I'm shocked, but honestly kind of pleased? F/D are very talented and this will definitely be a big boost in morale & standing for them.

It should be, for sure. They have two great programs this season, and unfortunately, I think in domestic comps they have been held back at bit, especially at Ice Dance finals. Their FD score is comparable to ice dance finals, I suppose. But their RD score here is much higher. They have been making changes to both programs to get the best results they can. How hard they work should pay off for them. U.S. fed unfortunately favorites some teams over others. (For e.g., Wolfkostin/ Tsarevski got a huge score at ice dance finals, well over 11 pts higher than what they received at two international comps this season. W/T's domestic score of 185+ is higher than the 183+ score the U.S. fed favorite Z/K received at Golden Spin ).
W/T's domestic score was around 111+ in FD, and 73+ in RD vs a more tepid 108+ in FD, and 70+ in RD for B&V. Thus, B&V were rated about 3 pts higher in RD internationally.

That Z/K's international FD score placed behind Bella/ Vanya's FD is fascinating. But seriously, B&V have a great FD in WSS! And Emilea Zingas is still new to ice dance, so she's still learning. U.S. fed pushed up Z/K very far, very fast domestically last season.

It will be a very interesting battle at U.S. Nats in ice dance. So many wonderful teams; so many subjective and favorite-based judgments will occur. I wish it all would be based on fair judgments of actual talent.

I notice on the detailed scores that both Z/K and F/D received 1 pt deductions in their free dances. I wonder what for? Z/K's 105+ in the FD is way off their usual, isn't it? I have to check their GP scores this season.

Oh, I see. Definitely explains the low score for Z/K. But what was F/D's deduction for? Oh, I see from protocols, the deduction was for an extended lift, which can happen, but shouldn't.

About the 180 for B&V. I was in error when I said W/T's total score at Ice Dance finals matched Z/K's total at Golden Spin. It was 185+, so 2 pts higher, but Zingas had a fall which explains their results in the FD. As I recall, W/T scored 111+ in the ice dance finals FD segment vs B&V's 108+. At Golden Spin, B&V match W/T's RD score of 73+ at U.S. ice dance finals.

I am not surprised about B&V rating higher internationally than Mc/Spir, who have had increasingly lower scores recently. I think B&V are definitely comparable to and in some respects better than both Pate/ Bye and Bratti/Somerville, too.

W/T should probably also be rated over P/B and B/S, especially as all these teams further develop. I think P/B and B/S are very good, but have some drawbacks in overall potential. I don't think Emily is the best-matched partner for Ian, who is amazingly talented. Had Ian stayed with Eliana Gropman, together they would be at the top at the same level of Green/ Parsons, IMO.

In terms of talent and potential, the Browns, W/T, and F/D all have exponential potential long term. I am not as enthusiastic honestly about long-term top podium potential internationally for P/B, B/S, and Mc/Spir. Of course, I could be wrong.

The thing about this is that domestic judges tend to do what they want, especially when the talent base is so comparable. There simply has to be other ways for the sport to assess and reward talent for individual and overall development. Hugely inflated domestic scores and rampant favoritism are unhelpful and unrealistic.
