Looks like both Angela Maxwell & Diane Szmiett make the JGPF!

(As of course, do Yukiko Fujisawa and Kanaka Murakami)

Congratulations to Ksenia Makarova on finishing 4th in such a strong field.

And to the top four skaters for not falling!

Delighted for Murakami - I love her style!

Congratulations also to the top three ladies for making the final and skating fabulously while doing so

That was a good contest!!

Now, from what I saw at MidAtlantics, Makarova skated surprisingly well and I assume she did quite well here in a more tougher comp. I hope the Russian Fed know that they have a budding top ten skater and do someting about her for the future.

Well, so far she has been assigned to two JGP events, so I think they are on the right track.

BTW, these are the three highest scores (aside from Fujisawa's score in CZE, which was higher than Maxwell's) in the JGP so far.

Great!!!! I totally love Kanako Murakami

In Madrid with that score, she would have won too. I hope someone is recording it, I want to see her programs ;)

Angela Maxwell's FS:

I couldn't see why Kanako's 2Lo was downgraded. http://www.isufs.org/results/jgpgbr2008/jgpgbr08_JuniorLadies_FS_Scores.pdf

I would've gone with Kanako 1st, Angela 2nd, and Yukiko 3rd in the FS and thus also in the overall.

Angela left several points on the table by doubling her salchow, one of her flips, and her lutz, and leaving out a 2Lo. It's doubtful she'll get the 3Lz ready in time for the final.

Both Kanako and Angela receive superior GoEs and PCSs. Angela has an advantage with her triple-triple in both the SP and FS, but her lack of a 3Lz is a big disadvantage in the SP. All in all, Angela has a slight advantage that could disappear if either Kanako or Yukiko get a 2A+3T. (A triple-triple in the SP is too risky to add on with only 8 weeks til the final.)

Fujisawa had the advantage in the technical score by quite some way - she had a 52.83 base value to Maxwell's 43.04 and Murakami's 47.78. Yukiko had lower PCS scores, but her advantage in TES was huge, particularly in her spins (and deservedly so) and the fact that she had 6 fairly clean triples. She's not unbeatable, but she's been very consistent in the JGP so far. Her lowest score is higher than almost everyone's highest. Her interpretation is not great, and she's been deducted accordingly. But in the TES she's had no rival so far.

Can I say how much I liked Murakami? Lovely basics, airy jumps and beautiful presentation

And of course, Angela's programs are the best this JGP season so far.
ETA: Fujisawa was practicing the 2A+3T in the CZE event, so who knows, she might add it soon.

I think a lot of Fujisawa's TES advantage will disappear when Maxwell is in top form. Maxwell had some problem over the summer and I don't believe she's in top form yet. She did a 2F and 1F in the Ostrava FS and here she did 2F and 3F+2T.

I've looked closer at the judges detailed scoring of Maxwell, Murakami, and Fujisawa's at both of their JGP assignments ...

... and I think that Maxwell has a lot more room for quick improvement than the others. With a maxed out CoP friendly program, she could've scored around 161.5 points. With a triple flutz in the SP, make that 164.5 points. I got around 159 points for Murakami and 157 points for Fujisawa. OTOH, Murakami has come out on top in direct competition against the other two and Fujisawa has been the most consistent.

True, Angela doesn't have a 3Lz. However, the 3F and the 3Lz(e) aren't very different. Kanako does a 3Lz(e) in her SP and for the Sheffield FS she replaced her lutz with another 2A. Angela does a 2Lz(e) in her SP and a 2Lz in her FS. Those differences account for the 6 points separating Kanako in 1st place and Angela in 3rd, yet I wouldn't say that Kanako has a 3Lz either.

Kanako Murakami SP:
I like it even more than the LP - so adorable!

Very nice. A typical program of talented 13-14 years old girls (like Nagasu´s SP last year) that is not comparable with programs of senior ladies. Imagine You Na-Kim, Karolina Kostner, Yukari Nakano or Kiira Korpi would skate such a SP! In two years Kanako Murakami will be no more capable to repeat it.
