I am really impressed that Oda is strong here again. Sure not finished yet. But it would take a perfect LP for kozu to beat him.

Nobu missed the last year so he absolutely needed a strong comeback. Yet, it is a lot more difficult than usual for a number of reasons. He only had NHK and this one; so only two chances whereas others like Mao afforded to mess up in the first event out of four (three GPs and Nationals). Skating after a year of time lag would be very scary. You may have forgotten the mindset for comps. You may feel scared of being watched by hundreds of ppl in the arena. Judges may not like you as much as they did before. He also had to skate under greater pressures because of the incident last season. I am really impressed.

I read elsewhere that Morozov tried hard to have Nobu open up, as he was so hurt and closed. I heard that Morozov is said to be an emotional coach (i.e., emotionally engaging with skaters). He seems to be a great coach for Nobu right now. Possibly a Miki Ando of 2006-7 season here again?

3L looks rotated enough...
At the interview, Mao said “My goal is to skate without mistakes. I just think about it and I want to keep a strong will.”

Whoever mentioned Christmas day sporting events - I don't know about other places, but in the US they're actually quite common: there are football bowl games around the time of the holidays - even on Christmas Eve (the Hawaii Bowl: this year's winner was Notre Dame, a Catholic university ;)) and NBA basketball. NFL games are on weekends, and if those fall on the holidays, they play a full schedule. Of course, professional athletes are well-compensated for any inconvenience...

It’s same in Japan. During the New Year holidays, there are series of big spot events.

Final of Emperor’s Cup (football), January 1st
Semi-final of National championships (rugby football), January 2nd
Rice Ball (American football), January 3rd

Pretty exciting to see Dice Murakami in the mix. He skated in the US for many years, and one always wonders how skaters who 'switch nations' so to speak with will 'treated' by the judges

I just watched Nobu on YOUTUBE. Great speed in his skating overall. He had a clean program. His 3A had a great speed and flow. I dont know if this is just me, but his lutz often looks flutz to me. But this one looked a bit better. his steps and spins had great speed. Congrats. 86.45 is a huge score. But I know its nationals.

No fall from 1-9
Guess Japanese are experts of good ice!

Looks like the result you posted was from last year's??

because most of the skaters haven't skated yet.

Too bad that fumie fell. How come she had time deduction. I wonder if she could make the world team.

Hmmm, I regret that Mai seems to be getting worse. She might have been at her best one year before turning to a model.

Yep, Mai is just getting worse every year. Not sure why. Mao and Mai seems to have the similar body type. All I know is Mai is working with Takeshi Honda now and she is enjoying skating again.
