I don't know if even at her best Mirai could ever win a World title at this point in her career. Gracie is the one most likely to win since she can do the toughest jumps and would also get high PCS if she skated clean. Ashley with her current jump layout would need a lot of the top girls to bomb to have even a chance to win.

I think Polina with another season of experience will be a contender in Boston in 2016. Her TES is competitive with Gracie's if not better.

Why isn't Polina a contender now? Her technique is fantastic and she looks like she loves being on the ice. What about her/her skating is keeping her pcs low? If someone could break it down and describe what I should be looking for please do so. I'd very much appreciate the gesture.

But Polina can too? If I'm not mistaken, she has a 3Lz+3T and a 3Lo+1Lo+3S planned in her free skate (and I think she might have done those this past Worlds).

I am going to be all over her next competition. I think her growth is outstanding and she always looks improved from one competition to the next one after. This next Cup of China looks to be reasonably competitive with old blood and new and she will be competing against Ashley. This is going to a "statement" competition and perhaps a changing of the guard or for that matter a continuation of the status-quot. It isn't going to be easy for Polina because this isn't Nationals and Ashley looks to be fierce in her determination to hold her spot. But IF Polina continues her growth it is only a matter of time

But Ashley's next GP event is TEB....right?

I've got a dilemma myself because I have grown quite fond of Polina and her new programs but still am a little bit of a Yulia fan. I'm honestly a bit nervous for Yulia but hopefully both girls can deliver the goods and the judges are fair ;)

S-S, why do you think Yulia has lost heart? I really hope you're wrong. You know Polina is one of my favorites but I've always been impressed by Yulia's competitive spirit and would hate to see her lose that. And...Polina and Yulia both need to look out for Satoko Miyahara, IMO. May the best skater win!

D'oh! You're right. :o:

I actually edited that out just because I didn't want to overdo Yulia talk in the US Ladies thread. But since you asked......

I don't think she has lost her edge yet but I just fear she may be worn out. She started her Olympic Quad about a year ahead of everyone else as a 10yr old when her and her mom committed everything to the Olympics(they sold everything for the dream and she has carried that with her ever since). Long story short I'm probably just worried for her because unlike many others.....FS is her whole life .... rarely anything else. So enough on that.....

Polina on the other hand is so fresh and looking to build. She has a really good shot at becoming the US number one and in my opinion the most likely to medal at Worlds of an American. YMMV on that :) I just think the fierce Yulia we have come to know may have been overworked and I think Polina is fully charged and looking to grab whatever comes her way. Like I said.....I'm hoping for the best for both.

Was I the only one really impressed with Courtney and thought she had the best case for being underscored at SC? :slink:

Polina does face off against Satoko in Japan at NHK right?

Oh Sam-Skwantch. I am so worried for Yulia based on what you say. Although she is not my favorite, I do think she's wonderful and adorable and seems like such a sweet girl. I had no idea about the back story- selling everything to pay for her dream, etc. Can you link to a story about Yulia that would provide this background?

I too want both Yulia and Polina to do well at Cup of China- to go 1:2 in whatever order. They are both bright lights.

and yes, I agree with you re Courtney Hicks! I disliked her quite strongly last season, but she has made vast improvements! Today on the NBC broadcast, Terry Gannon said that she'd worked with Tanith Belbin and Charlie White in the off-season to improve her skating skills and her presentation. While Tara said she didn't see much improvement, I did! And her jumps have such gorgeous loftiness!

For anyone intersted (the story of Yulia Lipnitskaya) with eng subtitles. Fellow GS posters Papa and QuikiM launched the whole project from her fan thread right here. Over 50,000 views. Turn on the CC for the subtitles....can't miss them

I feel like the guy who went into North Korea and left a bible in public and was captured

Re: Courtney
She seemed noticeable faster than most pthers at SC and very steady from what I saw in her FS. Hated her "dress" but that's a very minor detail.

What events will we see Karen Chen in again. I know she will compete at Nationals as a senior  but what else is planed?

You are HILARIOUS!!! I love it!

But I don't see a link to the Yulia story! Can you repost? THANK YOU! Got it now!

Don't know re Karen Chen- will try to find out. I really like her too. Angela Wang also has promise but is a headcase- sadly.

I hope Courtney Hicks places high at nationals, she has potential. Her scoring ability is very high.
I think since Radionova and Anna delivered at their first events, if they keep going clean or almost clean just like Yulia did last year their presentation scores will keep increasing.

If Polina starts strong her PCS scores will also go up... And that is a problem for Gracie. The judges have not given up on her yet, but if she doesn't deliver they will.

But Gracie showed last year that she starts slow and builds at the end...

I was quite pleasantly surprised by Courtney Hicks - after what I'd heard here on GS I expected her to be... well... rather awful (that she'd be "all jumps" and absolutely nothing else); but I quite liked her and her performances at Skate Canada.

Courtney had nice speed (although I thought she looked rushed at times) and great spins in addition to her springy jumps. I don't like her arm positions though, she could work on that.

Her costumes could use some work and be more flattering. She is short and stocky (not a criticism, it's her body type) and needs costumes that help elongate her body.

Courtney is not only stocky but she is also short-waisted, and that makes it pretty hard to design any costume that will elongate her body. White is not her color, that's for sure. She should stick to costumes without extra frills and fabric, especially around the waist, keep glitter at the bust level or above, and no fluffy skirts!

Please, watch what this girl went through in her life to be who she is at 16 and consider Ashley Wagner's words. I wonder if you'll be willing to call Yulia Lipnitskaya a "sonogram". :rolleye:

Subtitles didn't work for me, but I hadn't realized Yulia was a US Lady---that's what this thread is about.....

Oh, for heaven's sake. When directly asked about skating against much younger competition, Ashley made a quick joke about it and then went on to talk about how talented the teenage skaters are.
