I feel that Gold could place anywhere in the standings depending on how she and the others do. She is CAPABLE of competing with the Russians even if they skate well, but she just hasn't been able to deliver.

As for Wagner, I feel she's kinda out of her league here. She backed into the spot due to circumstances out of her control and she also had easier individual events. Still though, making GPF 3 years in a row is fairly impressive...this time, though, her SP score just isn't high enough to be competitive (she's low 60s and needs to be around 70 by this point). But we shall see what happens.

One thing's for sure, all 6 of these ladies are going to be training super hard for this, the Russians are fighting for "top dog" status and the Americans are going to be going all out to get in the podium mix. It's going to be great!!

You're probably right. Still, she is getting very high PCS so if she goes clean she should beat anyone who falls in the SP. Of course, the problem is that all 5 of these women aren't going to fall.

I was so impressed with Gracie's short program at NHK. Too bad they probably won't show it on American TV!

They did just now(!). Not quite my "style" but solid effort for her. We need more of that from her...

Yeah, I agree about Gold and the Russians. I don't know if the judges see it that way but personally I feel she can compete with them. I seem to be in the minority but I quite like the way her LP is put together. Unfortunately, she hasn't been as consistent as she needs to be to cement her status as top contender in the world and so I'm afraid that the judges might put her in a second category from the Russian girls. It helps that she now has a GP gold but still.

I don't think the Russian Fed is so much more influential than the USFSA that they can lobby for 4 skaters to place ahead of Gracie. If she is clean she should be second or third. I just question if she can skate two solid programs, because I don't think her NHK-winning level will be enough to place high at the GPF.

I feel that Gracie if she skates clean will be on the GPF podium no matter how good Russians will be, it was obvious at NHK that judges were in no hurry to give gold medal to Alena which would have meant that Russian ladies would have 5 out of 6 GP golds. But can she skate clean in both SP & LP? I agree with British Eurosport commentators, Gracie has that star quality, in fact, she reminds me of Katarina Witt - a combination of atheletism, power and striking beauty - unbeatable if only she could have a mental toughness of Katarina too!

My thoughts exactly!

Gracie is already given very high PCS, the judges do think that she has it, her problem is mental, when she is on, she has the speed, spins and jumps, if she can put out 2 clean programs she will be on that podium for sure. The only thing to worry about is her nerves because that always seems to be her undoing, maybe she'll have a better outing in Barcelona, at NHK she looked so sleepy to me, during her winning interview her eyes were so droopy, probably conked out at the hotel right when her head hit the pillow. In Barcelona the time difference won't be as drastic for the Americans.

I'm hoping for good things from Ashley since she's always been a fighter, if she places 6th with well skated programs I will be happy because that simply means that everyone else performed well too. Lots of people have been split about her Moulin Rouge program, I agree maybe the vocals are a bit too shrill for an arena but I like the choreography and how it goes with the music.

Just so it's on the record in this thread, Gold had to WD from the GPF due to a foot injury. Fortunately it does not seem to be a major injury so she should be back in time for US Nationals.

This makes Wagner the lone US entrant in that event...things just got a lot less interesting. Gold was the only one that I figured had a shot at preventing a Russian sweep...

I am a little worried about Gracie, from now on, she will need to learn how to deal with injuries properly both physically and mentally. She will only have one quad of good years left for a lady skater, perhaps even less...

With stress fractures, if I remember correctly, its common to be off the ice 4-6 weeks. That can only harm her training for Nationals. A very bad time for this to happen.

Yes, the timing is unfortunate. But better now than going to the GPF, doing so-so and THEN discovering the fracture. At least it shouldn't end her season, although it is a setback. I'd like to think she COULD have competed if she wanted to, but chose to play it safe instead. I think she'll be fine and ready to go by late January.

I must say, though - even in she is in the best possible physical condition, it's still going to be awfully tough for her at US Nationals. Not so much because there are other girls on her heels (she should be the class of the field) but because she is the defending champion and on top of that, she ALREADY has fragile nerves...I can only imagine how much pressure she'll be feeling at game time. If she loses significant training time, she will have to fall back on her experience and muscle memory to get through it.

I wished they packaged Gracie differently. She is an athletic skater, I don't find her a graceful-princess-y skater at all. I felt like if they marketed her better and worked with her strengths she would look better on ice.

^ Something very telling: In her GPF teleconference after her WD announcement, in response to a question asking her what she thought of a Euro commentator's "Grace Kelly" comment, she said that when she first went to Carroll, he told her that she had potential to be like Kelly.

That told me all I needed to know about her "packaging" (and BTW, I hate that word...)
