I have to be totally honest and admit that I am not an expert in Junior skating. So, I was even more reliant on the statistics than I usually am.

As you know, I am always inclined to put a Russian or Japanese skater at the very top of my predictions. And going into the Ladies, this kinda continued, as the person I wanted to put at the top is a Russian who is representing another country – Little Miss Sunshine herself, Ekaterina Kurakova.

HOWEVER, because I am probably going to crash and burn, I decided to play it safe and put the two skaters that have dominated the season at the top. But, which to put in each position? Valieva beat Liu the last time they met at the Junior GP Final. But, on the whole, Liu has been consistently scoring higher. (Although, if fskate.ru still existed, I might find that Valieva has been scoring higher in domestic competitions. But, it doesn’t! )

So, for once, I went for an American over a Russian.

To make up for not putting her on top like I wanted to, I put Katia into third. For the next 2 places, it was a choice between Daria Usacheva and Lee Hae-In. This will be the third time they have been in the same competition this season. In both of the regular Junior GP’s, Hae-In won and Dasha was 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]. But in the Final, Dasha was 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and Hae-In was 6[SUP]th[/SUP].

I went for Hae-In.

Choosing who to have as my alternate was actually very hard, because there were 5 girls that were in contention. Their absolute PB’s were very similar and were all scored this season. And their other scores this season were all very similar to each other’s as well. So, I decided to try something I did at an earlier competition – work out the average scores and use that to order them.

When it came to the Men, I did a bit of shuffling from the absolute PB order. For the simple reason that there were a few guys whose scores at their respective National Championships this year were so massively higher than anything else they had ever scored that it was beyond a joke.

But, I’m not complaining, because it meant that I was able to have a Japanese 1-2! And to have Mama Elektra’s baby boy Daniel Graßl on the podium! ;)

In effect, the only change I made to the absolute PB order was to move 2 skaters down the list so that the order was fairer on the other skaters. To be honest, based on their other scores, I could have moved these guys down further, outside the Top 10. But I didn’t, because I do not believe they will finish that far down. So, I put Torgashev in 9[SUP]th[/SUP], and Siao Him Fa in 10[SUP]th[/SUP].

For Pairs, there was never any doubt as to who my Top 5 were going to be. And there was never any doubt as to who I was putting on top. It was just a case of whether the Germans were going to infiltrate the Russians.

This was actually quite a tricky decision, because although Annika and Robert were 6[SUP]th[/SUP] behind FIVE Russian partnerships at the Junior GP Final, all their competitions since then have been at Senior level. And they have been impressing at them.

So, I did the average thing again. And I was disappointed to find that it kept them in the same order as the absolute PB’s. But, I went with it, because the gaps between the averages were bigger than I expected them to be.

Rounding up my Top 5 was the partnership that I was always going to put there, Finster / Nagy. But after this, I made changes. The next two partnerships had absolute PB’s from Nationals that were massively higher than anything else they had ever scored. So, I pushed them down to where their next highest score would put them. Unfortunately for them, that meant Smirnova / Siianytsia dropped to 14[SUP]th[/SUP] and Dzitsiuk / Pavlov dropped to 15[SUP]th[/SUP]!

Dance was a real dilemma. I knew who I was putting on the podium, but was really torn about what order to put them in. There is hardly anything between them on any of the stats!

As you know, I am somebody who likes to support smaller countries. So I decided to let that be the deciding factor, and put Kazakova / Reviya on top. Under normal circumstances, you would expect me to then put the Russian partnership ahead of the American partnership. However, Usakova / Nekrasov have not done many competitions this season, due to Max being injured. That said, they did win the 2 Senior B’s that they did since December. But, I’m still inclined to be cautious.

The upshot of all this is that I put Nguyễn / Kolesnik ahead. Not entirely surprising, given that I think Avonley is a wee star in the making, and I do seem to have a tendency to support skaters from Kharkov (I admit that it started because female skaters from Kharkov tend to be really hot. But my support has now spread to the guys as well!)

And it didn’t get any easier after that, because there were so many partnerships that I wanted to put in my Top 5. I am not exaggerating when I say that I could think of reasons to want all of the Top 15 on the last 2 season PB list in there! Being realistic, though, the way these scores were meant that it was a choice between the Top 11 partnerships. There was just too big a gap between the Browns in 11[SUP]th[/SUP] and d’Alessandro / Waddell in 12[SUP]th[/SUP]. So, it was just a matter of deciding the order (and who to have missing out on the spot on my list! )

In the end, I left it as it was… with one exception. I swapped the two Russian partnerships around, so that Davis / Smolkin were ahead of Shanaeva / Naryzhnyy. What can I say? I like Diana, and want to see her fight through all the extra pressure she has on her shoulders, brought on by being Eteri’s daughter.

Although they didn’t make my list (I would have loved to put them on the podium, but it is just too competitive a field), I would like to make a special mention to my kids Angelina Kurdriavtseva and Ilia Karankevich, who have the honour of being the first skaters to represent Cyprus at an ISU Major Championship!

Wow. When I started this, I really did not think I would write 2 full A4 pages of analysis! After all, I don’t know anything about Junior skating!
