2014 Cup of China Ladies Free Skate 11/08

Congrats for liza Yay  what happened to Yulia  that was one of the worst performances she's ever done.

Happy for kanako but those mistakes were costly.
Zijun Was amazing, give her some time and she'll rock the world.

Dear Yulia... what was that?
I really hope she can deliver in France, but that LP just don't seem to work for her.
Congrats Liza!!!

Zijun Was amazing, give her some time and she'll rock the world.

People have been predicting that Zijun will rock the world and it hasn't happened yet. She might be a late bloomer but judges remember bad performances and she has very bad performnces. Example Cup of China last year where she looked like she did not want to be there. I wish her well but she needs to step up

Well, Yulia is only human. All skaters have had a bad performance. Lets not predict her downfall.

I see some familiar names from yesterday. We'll see when everyone wakes up later (3 AM US time), but the tune is 180 from yesterday as of now.

I was one of those who thought that Julia look unbeatable yesterday. I'm still not a fan of her, but I've been following her fan thread for a while and know that she had issues with preparation for the LP in particular. I think it has the potential to be killer and frankly, I'm still unsure about the causes of her disaster today. Was it only the result of underpreparation or were there other factors coming into play like pressure, growth spurt, failing techniques, etc? I'm not giving up on her and I think it's so cruel to write off any skater after just one bad skate. Liza has proven that a skater' mental toughness is not to be underestimated.

I understand the judges and ISU a little, figure skating is not popular and now, without Mao, Yuna and Carolina, Yulia is the only star in the ladies category, she can get fans, advertising and sell tickets. Yes, it is unfair but I think Mao, Yuna and Carolina obtained those favors sometimes.

While I might agree with the gist of your comment regarding the current state of figure skating those "favors", especially where YuNa and Mao are concerned were earned.

Exactly they only got those "favors" after years of skating and earning those places. Not the same. Yulia although fabulous does not have Carolina's out this world skating skills, Yuna's textbook tecqnique and Mao's ice pressence and musicality. It took them years to develop and they were not getting those PCS at the beginning of their careers 😟

OMG, Liza won? So happy for her! :hb:

Yulia... While I'm happy for Liza, I didn't want it to happen with a horrific performance for Yulia. I'm still curious about her program though. Will catch up on the videos later.

Just woke up here in California and so happy that Polina was able to pull herself out of the hole she dug yesterday. Goes to show if she'd had a better SP she would really have been a contender. Haven't seen the programs yet but it sounds like, again, Yulia bowed down to the pressure.

I don't want to get involved in controversies but what "favors" did Mao get in scoring at Sochi or the Worlds LP 2014 or Worlds 2010, 4CC's 2012, or Worlds 2007. Quite the contrary. There was the NHK in 2012, but in the biggest events- Worlds and the Olympics- not at all. There weren't any "favors" for the Grand Prix Final SP 2013 either.

I am with you that is why I put favors in quotation marks.... No controversy thoug just saying

I agree with you👍

Christina Gao doesn't look ready for this event at all. She looks like someone relying completely on muscle memory to keep those jumps together rather than training, her technique used to be quite good and now it's just gone. Poor Christina. :frown:

Christina I felt was undermarked in 2012. She was a lovely skater. She has been in decent since. Too much school? Mark Mitchell? She's a smart woman; she must of known her condition going in. The honorable thing for her to do would be to withdraw from her next GP event and allow US Figure Skating to save the money for the future. A sad end.

Liza was great today, and her program looks better live than on video. It's intriguing all the way through and all those mileage on it totally shows. Yulia just doesn't have all the jumps now. It takes time to gain back fitness, but in the arena, Yulia was not faster than Liza, yesterday and today. I think they should be on about the same PCS boat if both clean. Liza looked like she didn't cover as much ice in the SP, but the LP was fine.

I thought Kanako and Zijun were undermarked and Edmunds overmarked. Edmunds is rather raw and slow live. I don't mind the choreography being a bit childish, but she is rather slow.

I thought Liza looked really good on video, so she must have been wonderful live. It would be great to hear from someone who was actually there to answer these questions, if you want to. Do you think Kanako and Zijun were undermarked in tech, PCS or both? How were their speed and edges compared to Liza and Yulia? What do you think of Yulia getting silver?

Great to hear from someone who saw this live. Thanks!
