing of lifts. Or, as they have recently done, they've made the choreographic elements more stringent. Two of these are relatively new. The first is the "Choreographic Character Step Sequence." I was under the apparently mistaken impression that the entire dance is a choreographic character sequence, with steps yes and spins and lifts. Bill Neal in another thread provided a helpful explanation: "[P]artners perform around the short axis in hold and/or non-touching: steps (some are done in-place), all sorts of different movements including sliding and turns, and mirroring choreography (each partner may cross the axis also)." The sliding movement is also a new choreographic feature this quad. They must be continuous, they may rotate, they can be in hold or not touching. Sliding Movement cannot finish as a stop on 2 knees or sitting/lying on the ice, otherwise it will be identified as a Fall/Illegal Element. I suspect they added this last requirement to prevent a rush of Torvill/Dean-esque dramatic death endings (ah! memories!).

A complete list of the FD requirements can be found here:
https://www.usfsa.org/content/2018-19 ID FD Chart.pdf Scroll down; you'll find it. The ISU apparently deleted their version of it from the web.

My particular favorite is the costume requirements. Men are now allowed to wear tights; the "lady" (oh COME ON ISU, it's 2019; they're women) MUST wear a skirt. Sexist much? But here's the real laff riot: "Must be modest, dignified, not give the effect of excessive nudity and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing however may reflect the character of the chosen music." Oh reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally? I guess "garish and theatrical" are like definitions of pornography--exceedingly flexible when you want to issue a penalty. Just saying...

Ice Dance is a definite exception to the rule that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." On the contrary, a little knowledge makes ID so much more enjoyable to watch.

And as Doris said, let the bloodbath, I mean games begin!

Anyway wishing all the best and medal for Nguyen/Kolesnik just because they're awesome and deserved it!

Because one of the great joys of being an ID fan is discovering lesser known teams who may not win any medals but who will impress you with their creativity and heart and passion. Some of my favorite programs fit that description.

Plus you can check out the Browns competition for the future. ;)

Armenia
Music: Armenian Rhapsody; Armenian Medley
Choreography by: Mikhail Kolegov
Costumes: VERY elaborate maroon embroidered tunic over a hot pink dress for her, black embroidered pants and top for him. All very High Empire style.

Program Layout:

Curve Lift - nicely done with really interesting positions and entry. Level 4, .54 goe
Twizzles - done, with connecting steps, in a circular pattern. Nice. Level 4 for her, 3 for him, .93 goe
Rotational Lift - with jump entry. Level 4, .40 goe
Tempo change
Serp St Seq - not great edges but good flow. Steps are too simple. Level 1, neg .39 goe
NT Step Seq - They seem capable of more complex choreography. Level 1 for her, 2 for him, no goe given
Tempo change
Dance Spin - Level 2, .23 goe
Tempo change and man the energy level went wayyyyyy up.
Chor Char St Seq - nice but no goe given
Chor Lift - with a very cool position. neg .22 goe

They need to up their step sequences, but there's some good stuff in there. Her bell sleeves may be an unnecessary impediment. It's important to look good, but not when it hampers your movement!

Score: 68.71 and a SB

I was confused how the Brit's music had anything to do with each other, but the fact that it's all the Piano guys music makes more sense.

Their coach had a slight grimace/half smile while they came off the ice, and then said "Clean, but careful." A case of damned with faint praise, I think.
