In keeping with the "list of favorites" motif.... Tho this doesn'e necessarily have to be a top 10, tho if any of y'all want to do it like that, go right ahead.
Which singers do you think have incredible, one of a kind voices that you just love to hear?
(This isn't necessarily the same thing as "favorite singer". What we're looking for here is "Wow, what a voice" as opposed to "I really really like so-and-so", tho in some cases those twains could well meet. For example, I really really like Annie Lennox, but as good as her voice is, I don't react to her with "Wow, what a voice".)
My list:
MEN:
Dean Martin -- I'm not really into that style of music, but every time I hear one of his songs, I always think, what a fantastic voice he had. I really must get a Dean Martin CD one of these days.
Chris Isaak -- As a songwriter, he needs some serious Prozac, but as a vocalist -- Wow.
Corey Hart -- He's pretty much been dismissed since his heydey in the 80s as just another 80s pretty boy, but IMO he is much more than that. Terrific voice, with admittedly some pretty schlocky songs under his belt. [And every time I'm in Canada I pick up a couple of more of his CDs!]
Andy Bell -- lead singer for Erasure. His voice sends chills down my spine. I don't know how many of you have heard the song "Blue Savannah", but I don't mind admitting that every time I hear it, even though I'm still not sure what it's exactly about, I am usually bawling my head off long about halfway through it because the vocals are so beautiful. And downright heartbreaking.
Clay Aiken -- I'm not wild about most of the stuff he sings, but I do have to say that his voice, too, sends chills down my spine. I had tears in my eyes when he did 'Solitaire' last year on AI.
Dwight Yoakam -- his songs are hit and miss with me, but the voice is always in top form.
WOMEN:
Emmylou Harris -- If Ms. Harris was in town and was going to sing selections from the Yellow Pages, I would be there. If she was doing a jingle for Sani-Flush, I would tape the commercial. And she is one of the rare singers that sounds EXACTLY the same live as she does on the CD.
Joan Armatrading -- limited range, yes, but IMO there is no richer voice out there.
Chaka Khan -- a true original. Her range does not extend into the Shriek Zone and her songs are all the better because of this. And no-one can drag out a vowel the way she can and make it all part of her charm.
Connie Francis -- Probably one of the most unusual, original voices ever to come along. If she came along today, she probably wouldn't even get a contract.
Lorrie Morgan -- one of the most underrated singers in country music. A rich voice, very precise tone.
Aretha Franklin -- which are the only 2 words one needs to say.
