2014 Cup of China Ladies Free Skate 11/08

I think we should all wish for Julia just that she is okay and neither physically injured nor having some kind of nervous breakdown. I agree that on its face this is bad sportsmanship but the fact is that none of us are on her team or in her head, and I think we should all give her the benefit of the doubt and wish her well.

While I am a Julia fan, I can honestly say I would say the exact same thing no matter who this had happened to. I think this thread has the potential to turn very nasty (in fact, shockingly! it already is), and I think that is unfortunate.

J. Lipnitskaia missed awards ceremony b/c she went back to hotel and did not know that awards came at the end.

What a crappy excuse. You would never see that kind of disrespect from Caro/Suzuki/Mao/Yuna/Miki/Michelle, etc. Someone needs to teach this girl about sportsmanship.

I see some defense of that she's a teenager who was under a lot of pressure to win. Please. She is not huge first teenager devastated by a loss. Imagine if Kwan refused to attend the medal ceremony with Lipinski in Nagano?

Or Yuna in Sochi.

.

As I said, if the case was that she was undergoing medical treatment, she should of course be excused. But that has not been communicated. What someone on her team has communicated is that she was unaware of the awards. I agree with Tarasova who said that the coach is also at fault here.

I don't think it was very surprising that they left the arena/press, I mean the girl was close to tears in the K&C, her mother's instincts might've taken over and took her daughter to their hotel to get any tears out of the way in private.

There were several hours between her skate and the awards.

I can only imagine how many threads would have started had this been Plushenko. Or Gracie. Or Adelina!

But no, somehow, Yulia is supposed to get a pass on this appalling bit of sportsmanship (or lack thereof). Huh?

I'm also not one of those people who thinks fans are owed an explanation/communication in most instances. I'm human and so I'd often like one (and in many cases it's actually to the skater's advantage to give one), but I don't think I'm owed one. Again, this is something I would and have said in most situations about any skater, not just ones I like. Julia has no obligation to say anything about why she missed the ceremony, except perhaps to the event organizers or ISU.

I don't see anyone here saying she should get a pass, except the mention of if she was/is injured and is receiving medical attention.

Anymore? She looked quite capable the night before. She fell flat and got spooked. I wouldn't rush to count someone out after one bad program. She isn't the first to do it and she won't be the last.

If I'm not mistaken, I think she was talking about during this LP performance only. And I agree that after the fall, she seemed lost/out of touch with the music. Compare that to Mao's Sochi SP, while she failed at her jumps, her choreography was still intact. But Yulia is a fighter, she'll be back.

I think you know I'd defend them all too :)

FWIW: if it was an anxiety attack as I suspect. It could last several hours and the most common symptoms are usually vomiting and nausea. :yucky: Although I do hope she has a new dress in a few weeks at TEB so maybe a stain could put a rush on that :)

Oh Yulia:bang:

She skipped the ceremony?!? Inexcusable. This is not a teenager at a local rink with her parents and three people watching. This is a seasoned international competitor. I don't follow the ladies, so I really don't care about Julia one way or the other, but no matter how upset, no matter how tired, only an injury should keep her from the awards ceremony.

yes, her fans and the public deserve an explanation, and no, that's not hating on Julia. What was it about COC this year, did all good sense leave everyone?

I don't think she owes an explanation to the fans either. But without one, I think she opens herself up to speculation and some fans perceiving it as poor sportsmanship and saying so. It's not like medalists regularly skip these things. There is nearly zero precedent for it. So of course, fans are going to form opinions. And it also seems an explanation was put out there (by Julia or her fed or the ISU I do not know) because a skating journalist reported it.

Mao only messed up her jumps, her choreo is still there, JuliaLip like another post mentioned seems dont know basic skating any more...

I think that's a bit of an overstatement--her jumps weren't there, similar to Mao, but her spins and spirals etc were--she had one trip-up in her footwork...

The tweet from Tatjana Flade in this case was tantamount to an announcement from the ISU, afaik.

Flade seems to wear different hats at different times: sometimes she is an independent journalist, incl. for GS -- but she is on the payroll of the ISU itself at other times, I'm pretty sure.

On the Russian federation website, many (perhaps all) of the official press releases related to Cup of China are given in the name of:

Татьяна ФЛАДЕ, координатор по работе с прессой ИСУ

I believe the translation is: "Tatjana Flade, ISU press coordinator."

But until the truth comes out this is all speculation. I agree that my Nausea/Vomiting reasoning is speculation too but what makes one right and the other dismissible. We should keep an open mind until we know the facts.

Out of pure curiosity....if she were to come out and apologize and say she was in a very bad state would any here be willing to listen if it were sincere?

Are you guys kidding me with this? Absolutely she needs to give an explanation. This a PR nightmare!

I hope her PR person is cooking up a story as we speak. They should say something like she was too ill and couldn't go. A good sob story always works.

I love Yulia and I was really sad she didn't skate well, but I think it was really rude of her to not attend the medal ceremony. I would understand if she had an injury or something, but 'forgetting'? Yeah I dont think any of us believed that excuse. Still though, I'm waiting on an official reason why, if there ever will be one.
