I am utterly desolated that D/L have had to withdraw. My favourite FD of the year. It must be absolutely heartbreaking for them. They've made so many sacrifices just for the shot at this Olympics and they seemed to have such a good one going....I hope they will be back for Worlds at home and show everybody how world class they are.

So dispapointed for them. I just saw it on NBC's webpage and came over to see whether we'd all heard here. What a shame. I hope she heals quickly so they can compete well in Calgary.

We love you, Marie-France and Patrice!

The Mission

Great applause greets them.

***slow music...but hard to hear for the squeals of audience, at times***

"Strong stuff - transitions thru the lift."
Aud applauding in time now...geez...kinda early, I say (Frau - not the Brits)

"Out of synch on twizzles...not lot of speed."

***music changes - slower***

Huge applause on some trick or another in the middle of the slow music...and again... [Brit guys not talking]

***music builds, quickens***

huge BRAVOS!!!! [still no talk]

"That's a different look from last night!" "Terrific to see them fighting back." "Also had to fight the return of F-P/M...rained on their Olympic Parade a bit...now did a great job." "Absolutely first class!!!"

Gwendal talks to Wing-Lowe...looking forward to a nice long vacation after Worlds. Not sure about 2010.

Scores: Canada still #1 - Italy #2.

I'm sick of The Mission! And I think this is a poor selection of music for ice dance.

So sad about D&L. Thanks Frau for all this hard work you're doing for play by play. I really appreciate it. Look out Sandra Bezic, Frau's after your job.

I know what you mean, but have you seen the movie? I can't ever get entirely sick of it because I thought that movie was so great.

At US nationals, the music that was most tiresome was Phantom of the Opera, imnsho.

edited to add: I think it has a pretty good rhythm for dance. (did I just say: "It's got a good beat and you can dance to it!" ??)

"Kerrs assured of a top-ten place!" but....Chris corrects his words...the next two may upset...

Kholkova/Novitski - the #3 Russians
Flamenco Bolero (a pop version of Ravel Bolero)

"Oh yes - good job."
"Watch how these two really make their skates work."
"Not typical Bolero but non-stop action."

END
"Well that was super," Simon concedes. Huge applause from Russian-heavy audience. Kholkova looks a bit like Natalia Bestemianova...fiery redhead. A non-stop program...they pulled it off.

Boos from audience...Russians down to 3rd so far. GOOD NEWS FOR UK!!! Definite top-10 for Kerrs.

The Palavela is rockin'!!!! Fusar-Poli/Margaglio now on the ice for warm-up, along with three other couples. #1 Canadians missing, alas.

Russian crowd has a specialized, organized chant going...this time for Domnina/Shabalin. Very loud sold-out crowd.

Gwendal talked wo Faiella/Scale...with #1 free dance so far.

Now Gwendal with Brits - very pleased. Determined not to get the time-deduction on lift, as in Euros. They are so happy. Four more years til next Olys for them!

Gwendal explains that ice temp may have accounted for problems yest'day, along with nerves. Temp seems to be better today.

Domnina/Shabalin up now! the #2 Russians - huge applause
Waltz of the Spirits

"tempo a bit slow across the ice...makes it a bit easier...I feel they were held up a bit too much yest'day by judges but...let's see today."

END -
"They really are fine skaters. Gigantic finish. Improved."
Simon - "I was a bit disappointed - slow step sequences...but energy in all else."
"Innovative lifts."

Phantom of Opera

"FABULOUS lift!" Thundering applause here...

***into vocal music***
[I love how the Euro guys don't talk during most of routine...just sit mesmerized. Wish that NBC gang would learn from them....]

from Euro transcript: She rotates 180° and faces the ice, curled up on his lap. This is really smooth. J'adore. And to think that they reportedly crashed in training this morning - well, you wouldn't know it. These lifts n spins are exceptional, and the crowd rightfully stand to salute the Lithuanians. Pride properly restored.

***end***

"Considering what they've been thru...that was one performance there! Pride restored. No medal , I'm afraid."

ROAR OF CROWD as F-P/M take to the ice while D/V await scores. Lots of screaming for Italians...

Scores: into #1 by 10 whoppin' points. 49.80 + 45.39 = 95.19 and 183.21 overall. The ante has been upped!

Prince of Egypt...need the performance of their lives. The look (her face)! Determination!

quiet so far...some applause...no talk from Brits

Now a big howl of applause, before slow music.

"Strength of the edges...Maurizio doesn't have it..."

BRAVO! BRAVO! at end.

Simon - "Incredible after last night. It was 50-50 he'd even turn up!!!!" Chris: "If they had 6.0s I'd give it to him for showing up!!!"
"Barbara expects nothing but the top & this won't be it...but crowd loves it. In places frightening to watch because his weak skating skills exposed." "Let's see how they are marked on skating skills." "I wouldn't broadcast that around this rink - I'd deny it to stay alive!!!"

Have G/P not done as well as they have? Where have they been weak? It looks like they will finish 14th here.

They were 11th at last year's worlds. I was hoping for a top 10 finish here.

"A little off synch so far..."

"FABULOUS lift!!!" audience applauding along

"not quite there..." iffy moment son spins...they're not too happy here, says Chris

ending music - big wooohooos

"So expressive" says Chris. "I wouldn't touch that music, though. Even though 22 yrs ago. A big mistake on their part, I think."
