by Paul Triukas
On Monday the 29th of November, it was announced that the 2021 Winter Universiade - scheduled from December 11 to 21 in Lucerne, Switzerland - will not take place. According to the media release, the multi-sport event for student and youth athletes is cancelled due to "highly dynamic developments in the pandemic and related incoming travel restrictions."
The decision comes as reports of the emerging Omicron variant of COVID-19 are causing countries to exercise caution as they fight the spread of the disease.
Figure skating at the competition was scheduled to be held from December 17 to 20. The sport has been a part of the Universiade since 1960 and medals are awarded in the women's, men's, pairs', ice dance, and synchronized skating disciplines.
In the most recent edition of the event - 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia - Mai Mihara won the women's discipline, Matteo Rizzo celebrated the gold medal in the men's discipline, Alisa Efimova and Alexander Korovin won the pairs' discipline, Betina Popova and Sergey Mozgov won in ice dance, and Finnish team Unique won the synchronized skating event.
Multiple Olympic gold medalists and World champions have taken part in the Universiade throughout the years.
