Just goes to show winning is not the only goal of competing. Many, from youngsters to a KVDP or Suguri, know their own chances and potential and still compete.
Yeah, it's hard for me to understand. Actually I am curious what Patrick will do after Sochi, winning a medal or not. Will he be happy with a life without limelight? Somehow I think not. He seems to enjoy it. So he might compete as long as he can, just like Kwan.

I doubt Patrick will continue after Sochi. He has plans for life after competitive skating. Anyways, he's alreday accomplished so much in skating, 4 National titles, 3 Guiness records, a Worlds title, and a pair of panties.

I agree with SF. Patrick has a larger picture in his mind beyond figure skating. He'll move on after Sochi.

By the way, who gave the panties to him? To me, that's an insult.

Someone, please remind me, how old was Hongbo Zhao when he won the 2010 Olympic Gold with Xue Shen? Now this is rhetoric question of course, but just make sure you checked out Zhao's age before calling Sandhu a zombie. ;)

It is a different story for government sponsored skaters. As China's #1 pair, S/Z had all of the best source that the federation can offer: training time, best overall planning, physical condition training, therapy, neutrition... In general, the government has poured in a lot of money into Olympic sports, especially those that they have a chance to get gold.

This is very interesting news. I always enjoyed Sandu's skating it was very exciting and different. If he makes a comeback I think he will do very well under COP. I watched the videos and he is looking very fit. Wishing him the best of luck.

But Shen and Zhao came back after retirement, having been away from training, government sponsored or not.

OTOH, Chinese skaters don't keep their prizes, which go back to the federation. The Zhangs are taking time off this year because they competed in too many events last year, being the only Pairs to carry China with S/Z retired and Z/Z injured. They surely didn't do it for the prize money and it hurt their winning chances because they didn't get to train enough. However, the Chinese skaters are very grateful for the support they receive after seeing how foreign skaters have to find their own ways financially.

That is so bad a trend!!! Adore an idol this way?!

Adoring an idol this way is not a new trend at all. Outside figure skating, especially to the young, it's cooler than sequins, flowers, and teddy bears!

eta. I think the big lion he was given last season was really cool too. Evidently he thought so too and was seen carrying it at the airport. A really nice memento for that very special Nationals. Wonder what's in store for him at the GPF and the Nationals this season.

Cooler?! I'm glad that Patrick didn't pick them up. Or he'll lose some of my respect to him.

I can totally see some other showier non-dorky skaters picking them up and having fun with them if they recieve panties on ice!

Yeah, sure. Having a president been asked the size of his underwear and he even answered it, anything could happen.:p

On the subject of skaters who have an X number of falls advantage over someone else, and since this is actually a Michelle Kwan thread :)...Scott Hamilton, commentating at the 1998 Olympics, gave Michelle a two fall advantage over Tara.

Hamilton is the ultimate jinxer... if he makes a prediction you better make the exact opposite.

The Zhangs are skating the Grand Prix this season. They were second at Skate America. They were off last season due to his injury. Pang & Tong are taking this year off, except for Nationals and Worlds.

One good thing from this news is Plushenko will be not the oldest guy
Sandhu's biggest problem was speed not only jumps. He probably will be challenging team competition too.

I wish him good luck.

Who is next? Sure will be Weir!!!

We don't know about Sochi yet.

Sandhu could be a Team specialist if there is an artistic program competition but alas. Japan's Hanyu can easily be the SP guy with his jumps but no stamina. ditto Brezina and Gachinski. I see no one beating Chan in the LP.

Who is next? Sure will be Weir!!!

Weir has said he would come back if the scoring system were changed to his liking. Maybe his fans should start a petition or lobbying.

But Shen and Zhao came back after retirement, having been away from training, government sponsored or not.

They had always kept the come back door open before 2010. As long as I understood from the media info, they kept training, and of course got support from the system. They didn't retire officially.

OTOH, Chinese skaters don't keep their prizes, which go back to the federation. The Zhangs are taking time off this year because they competed in too many events last year, being the only Pairs to carry China with S/Z retired and Z/Z injured. They keep part of the prizes from competitions, as well as most of commercial income during the time they are in the system.

Of course the skaters are grateful to such support from the system if they are the ones who make to the top. It's a different story for those who can't. And comparing Sandhu's 30s to Zhao's 30s doesn't have much base.

You can't compare one person's 30's to another's 30's but it has nothing to do it with the official system. Poineering Chinese skaters went through poverty and personal hardships in their long journey to competition success. Yao Bin had to fight for government money to establish his Pairs program, leaving teenaged P/T behind on their own without a coach for 5 years while he trained S/Z. Even today, Chinese fans often question if it is a matter of money that promising Chinese skaters don't get to go overseas for top choreography. OTOH many in the West often question the psychological impact of young athletes being away from their families.

In the West, federations pay different degrees of attention and support to different skaters too. The less talented, or what you call those who don't get to the top, are left to their own devices also.

There are pros and cons in all systems at various times. I'd rather credit individuals for their success and personal health, which can be achieved or abandoned in any system.
