At that moment in time, Rodnina and Zaitsev were SOOOO much better than the other contenders that they basically were saying, "I dare you to give this title to another pair."

The judges did not dare.

Personally, I prefer the Protopopov's vision of pair skating to the "Power Pair" revolution that R/Z delivered, but no doubt about it. They were THE superior pair at the time.
Rodnina had no grace and still doesn’t. You can’t have just a little grace. You either have it. Or you don’t.

Without even watching...

one of my earliest memories of skating was the podium ceremony where the crowd chanted and whistled until the fourth place finisher, Janet Lynn, was called out to the edge of the ice. I had no idea that was out in the internet somewhere.

and the practice video is cool. I am happy that the French announcing is clear and precise and I can understand it :)
