2014 Cup of China Ladies Free Skate 11/08

Wouldn't that be a more appropriate statement to be aimed at those having heart attacks over award ceremony attendance?

May I remind you that award ceremony attendance is COMPULSORY except in exceptional circumstances (such as having a sickening collision with another skater and having to be toted off to hospital)?

Being upset is NOT an exceptional circumstance.

My argument wasn't she was upset, my argument was that you have no idea if she had a valid reason that she didn't want publicised. No one knows for sure why so we shouldn't comment so harshly.

You really need to get out more...............

As we know, after LP Julia was at the hotel, probably crying after her "the worst performance in life" (c) I absolutely understand why she could've forgot about VC in her grief

However I wonder why people around her - coach, mother, federation officials had forgot about VC as well? As I understood there was a special shuttle bus from the hotel to the arena for all skaters. Apparently, the bus was waiting down there to bring skaters who went to the hotel back to arena for VC. Julia is a minor, she isn't supposed to be moving around Shanghai alone. Where was her team at that time? Why they didn't go to her room or phoned her to get down, it's time for VC?

But yeah, only 16 year old girl should be blamed for everything :disapp:

This thread was unnecessary but the defensiveness is just as excessive. Maybe tuck away the soapboxes, folks.

Totally agree that this thread was unnecessary. For goodness sake, the same subject matter is currently the main theme in the Ladies FS thread!

In fact, I find it kinda funny that not only is the same heated debate is going on in both threads; it is the same people that are arguing in both the threads!

This discussion should have just been kept in the Ladies FS thread, where it would eventually have become buried. But, I get the impression that this thread was created specifically to highlight the issue, and blow the whole thing out of proportion.

zamboni step (here) and myself (here) have already tried to look at things in context, and try to calm the situation down in the Ladies FS thread. But, it doesn't seem to be working.

Myself and zamboni step are Irish. karne is Australian. Maybe these differences in opinion are down to cultural differences. I don't know.

But what I do know is that we should not be getting so worked up about this. There are more important things to get worked up about (i.e. the need for proper protocol and rapid medical assistance in the event of collisions)

Personally, I think this thread should be closed. It is becoming "toxic" (to use a word that I don't like, but which seems to be used a lot on this forum)

This is my first and last post in this thread.

EDIT: Camillo - Please read my comment in the Ladies FS thread, as what you have just brought up is the finale of my post trying to calm things down there.

+1

Lakernik (the Vice-President of the figure skating Federation of Russia) known about this from the press the next day.
How can it be?

Don't know.
Actually, Kogan (director general of RusFed) was there at CoC :scowl:

Oops, sorry  I avoided GS last couple of days (and still avoiding Ladies and Men threads).

Agree, this thread was unnecessary.

She skated bad. It happens. If she's going to chuck a temper tantrum every time she has a bad skate then maybe she should quit. It was the height of disrespect and rudeness to not show up. Plushenko showed up even when he genuinely believed he was robbed in Vancouver. Max showed up at Nationals, even when he'd just had his heart torn out of his chest (and if we want to talk about people with poor self-image, there's one right there). I have never seen anyone not turn up because they couldn't handle losing. And yes, I will criticise, because if I had EVER even THOUGHT about doing something that unsporting at that age, my parents would have kicked my behind.

I agree. Missing a medal ceremony for a bad skate.... Michelle Kwan went to the medal ceremony after 97 Nationals.......

Ok, I think we are done here ;) This discussion will only result in more conspiracy theories, gossip, and bashing. If any new facts come to light, feel free to discuss in the Ladies thread.

These skaters are young, but they are also experienced and considered role models for their teenage fans. Aren't we taught the basic manners in kindergarten? Why does this simple rudeness have been excused and glorified so much here? If you have a 16 year old, do you allow her to behave like this? If so, I don't think we need to continue this discussion coz we are apparently educated very differently.

I don't know why posters such as CaroLiza_fan have the right to censor other posters and close a thread. Her reason for doing so is that other people's opinions would be buried in this thread. If you think Julia did nothing wrong, why do you wanna cover it up? Hypocritical much?

Posters cannot and do not close threads. Mods do.

I do think that if 16 is too young to be held accountable to meet normal, contractual obligations of a sport, then it is too young to compete at the Senior level.

That said, we do not know why Julia and, more importantly her coach, chose not to attend the medal ceremony, and I don't think there is a lot to be gained by speculating about it. There could be several reasons that do not involve rudeness, but rather inability to attend.

I hope she is ok. I feel for Yulia because the pressure of been the biggest star on a sport is a lot. People have high expectations and it is difficult to deal with them. Who knows? I read somewhere her mother made a lot sacrifices to get Yulia where she is (as most figure skater's parents). So, maybe Yulia is very afraid of disappointing her family, coaches and Federation.

I might be reading too much into this..

People expect Yulia to deliver All the Time. She is only human.

PS. That does not excused not attending the medal ceremony, but I blame her people more than I do her😁😁

I hear what your saying. I do hope that her coach does make a statement though. I think people just find it difficult to believe that she didn't know when it was. I am all for being a little upset over a difficult performance, I am concerned about how much she lets it consume her. This where her coach should step in and guide her.

Assuming that Julia Lipnitskaya was lying and got Tatjana Flade to cover for her (which is frankly insulting to both of them)... the comparison to Plushenko in Vancouver, at the very least, is irrelevant. Plushenko was upset with the judging, not with himself. He was also a veteran competitor in his late twenties at the time. Julia Lipnitskaya is neither of those things.

Julia's comments and behavior, both when she's won and when she didn't, suggest to me that while she may not have issues with her physical health like some skaters, she could be dealing with psychological issues. I do not want to play armchair psychologist and attempt to diagnose someone I don't know, but I think it would be best to give her the benefit of the doubt. I realize that there can be a tendency to downplay psychological issues compared to physical ones - after all, Julia didn't get knocked out like Hanyu did - but sometimes it's not so easy to just get over it. To me Julia looks like she could use compassion and understanding at this point, and hopefully she will eventually learn to better deal with the emotional repercussions of performing poorly.

well.. yuna showed up in the medal ceremony in sochi even though it was a deeply emotional ending.. managed to smile and hugged adelina backstage and carolina.. there is no excuse for not attending a medal ceremony no matter what happened..

though i kinda' like this side of julia.. she's one of a kind..

This is a pretty vile statement to make when we really don't know the situation or reason for her not showing up to the ceremony. You say it's unsportsmanlike but I tend to agree with those who think she didn't show up because she felt she didn't deserve her medal. Which is completely different from Plushenko and Aaron.

Plushenko felt he was robbed (and he was certainly vocal about that... and even stepped on the Gold podium, even as a joke.... neither of which was particularly sportsmanlike), and Max got defeated fair and square but having to stomach the bronze but he still skated well. Julia just had the worst skate of her career and maybe she felt that it was dishonourable to accept a silver medal for it... But to vilify a teenage girl is just awful.

this.. as if plushenko is the epitome of good sportsmanship..
