Basically, if the winner of NHK is one of the four skaters above they willget a spot. The second place winner will have to be one of the bronze medalists and they will have to score more overall to kick Ashley out of the spot (Miyahara 182.00; Gold 184.37; Murakami; 194.35)

So a realistic scenario where Ashley could get kicked out would basically one bronze medalist or someone else winning NHK and one of the bronze medalists getting second and scoring higher than the scores above.)

Leonova and Daleman can play spoiler at NHK though they're to far down in the placements to make GPF.

Yulia is safe though, I think.

I did. But for good reason. There will have to be some major star alignment for her to retain her spot. She is in the 6th position and for her to stay there, NOBODY can beat her at 22 points (1st +5th). That would basically require all the bronze medalists to not win or get silver AND it would require that gold medalist if that is not the case to not be Polina (Gabrielle Dalemen would have the same points if she won, but would have to score a crazy good score, 188.22, to beat Rika on the tiebreaker)

So as I wrote in my document: Hongo's dream podium to keep her prospects alive would be Alena Leonova winning, Polina Edmunds/Zijun Li in 2nd/3rd.

That said, crazy things do happen, never say never, I suppose.
 
I thought this would be a much bigger Russian showdown than it turned out to be but, whatever...still happy with the results:

Elena: She's on fire this year! Yet another competition knocked out of the park. I thought she looked stronger here than she did at SA. Her jumps looked cleaner and she performed even better too. Julia and Ashley made it easy for her to walk away with this win. PCS were a little high but that tends to happen when you're the only skater in the top 3 to nail a 7-triple program. Another gold medal. Until some of these older more mature girls can step up and land their jumps and sell their programs, I'm perfectly fine with Elena winning everything.

Julia: Not her best but a definite improvement over that implosion at COC. She's still struggling to get that consistency back. IDK if it's growing pains, boot issues, burn out from last season...but she's not the same skater she was last year. Something is definitely missing. Much better dress this competition but the program still falls kinda flat for me. She still has time to get herself together. Stuff just isn't clicking for her as easily as it did last season.

Ashley: Very gutsy move going for the 3-3 late in the program. I like that Ashley isn't giving up and that she's still fighting...but she still has a long way to go. She wasn't that strong here but I do think bronze was the best she could do in this field and she managed to do it.

Can't wait to see what happens at NHK. Spots are still up for grabs...
 
Radionova - rather perfunctory but solid performance. Sad for Julia but maybe she can spend some quality time and pull it together. She really doesn't seem comfortable at all though the dress is a big improvement. Ashley, I won't comment about the hair color because that probably shouldn't be an issue but her dress while nice again they spend hundreds if not thousands on their outfits they should get a stylist or someone who an help them in respect to translation on the ice to the judges/audience - forget tv. The outfit says confidence for Wagner and the silver motif (necklace) was done right - you could actually see it - if it weren't bold or too detailed you wouldn't see it from a distance. However, the red is a warm red and thus gold would have been far more compimentary wheras an electric blue would look great with silver (though colbalt or electric blue is probably the most versatilecolors for skin types - pale, black,yellow, tanned, oliver whatever - and thus either gold, silver or bronze works well.).
 
Aww how thoughtful, they did for Julia! lol at Elena's swagger, she out swaggered Wagner!
 
I do love Ashley's confidence and how she tries to sell her performance. She has that it quality but there is something about her jump set ups - they seem to lack transitions often - or they are clearly pronounced "I am going to jump" and not in a good or pretty way. Stilllike her fight. And the other ladies do appear to be girls though Iguess she has over five years on them (closer to seven or eight i guess).
 
Oh, Ashley made it look like she was being really helpful towards the youngsters when they were getting off the podium by directing them where to go.

However, she was being really bitchy towards Julia earlier in the ceremony.

Julia thought they were to all get onto the top step for the photographers (like they do in motorsports). But when she was getting up, Ashley gave her a very stern look and dramatically pointed towards the 2nd place step.

Julia did looked scared of her.

I am really getting worried about Julia. She always gave me the impression of being a very quiet girl, very introverted. A bit like I have always tended to be in real life (except, I'm not a girl!) She is clearly not coping with all the attention she is getting, and she is not enjoying her skating any more.

Can't remember whether it was Nicky or Chris, but one of the British Eurosport commentators said that Julia has been suffering from depression. Somebody on here tried to dismiss it as rubbish, but from what I have seen recently, I would believe it.

If you look into Julia's eyes, there is nothing there. They are just blank. The spark that used to be there is gone.

Personally, I can envisage her quitting the sport very soon. Which would be a great shame for somebody with as much talent as her. But, with all the attention she is getting from being in the sport, getting out might be what she needs to get her general wellbeing back in order.

If somebody is depressed, being nasty towards them is the last thing they need. So, I hope that all those people who are being nasty towards her back off.

Yes, she does not like the attention. She is indeed not enjoying her GPs and skating at the moment, but I believe there are different reasons.
She is perfectionist, she feels she is not ready and that makes her angry. I would be too, if you had to go out, knowing that people expect you to win and have a clean skate and you just know you cannot skate perfectly right now... imagine how you would feel...

I think it's hard to stay motivated after such a long and challenging Olympic season. I think that's part of it as well.

Probably what shocks people is that she is a human being. I think for the last few years she seem to have nerves of steel, so people assumed she was kind of a robot (and some used that as an insult toward her skating), but I think from the Olympics on, you could see that she has her share of struggles.

It's a weird position to be in -- having to prove yourself, yet process whatever struggles you're dealing with. That's hard for even the most happy person on earth.

I agree that I hope she finds happiness and joy in whatever she does and even amids her struggle.

You are one of forum's ardent Yuna critics, so excuse me for point out your obvious biases through out the ages. In what planet is this program better than any of Yuna's past program or performances , example please.

I am not an "ardent Yuna critic." She is a superb jumper and was robbed at Sochi. Her Homage to Korea is one of my all-time favorites. But she often won with lesser jump content (5 or 6 triples and no loop) and I often found her presentation cold. Elena did 7 triples and performed the heck out of her program. We'll see if she approaches Yuna's greatness over her career. But I do not miss Yuna, especially her seemingly pained if perfect performances in recent years.
