I will support you always, Liza. :cheer2: Good luck at Europeans! (And thank you Mr. Google for being comprehensible this time. :))

She looks like an actress..

She looks like an actress..

Yes, of old Hollywood glamour.

You are not the only members that think this:

Besides sharing her name, does anyone think that Liza resembles the late Elizabeth Taylor, when she was that age? Similar coloring, face shape and the caftan like costumes (LOL) bring to mind the famous actress and activist.

Good luck to her the rest of the season after a very strong start!

You know, I wasn't too sure about the comparison with Liz Taylor. Until I did a search for photos of Liz when she was a teenager, and saw this page:

http://www.businessinsider.com/eliz...t-photos-from-the-stars-childhood-2011-3?op=1

My goodness, the likeness is scarily uncanny! Especially the 1949 photo!

Those comments were on pages 18 and 19 of this thread.

Don't you love how the conversations in Fan Fest threads can go full circle?

I don't really know a lot about her but she seems to be fairly strong in only jumps. Her artistry/performance and spins were average to me. Although she is talented.

Hi! The "Fan Fest" section of the forum is for posters to discuss and celebrate their favourites. Of course, there are certainly other threads to discuss skaters who you're not personally a fan of. For instance, the "State of Russian Ladies 2014-15" thread in The Edge could be a good place to discuss Liza.

But just in case you're curious about Liza's story, or why many people do like her... (I admit I'm not the expert here; plenty of people followed her for far longer than I have)

As a young girl, Liza was hailed as a prodigy. In the 2010 Russian Nationals free skate, her technical marks surpassed even those of male competitors, with the exception of Evgeni Plushenko. She was the first woman to win both her Grand Prix events in her senior debut season (2011). Many people hailed her as Russia's hope for gold in Sochi.

Unfortunately, things turned south for her last season, due to a combination of injury, growth, and nerves. She failed to make GPF for the first time and, going into Nationals as the defending champion, only managed to place tenth. Some even said she should retire (at the ripe old age of 17) since she'd lost so much ground to her competitors.

However, this season she stormed back, competed non-stop, made GPF again... and proceeded to grab her biggest international win yet. She also began nailing SP after SP, which she hasn't done in... ever. She looks to be on the European and World team that many thought she'd never make again. I think her comeback was inspiring to many people, even those who are not her fans.

While I agree that her spins are average, I disagree about her performance ability. I like Liza not just because of her jumps, but because of her presence, her fluid arms, and her willingness to perform in a very different style. I keep returning to her long program at Skate America last year. It was in the midst of her worst season and her SP had left her too far behind. And she actually left some points on the table as far as the jumps were concerned. But I love how she timed her movements to the music, the energy generated during her step sequence, and the crescendo at the end of her program. Of course this is just my take, and Liza isn't going to appeal to everyone. But hopefully you can understand why her fans enjoy watching her. :)

This was amazing! And what was particularly wrong with her season, besides later injury, her SP? Lutz-toe combination in the beginning of it? I see know why they go with 3toe-3toe, not lutz in SP. But watching this performance I really don't see how it is any worse by the level than what she does know. It looks just as great.

I don't understand why people criticize Liza for her musicality? :confused2:
She jumps at the right note, spins at the right note, that counts.
It's true that her spins are not top notch among the field but her jumps make up for it.

I don't know how to post in the Cyrillic alphabet, so if anyone who can, could post how one would spell "Mi Tebya Lubim, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva" in Cyrillic, it would be appreciated. The idea would be for fans to make up a banner reading both the English and Russian versions of "We Love You, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva" to display when she finishes a performance. In advance, I say "Spacibo"!

Sadly, this fierce, wonderful Liza was nowhere to be seen at Nationals last year. Her performance there was indeed... not much of a performance.

Honestly, I think her problems (as she herself alluded to) were mostly mental. The SP has plagued her since forever (that incredible 2010 Nationals LP I mentioned? She was only tenth after the SP). And she doesn't just miss the lutz-toe: she's singled axels and fallen on spins too.

Her body did change a lot after puberty. That was definitely a factor, but it's really hard to say how, exactly. To me, it looks like the biggest change came between the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. But she still did decently in the latter: making GPF, winning Nationals, winning bronze at Europeans (and placing first in the FS ahead of Carolina and Adelina--that dratted SP again :bang:). But then Olympic year hit, and the pressure of making the team probably got to her. From the interviews, it sounded like she had to do some soul-searching, and concluded that she wanted to keep skating, and wanted something to justify "all the years of hard work."

That was such a lovely & well-written post, Sandpiper, I'm in awe :cheer2:

To add my two cents, Liza absolutely stunned me in her senior debut. This was her FS at her very first GP event, 2011 Skate Canada! Even though she still clearly needed a little more polish, she also very clearly had (and continues to demonstrate :)) talent and charisma. A bit off topic, but I remember post-2011 SC Frank Carroll being a bit dismissive about young girls lacking maturity & spinning like bats in hell to get their jumps, haha. I mean, I understand that he was probably trying to defend his own skaters in the media, but I just find it a bit funny because Liza's jumps -- when she's one, which thankfully she has been all season -- are so sure. And with such talent obviously there, I think a lot of people, including me, wanted to continue to have hope in her.

So even when her SPs the last couple of seasons kept making me yell, "YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, LIZA," The Room-style, I still kept wishing for some sort of turnaround. That it's happened so quickly with so much success is, as Sandpiper said, really inspiring. :)

Nitpicky (but well-intentioned) thoughts for John King:

(1) In case it matters to you:
The more formal/respectful/polite version of "you" would be вас, as opposed to the familiar form of тебя.
I don't know French, but the difference is analogous to vous vs. tu.

(2) I believe a more natural word order in Russian would be:
Мы вас любим or Мы тебя любим.

(3) Wonder whether it would be more natural to address her in Russian by her patronymic??
It is Елизавета Сергеевна. (Transliteration: Sergeyevna or Sergeevna.)

Is there any chance Liza will change her SP costume?

Oh, give it a rest already! ;) I agree that she could look even more stunning in different costume but it seems she likes what she wears. And if wearing that kind of costume makes her consistently great, I say keep that sack baby! :cheer: Loved her RN ex costume, btw. Red is clearly her colour!
On more serious note: are there any news on the state of her knee? I hope it's nothing serious, but I was bit worried when she was holding her knee in K/C after her SP. Get well rested Liza and stun us all at the Europeans!
